I have one explanation: cost reduction and co-production with Tundras on the same plant in Texas. Disappointment, yes, something to be expected in this age of ‘platforms’, unfortunately yes.

My wife and I had been on waiting lists at several local Toyota dealers waiting for a 22 Highlander Platinum Hybrid (wife is super picky and is only approving a specific color scheme) since mid-January. Well, my wife finally let me show her some pictures and videos of the new Sequoia and she is now on board! I am so happy! Haha.

I am more than dedicated to my 2020 Tundra TRD Pro and wont give it up for the new Tundra so the chance to instead compliment it with the new Sequoia makes me ecstatic. Im sure they will sell like hot cakes from the gate.

Plus, personally, I prefer the overall look of the Sequoia over the new Tundra.

They both look good, but I agree. The Sequoia is high and tight

Heard the Pro is delayed to 2023. Wonder what this does to the Sequoia since it's hybrid only.

Anyone have one on order? All new Tundra continues to be a mess, so I don't see myself being first in line for the Sequoia.

Tundra Pro hybrid is out to journalists for review so no delay I guess. I'm not seeing us in a '23 Sequoia. I was all enthused about better MPG then saw that goofy 6" hump in the middle of the cargo area for the hybrid battery.

I love better MPG but also love cargo volume, we don't get both with the '23 Sequoia. As a Land Cruiser replacement it probably will fill that niche.

Only thing for me is the LC (Did you mean the 600?) is too nice inside for two tiny and very messy kids. Also at 156k for the version I want, I'm not willing to pay it. I'd buy an 85k AT4 Tahoe first. There are very few cars I'd pay 150k for.

You could get a '23 Sequoia 4WD SR5 with offroad package for maybe $70k. We'll see the pricing . Rear locker, SRA, Crawl Control kinda emulates an LC300 and not in the ridiculous LX600 price range. I'm curious about the fuel tank size, if it's 22g that doesn't excite me.

Agreed, and 70k is the max I can see myself spending on a Sequoia.

No lunar rock for the 2023 TRD pro, what a shame. Salesmen reached out and looking at either a white platinum or solar octane TRD pro.

Crazy you might get a Sequoia Pro before most get a Tundra Pro.

Nah it’s just a list. Supposedly late summer production so probably early fall delivery. Plenty of tundras out by then

somebody school me on the specifics of this hybrid drivetrain.....

my understanding is that it's a battery-powered electric motor sandwiched between the engine and the transmission.....The electric motor is there for all the extra torque over the non-hybrid version that's in the Tundra and some energy efficiency..... The truck can move on battery-only power under certain conditions like stop and go traffic under 18mph, so that's a type of "parallel hybrid" vs the small-ICE-engine-recharges-a-battery-that-powers-an-electric-motor-to-spin-the-wheels "series hybrid"..... does / can the truck run in ICE-only mode without the electric motor, and if it can, when the battery inevitably fails in 15-20yrs will it brick the truck temporarily or will I still be able to run ICE-only? Sure the engine can fail in that time too (what's a wastegate? lol), but I am know plenty about that. If I'm going to slap down $70k on a new Sequoia, I at least want to know what I'm up against in the long run.

If it's like any other typical NiMH battery it won't brick itself overnight - it will start not being able to not be charged to 100% and then not be able to charge to 100%. I'm not sure if amount of charge is easy to find in these vehicles - but if it is you can keep an eye on that to see when you may need a battery replacement prior to the battery not being able to send out 0 energy.

Good question. Adds another segment to the debate. I'm inclined to staying with the old reliable 5.7l drivetrain.

My hunch is that it won’t brick the truck, but it would be nice to know ahead of buying.

If you're in a market for a full size SUV, what's your comfort level that a Expedition or Tahoe/Suburban and their luxury counterparts will last 15-20 years?

If we go full size, it’ll only be the Sequoia. Those others don’t have hybrid powertrains, the part that’s new to me. I guess I’m not so much interested in the guarantee that it won’t fail as much as the knowing what will happen when it does.

I've given up on the new Sequoia for now. Limited with OR package and a Pro grille swap would be sweet, but I've lost the faith. The new Tundra has way more issues than I expected. That truck is a year or two away from being Toyota right. The new Sequoia will have issues and I'd don't want to be in the test group there either.

We have three Toyotas and they just go. I don't want a COVID Toyota.

Came across this video that shows the TRD Pro version in action out in Moab. Interesting perspective. The guy didn’t hit on the hybrid system to much.

We had a 2006 Camry, the battery died and the car ran fine. It was a few k & months out of warranty. Toyota good willed the 5k battery, I paid 500 for labor. We traded it in & bought a Prius less than a year later.

I'm wondering the same. I would love to get better MPG but from what I've seen other jumbo SUV's are just "on paper" better MPG, realworld MPG is a different matter.
Thanks, finally a video showing the '23 in the wild. I still don't understand why it is hybrid only for all trims. A TRD PRO doesn't need 583tq and an SR5 for us peasants doesn't need 437hp/583tq. Us SR5 peasants need cargo volume instead of a 6" hump in the cargo area.
