I haven't autocrossed in years. Used to clean up the stock fwd Class with a 81 Lancia B coupe. Last run of my last autox a held second in all the haipins instead of going to first and bettered my best time by almost 2 seconds. My reward was a DNF. Said I missed a cone. Couldn't tell me which one but said I must have to lose 2 seconds. That really burnt me on autocross.
Last day of March 2017 I picked up a new Fiata 124 Abarth with Brembos and Recaros. No other convience or safety options. Now at 65 I don't think I still have the reactions or kahunas to drive it that hard. 20200820_170456.jpg

I kinda go into a focused rage when pushing that hard, kinda like letting go of caution and pushing harder than I normally would. I have a hard time believing I could do that in 30 years.

So… I was holding 5th in novice pretty strong until the VERY LAST RUN OF THE DAY! A Mclaren who was bashing cones, going off track all the sudden learned to drive and pushed me to 6th… still got the magnet for 6th though (last position to get an award).

Tomorrow I am pushing harder, I want to get the times I know I can

Day 2 went really well, I went topless on Sunday and was very determined to put down some great times. My first run of the day I was pushing hard on tires that were still warming up and I knew the car was going to spin but I was so close to the finish line I said F it and aimed it to go between the finish line cones and then have a righteous spin out. I destroyed cones after the finish line but I put down a clean time and went through the finish line sideways. I ended up shaving over 2 seconds off that time through the rest of my runs. My last run I was pushing for a 53 second run (currently I had a 54.089 as my best). I came across the line and my fist was pumping in the air when I saw the 53.589! But they tagged me for hitting a cone… so that time went in the dumpster… With my best time of 54.089 (without hitting cones) I actually started competing in my STOB class although I had the smallest tires, least horse power and no aero. I beat a turbo MRS with a huge wing and splitter, it felt good to make my little Miata start to complete with the big boys. Sunday was my last Auto X running as a Novice. Saturday there were 19 people in the Novice class and I came in 6th, Sunday there were 29 in Novice and I came in 5th. There was .4 of a second between 3rd and 7th. It was a tight group, but I was very happy to bring in 5th in the larger and much more competitive group.

I didn’t break anything, I need to look under my car after killing so many cones though. I do have a minor oil leak coming from some where around the valve cover or front cover, but that is a minor issue. My oil pressure gauge after my last run stopped working and now says 145 PSI all the time…

I have a track event December 1st and another Auto X December 5th (assuming I don’t break the car at the track event). That will end 2021 for me.

I know what I want to do to go faster in 2022, but I gotta budget, and hopefully find some sponsorship to make it happen.

Whether my wife likes it or not, after talking to many people who race these and vendors, I decided exactly what I am doing for 2022. I am going to 17x10 wheels with 255 tires, a lot more camber, some sort of rear downforce (either a wing or a large spoiler) and likely a larger rear sway bar.

By increasing camber and tire width (although only a bit wider) should make a pretty decent difference in grip. Also my biggest complaint of the rear ended not being planted through corners will be helped with a wing or large spoiler. The larger rear sway bar will likely be needed when the rear end gets more manageable to keep it lively.

I am not adding a front splitter for 2 reasons. First I don’t need more front down force, second, hitting something with it can have catastrophic consequences if it breaks free from hitting something.

There is still potential of adding more power down the line, but I have decided to not go to a different engine, it is just too much power/torque and it would completely change the chassis. If I could squeeze out another 30-50 hp/tq though it would be amazing.

Well, the car has the new wheels and tires on, I have rolled and pulled the front fenders some more, but I need to go back in and do alittle more clearancing and cut away some more fender liner. I also got a much more aggressive alignment today! I pushed the car through some turns today for the first time with the new tires (before the alignment, it was scrape city) and the grip was a very nice surprise!

I am buying a spoiler that is made for Auto X and ok for track use when the Black Friday deal goes live with them.

Alrighty… been a busy week! I went to a track day at MSR, it didn’t go well… I couldn’t get the tires to do what I wanted… I was also rubbing on the tires a lot… also the new fuel system threw the tune off and the new tune didn’t come in until I was hauling the car home… I left disappointed…

Fast forward to today, I went to the last Auto X of the year. I found out very quickly why I couldn’t get the tires to do what I wanted to Wednesday… my gauge was broken… I thought I was at about 28 PSI, I was actually about 24 PSI… borrowed a not broken gauge and fixed it. Holy crap, the tires started doing what I wanted! I thought I ripped off part of my front lip when I hit the curb on the track today but in reality during the compression, I ripped out all the fender liners either completely out or hanging on by a thread… I did a quick fix and ran the last few runs. Good news I never spun or lost grip! Bad news I need fender flares to make room for these bigger wheels and tires.

So, now that I have great grip again, now it is time to add more power!

Also, I don’t know if any of y’all know what the DF Goblin kit car is, but there are 2 that always are at the Auto X, (picture of my son getting ready for a ride along in one) they weigh about 1000 pounds less, both have about 100 more hp than me and have sticker tires, and I beat them both today!

Minor update, car has fender flare on it (just spray painted for now). I have cut up the front fenders, I need to finish the rear. The car is going under the knife in the next week or 2 for the bigger and better roll bar. No more convertible top.

This thing is f’in sick dude. It just keeps getting better! I had a 06 Miata sport and absolutely loved that little car. If I had an extra garage spot I would still own it.

Why do we as men always feel the need to sell our cool shit when we got married ? Lol I sold my 2015 sierra rcsb I had modded and lowered because of being married and I felt like I needed a more practical vehicle (2kids) . As it turned out zero need to have sold my sierra and we used my wife's car everytime we took the family out anyway lol

I am just taking the opportunity to get back into having a toy.

It is a work in progress, I am going to invest some time today cutting and welding on it.

I am hoping everything works out well and I can have a supercharger on it soon

Today I finished it all! New roll bar is in, convertible top is gone, fenders have been cut and stitch welded (I will finish it out later but this is good enough for now), I lifted the front end 3/16” to prevent rubbing on the fender flare. Got it a fresh alignment and it is ready to rock again.

I am very excited to get back to killing cones with this thing. I noticed the car was peppier driving it home with the new roll bar and no convertible top, car probably lost 50 pounds between the convertible top, the frame and all the plastic.

I also added a picture of why I haven’t tinted the back window

Took the car out to the first auto cross of 2022 and I came to play! The new spoiler made a huge difference and I pretty much stayed in second place in my class. There was an expert driving someone else’s car and I couldn’t catch him for first

I did alittle work on it and went racing!

So, I took the bumper off, relocated the oil cooler, cut the bumper support, test fit the heat exchanger and installed the splitter. And the replacement parts showed up for my spoiler! I washed and waxed the car for the first time in a long time, it was very dirty…. I loaded the car up and headed to kill some cones.

Being a nice day, u decided to take the top off and save a few pounds. I had trouble dialing the car in all day and it dawned on my why before my last run…. Taking the top off killed the aerodynamics for the rear spoiler… it was too late to throw it back on so I went all out for the last run anyway. I did ok, I got 6th in my class, but the good thing is that the cars/drivers I am competing against the most I closed the gap a lot more than I have before. I was within .4 seconds of 3rd place.

The car is about to be torn apart for a lot of changes that need to be done within 2 weeks. Custom titanium axle back exhaust (something I am going to try and sell to others), painting the fender flares and front lip, and the big one, the supercharger is going in!

I have a big event March 18th-20th. I am very excited to go and see how I stack up. I might come back with some new stickers on my car hopefully making stuff cheaper
