Wouldn't there be signs of that? Leaks, grinding noises, rough shifts? Trying to learn :monocle:

Sometimes there is an indication (leaks, etc), but having low oil might not sound bad. Could be enough to keep quiet but still get really hot.

If you did a lot off-roading or stressed it in other ways, with 168,000....
Plus was did you ever change the oil in it?

Had just bought it. Showed no indication. Oil was fine. 3rd time engaged started clicking then banging. Then just gone.

Sounds like there was a lot of abuse with the original owner.

Could this have been the cause of leaving it in 4wd accidentally? i.e. original owner drives it in 4wd home from work , takes off in morning for work in 4wd over dry pavement? Just trying to figure it out
