I’m sorry for your loss. I just found this post, two years after its origination, and enjoyed reading through the memories and banter.

It seems like he raised a good family, which is about the proudest thing I think any man can hope to achieve on this earth.

Your family will be in our prayers. My father passed in 2019 January (brain/stomach/lung cancer due to Agent Orange exposure) and man was it tough to deal with; but like you, I know he is in a far better place, and I know that I will see him again one day. :)

Sorry for your loss....I have the privilege to treat cancer patients daily. I wish we could find the cure and I would gladly go flip burgers for a living . I meet the most amazing patients. I feel they have a million more times the courage as me....as I am sure your dad did. Very humbling for sure. Sending prayers your way....19 years is amazing.....true fighter

I flew on a UN "White" Blackhawk in Macedonia. The pilots were trying to make my buddy and I sick by suddenly flipping it sideways and diving into a river canyon. It's one of my favorite Army memories, sitting in the back of this Blackhawk with the doors open, hauling ass, zipping along sideways along that river, and diving in and out of the canyons. I think the base radioed in and told them to knock it off. I wish they hadn't. I never felt like I wasn't safe.

OP - your father is very lucky to have you for a son.

@landphil UPDATE. I wrote the above as I was reading the thread and wasn't paying attention to the date. I'm so sorry for your loss but so happy for the time you had with him and the memories you two made.

"Base" always says, "Knock it off."

    It's only because they're jealous.

So sorry to hear about your dad Phil. It'll probably be one of the hardest things to deal with for quite some time. I lost my dad 5 years ago November and I miss him every day (maybe a couple of tears right now writing this). It's just hard but it's also okay to grieve. He sounds like he was a great guy and put up an extraordinary fight.

Also, don't be surprised if one of your fine looking boys isn't hooked by that helicopter flight. I took my boy on a flight/tour when he was 8 and that's all he talked about for years. He eventually turned that passion into a career.

    This, 100% this.

My Dad was literally my hero, in a sense; we went through a LOT together, and I'm not in the least ashamed to say I cried like a baby when he passed. I'm talking sitting on the couch, wife rocking me for a few minutes while I let it out (dammit, who's cutting onions in here....). My Dad taught me not only is it OK to cry, but it shows the intensity of one's love/devotion to someone, and I can tell you for a fact the ONLY reason I've been married for 18 years is because I took to heart the lessons my Dad taught me.

Sorry to hear about your pops but I'm glad you got to live it up with him. Memories are the best gifts to have with loved ones that we've lost.
I'm glad to have the ones that I do with my brother years later. Lost him to cancer, it friggin sucks.
Those egg-beaters are fun to fly, I get to play with one at work.
