Now I have to wait until Monday, service manager not in today. Run down, glass all cleaned. The what looks like a chip is in the middle of glass. Look closely you will see a line run across. All the bubbles are behind that line.

Once the outer glass cracks, it allows air and other contaminates to infiltrate into the crack to the laminate layer.
Windshields are technically 2 pieces of glass sandwiched together with a plastic layer in-between.
Water and moisture will penetrate into the crack and cause further deterioration.
What you are seeing is the plastic layer+ bonding agent separating and oxidizing from one side of the glass.
It looks like a clean break on the top of the outer glass, but not a clean break all the way through the outer glass IMO
If the crack never occurred, the "bubbling" would not be seen.

I really think you're wasting your time going to the dealer when there is clearly an impact point and that area of the glass is well below where the defrost starts.

You should have zero deductible comprehensive.
If you don’t have this, call your agent and change it.
Shouldn’t be more than a couple bucks a month.

Photos don’t serve glass damage well.
There does appear to be an impact point that was pointed out earlier.

Try the dealer and if no luck, file a claim on your zero deductible comprehensive.

Must be nice to live somewhere that insurance will cover windshields. They won't do it here because the municipalities throw a bunch of gravel down on the streets every winter.

When we visit Calgary, Canmore etc, 4/5 cars have damaged windshields.

My brother told me no one gets them fixed as they will get a chip or crack the next time out to the mountains. I guess the insurance companies would be paying out too much

Interesting, as this is the exact reason that it's covered where I live (volcanic cinders). I'm sure that we pay for it in the long run...but it's standard here.

Found some new crack this morning. The main pictures I’ve been showing are on passenger side. This picture is on driver side and there’s a 2nd crack going on. This is behind the also everything is smooth on the out side of the window from meaning no chips and on the passenger side to driver. If you take you hand and rub over the whole area you everything feels smooth but if you take your nail and scratch up you don’t the crack, if you scratch down you feel the split to about just shy of middle which you barely feel. I known pictures are had to tell and looks different in real life. I’m not trying to be anal but just want proof this was an impact of something. Also when I first noticed this, there was a burning type smell for 2 days but I don’t smell it anymore. Maybe a stress crack? All this happened about the 21 of dec when the first show happened. I’m ok if Toyota or the dealer proves to me an impact but I’m telling you there are no marks out, just what I stated above about the feel.

Once a crack starts it’s very easy to crack more and elsewhere.
Especially in temperature swings and when applying any pressure.
I learned this the hard way when attempting to repair a small chip.
I put the hardening compound in and thought, it’s cool out, let me turn the defrost on to speed things up.
I reached up to examine the chipped area from the inside, reached up up to feel it with my index finger, applied a very slight amount of pressure and the window went from chip to 8” crack instantly.

Yeah I know cracks spread and can do whatever as it becomes more weaker. I don’t know what caused this because there’s no chips or cracks from stones. the whole window is smooth as you run your hand across. I can see if there was pit or stone marks but nothing. Just wondering if it’s a stress crack and curious about the smell that went on for a couple days. This is why I’m going to dealer and or have a Toyota rep show me proof an explanation. And yes my area temps are not normal, one day 20 the next 60. I’ll find out in time, and let everyone know. I appreciate the answers you guys gave.

How do you explain the hole and is it in fact a hole all the way through?

There’s no whole, everything you see that looks like a stone chip is behind the line running across. Everything is smoothly on the out side and can barely feel the cracked line. You can only barely feel it with your nail going one direction. Dealer has me scheduled for this Wednesday. I’ll report back and let all know.

We had a long crack along the wiper heater line the second time the heater (mirror & wipper) switch was turned on after some cold nights ... The car (not a Toyota) was practically brand new and you could NOT find a ding or even a scratch anywhere on the windshield. The crack was all internal and you could not feel it from inside or out.

Dealer said you must have had a ding but could not find one and even the insurance guy told me that it would be hard to get the dealer to replace it ... Insurance replaced it minus the $50 deductible and the guy at the shop told me he has seen many cracks caused by the internal glass heater. I asked him not to connect the heater wires and he said it's a good idea.
It may not be a very common failure but it creates a weak spot or if you already had a weak spot (possible impact or a ding), it will make it even weaker. We haven't missed the wiper heater thing so if you can live without it just don't plug it back. It takes me 5 minutes to reconnect just have to remove 2 small screws but I don't want to risk it.

Maybe Toyota dealer is nicer and will replace yours.

I had this happen to me as well in my old (well new at the time) Subaru Impreza. Just driving down the highway minding my own business with no cars around and then the drivers side window shatters and lands in my lap. Almost shit myself!

Well Toyota blames impact of some sort. I laughed and said what, explain from what. As I’m getting excuses from something falling on it to baby stone to someone smacking it, I’m standing there smiling, rolling my eyes, and thinking to myself what a piece shit, you proved nothing.

I said how, there no chips or pits outside, and not to mention as I rubbed my hand across the windshield I feel nothing but smooth glass. His words it’s the angle/degree it was hit.

So cutting story short I said whatever, get my keys and thanks for the bullshit you gave. I was hot because I got no real answer and explanation.

I’m driving thinking many I’m going to be out at least $600-$800 because of this. My comp is $200 and not knowing if I’m allowed to get Toyota OEM windshield, to recalibrate camera and thinking safelite will probably mess up and put plexiglass in lol.

Phone rings it’s wife, I said what’s up, insurance called and they will cover it. Cover the windshield she’s like yep, I said a factory, she said however the windshield stands now. I said fuck outa here, she said really. Got home call those rapping money people and asked myself. Talked to a agent the story was correct.

So my fellow Tundy buddies this Saturday I have a really good installer slapping a brand new Toyota OEM windshield in at the dealership, then getting my camera recalibrate. For yep $$$0 See it’s really is the little thing in life that truly make you happy. And I’m fucking stoked.

If wondering a 2020 Toyota OEM windshield without heat wiper park is $840 plus to recalibrate is $300 plus what other expensive. At least where I live.

I truly appreciate you guys chipping in, but if this happens again and is exactly or close to same outcome Toyota will eat that truck.

"Chipping in" So you didn't win against Toyota as everyone here said. Came down to insurance covering it for you. Glad you got your windshield fixed for free but man, all of your name calling and blaming of Toyota is quite exhausting.

How do you expect Toyota to eat the truck if happens again?
