I’m looking for a good dog

I never worried about cold with a Vizsla, have friends in Bend with one, and I used to live in the cold. They let you know. You can always get the cold weather package. Wirehaired Vizsla.

They are so good with children, yet so capable as a proper dog. My wife is wired in to the community well, and can recommend local rescues and breeders if interested. Strongly suggest picking whatever breed dog you decide on from a litter as a family, it is worth it. Good luck with your search!

 

I've hunted pheasants, huns and quail behind Vizslas in cold (15°) weather as well and they can handle it with a neoprene vest. I've just never worked with one in the water on late-season waterfowl so I didn't want to recommend one for icey water retrieves without prior experience.

Out of all of the gun dogs I've been around the most insistent on human attention and affection was a vizsla. She was the biggest sweetheart I've ever seen, a great bird finder and great with kids.

 

I second the Cane Corso. I have 2 and they are awesome. I've had many dogs in life and this breed is great, as long as you socialize and train them when they are young. They can be stubborn.

 

I think I mentioned previously that my neighbors have/had an Anatolian Shepard, nearly identical to the Kengal. While my buddy was backpacking in the Sierras, the Anatolian took down a deer in the front yard of a house in a rather hoity toity neighborhood. His partner had the dog put down. Super sad. They're awesome dogs, she visited our house quite a few times and was a real lover dog. But, LGDs and need to be working with a ton (10-20) acres to patrol.
Last yrs. Ca. fires in the wine country saw a family having to quickly evacuate and they were unable to secure their LGDs and live stock. When they were able to return to their property the live stock was OK and the dogs were there watching over and keeping 'em safe.
We have a huge Dane/Mastiff mix, absolutely not right for what @gosolo wants but fantastic companion/entertainment for the family.
My choice for would have to be Black Lab for excelling at ALL of your requirements.

 

Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I love mine to death and wouldnt get another breed. He is an amazing watch dog and fiercely loyal to its family. But unlike other retrieving breeds isnt afraid to tangle things up if need be. I would highly recommend because people think they are labs but arent super friendly with everyone that walks in the door.

A contractor friend had a kid who had been in some trouble and the contractor asked if it was ok if he worked for the day cleaning up. My dog wouldnt let him in the house. The other worker laughed and said "Man, dogs know things!".

This is Henry and any dog you get raw feed them. Way less health problems and worth every penny. Henry is 7 and looks like he is 1.

Yes training is a must. Everything with them is a negotiation, they are too smart. Do you know where on the east coat? I got mine from PA. The breeder is Pond Hollow Chesapeakes

 

Weimaraner definitely. Originally bred to hunt deer, bear, and wild boar but they will hunt anything birds, squirrels or even hide and seek with the kids. Hell my Male even like to jump on the trampoline with the boys. I've been around these dogs since I was a kid and would never own another breed. They are to smart sometimes.

 

Rescued dogs are the best.

Wow. Pricey up there. Our last two were $50 each, and they covered all of the initial shots and such.

 

Well, the search is over, for now.
The dog will be shared between my son and his family and myself and my wife.
Our properties are adjoined but since he’s got 4 kids, 4 years through 13, the selection was mostly all theirs.
A 9 week old Pyrenees girl!

I am no longer on the west coast. However, I can say I am very fond of my golden-doodle and poodle. If you look at the history of the poodle, it is actually a German water retriever. They are large dogs that are great with kids, super intelligent, have an intimating bark, and easily trainable. Poodles got a bad rap for the ugly hair cut rich people give them, but don't let that fool you. They are one of the best breeds out there.

 

I grew up with three standard poodles and they were the best. Just don’t cut them like bïtčhėš (even though half are)
