petrified wood that is. Today's find from my place.
The north side of my property is all hill. It's also a natural gravel pit. Millions of years ago this was a shore line/river bed. Most of the stones are worn smooth like they has been in running water.
Every now and then I walk it and find pieces of petrified wood. I have given a lot away to my nieces and nephews but keep a few for myself
Here are today's finds. Normally I find one piece today was a great day to hunt.

    I love stuff like that!

Grandfather would find various stuff around his land. Found plenty or arrowheads, petrified wood, etc.

    Great find @RLHOK !!

Way cool. When I was a kid we used to go on field trips to a place called the fossil pit. Really just a hole in the ground from a sand farm. But there were tons of fossils. Not dinosaurs, small marine things. Probably if you look hard enough you'll find a bunch of those, especially since there was water there at one time. I want to say troglodytes were prominent, but my wife the geologist (for real) says trilobites.

I used to hunt for trilobite fossils on a ranch I worked at when I was a teenager in the gulley washes after hard rains.

What's weird is there are very few large rocks on my property over 4". Mostly small. This was just laying on the ground under a Pinon tree. Weird.

The ones I find work their way up to the surface. I found one piece laying at the base of a tree on top of the ground that a few weeks before had not been there.
I have thought about doing a small dig to see what I can turn up.

I have found a old rusted horse shoe, a sword, yes a sword, handle was rotted off, blade was rusted up bad, never could ID it, but I doubt it had any value and so did the folks I sent picture to, but a sword non the less. Lots of glass for some odd reason and a small old intact coke bottle, fishing pole but no reel.
One tree had a old old deer stand, well some lumber nailed up into the forks of the tree, but looks like it had been there for years.

Crazy stuff here on this small lot.

I have thought about having a few cut and polished to see what they look like on the inside.

Petrified wood usually doesn't look much different on the inside. The polishing on them will make the biggest difference. If you wet it with water, you can get a better idea what they'll look like polished. Most of the ones above are a little plain. This one would probably be best.

The most colorful are the ones that are opalized or agatized thru and thru.

Plenty of color hopefully not too cracked up. I've got some round opalised "pieces" that weigh from 45 to 60 lbs, 8" to 10" I found years ago in Nevada on my dad's cousins ranch. There were whole sections of logs that were fenced off. Middle of nowhere. Still there.
