Never once had this be an issue, I think it’s over stated, personally. Either it doesn’t come up, tread difference is so little you’ll be fine, or tread is all old enough just buy a set like a big boy, but what do I know :)

Well that's what I meant by that post. Unless you're putting it in a marina slip, then launching usually means later retrieving.

And the few times I've forgotten to put my trucks into 4wd when pulling a boat out makes me certain I'd never even try that in a 2wd truck

It probably works well for you in AZ. Hell, we only had rwd cars/trucks in Montana and ran chains/studded snow tires. I was the first person in my family to buy a 4wd truck in HS. Hunting was a whole different experience after that.

I also have a locker and with 2000 lbs of pin weight (on a slight hill) I could not get enough traction to start effectively moving. Brake, 4wd, start moving, 3' later disengage 4wd. It looks dry, but there is ice/slush under those tires.

I've had it back into gold king and on part of the sunflower loop. I loved passing people who were unloading quads, they looked at my stock ass truck and laughed and I just threw a  on my way by.

    Wet grass strikes again!

You guys really want me to get a 4x4 dump truck don't you?

*I'd get a 4x4 dump truck if I could....but the only ones I've seen are diesel and / or too short of a wheel base.

No. That option wasn't until after 2020.

I love my 4wd and glad I still have it.

it did great in the few inches of snow. Did get stuck in 2wd mode but turned on 4high and it made it out.

flew on by on highway to driving at 55 with 4hi in some situation

I had 2WD (So actually 1WD) vehicles for the first 45-50 years of my life and got by just fine, but there were certainly times when I didn't go someplace I would've liked to explore because I was worried about getting stuck.
There were also a few times I got stuck and had to be pulled out by someone with 4WD.

Now that I've had a couple of trucks with 4WD I can't imagine ever buying a 2WD truck again.

I don't do anything super crazy, but we camp in the desert a lot and like to go exploring. I also like to get a little further back in than most to have some distance between us and our neighbors when possible.

Most of the time I'd probably be fine with 2WD, but sometimes you hit a soft/silty patch out of nowhere and you're like "Oh, that could be a problem in 2WD!" The desert's funny like that.

Nobody needs 4x4, until they need 4x4. I’ve had lots of both 2x and 4x trucks and would never buy a 2x truck again(unless a smoking deal on a cool ride).
SDSurfer, I love your pics, a couple look like canyon sin nombre off s-2. Incredible spots out there. Explore the fish creeks off 78 also, not too much further. Have you crawled around the wind caves off s-2? Lots of great camping in the area.

I understand sometimes people just need a rig to haul things too big to fit into a car trunk but there is no circumstance i personally would ever own a truck that didn't have 4x4. The frustration of first stuck i ever had would put me into a mental institution.

I haven't been to Canyon Sin Nombre yet, it's on my list.

Love exploring out there, you could spend a LOT of time getting lost to find yourself and not even scratch the surface.

These wind caves? First one reminds me of a Mastedon or something.

Some fantastic sun downs there, wow!

I have seen my FWD (one wheel drive, whichever got less traction turned) Honda Accord with tire chains on, go up icy hills the newest, tallest, and most expensive 4x4 trucks could not move on and due to the fear their drivers' felt, not back off of.

Still, I'd rather have a 4X4 and not AWD. I've seen AWD get stuck on wet grass.

Needed to engage 4WD on my Canyon the other day on a steep driveway. Couldn't get a run at it due to traffic and rear wheels began to spin on the frozen sidewalk at the bottom. Backing back out to get a run would have been dangerous (due again to traffic).

We had a decent snow fall here. I had to take my wife to work in it. Slid one time put it in 4wd didn’t have an issue after. I am running stock geolander H/T tires too. I did not once feel unsafe or out of control. Now I wouldn’t go ripping through a field on the snow with them but, feel much more confident in them and my truck. So 4wd for the win!

I'll add my "never not having 4x4 again" story.

About 10 or so years ago, on a road trip through the North West, the wife and I got stuck on a mountain pass headed to Yellowstone. Probably 4-5inches of snow on top of 2 inches of ice.

The road went from cleared and plowed to light dusting to stuck in about 200 or so feet. We spent three hours in 17 degrees digging and digging as much as we could away from the wheels to try and make our way out. Well we made it worse and on my attempt to get out, slid down the side of the road to the ditch.

Knowing we were good and stuck now, we waited... After two more hours, a dude on a snowmobile happened to pass us by, grabbed his suburban and pulled us out.

He said we were lucky, "where you are right now, most people spend days out camping in the wilderness. I only came back because I had forgotten something in the car and was only a few miles away..."

I didn't have that Ford Explorer much longer after that.

Being Texas city kids, we learned our lesson that day. Now we plan for stuff like that and are very thankful that guy forgot something!

Just today I was thinking about a dumb move I did once, when 16.....not the life and death consequences you would have been dealing with, but a stupid move on my part all the same (winter and going on the wrong road just for fun).

Don't just be thankful, thank the Lord.
