Hated doing pace count. was easier to just point and hall butt until you ran into a major land feature, then orient yourself to the map and plot from there. But most of my land nav courses cover 35-50 klicks with 8-15 klicks between points.

Agreed. It takes so much concentration on counting steps that you forget to look up and notice landmarks..... My training didn't require more than a few miles between waypoints. I would be curious what field you are in that requires such long distances in land nav.

The only time I stressed pace count was at night. Or for the people that could not terrain associate.
I would always set up a couple of hand rails and a back stop and book it, like you said.

I forgot about the thumb method. That's pretty much a favorite as well.

Boy Scouts, "girl" scouts now, used to teach thumb method as part of orienteering along with a simple compass and map....

It works great as long as you know where you are and where you are going. The key being TERRAIN ASSOCIATION.

True. That is a big difference. Makes sense to pace at night if you have to move and still observe the stars, moon.. A no brainer to not observe your surroundings during the day. The Marine corps always stressed to not stare at the ground...you will never be found...

So true. If I look up, I get distracted from counting. BTW, I get the feeling Im conversing with a couple guys on a subject they know way more about than I do. Like to know where you guys learned land nav. Maybe PMs?

Like mentioned above, you used to be able to get basics with the Boy Scouts. Right now, I think that NOLS may be the only non military option for serious land nav training. @Eclipsed & Floating ?

When I was stationed at Ft.Bragg I was part of and orienteering club also. They used to have one around here. I'm not sure if they are still active.
When I was part of that club we would have poker runs. Find your points (the cards) and beat feet back in. Fastest time and best hand won.

It’s amazing how the lives we live shape the things we do. I trained both my boys in basics, then sent them both to NOLS. My youngest was a forward spotter , head of the class in all aspects, now as a combat veteran he is working for the BLM in cartography.

I did the same with my boys, except they didn't go to NOLS. I just showed them because I feel that it's a skill that they may one day need. Besides we got to play in the woods.
