Could someone give me instructions on where to locate the Headlight ECU and the wires needed for the CanM8 reader to work on the trucks with the premium headlights? I have a 1794 and the instructions provided in the thread by B5114 are for the non premium headlights. Thanks!

Behind the glovebox, it’s a bit of an effort to get to it. I put notes in my build if it’s useful

This is a better resource as I’m realizing I didn’t really post much in my build

Still need some guidance on where to locate the Headlight ECU for the premium lights equipped trucks. Thanks!

The wires you need for the CANBUS reader are behind the glovebox. You run the wires through the reader that triggers your relays, is that what you are speaking of? I didn’t mess with the ECU but the wires going to it. My Limited has premium headlights

from what I understand I need access to the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires that come out of the Headlight ECU, isn't that where you need to pickup the signal from for the premium headlights? I admit I am a bit confused about some of this and I do appreciate any help or guidance you can give me on where to hook this up inside the truck. Thanks!

Yes and the ECU is behind the glovebox but all you need is the wire harness coming out of it.
This thread discusses the harness and color of the wires that will trigger the reader to low/high beams. You will have to power the unit and I used an add a fuse to the fuses that are right there. Your relay will also need power off of the battery and your lights will need power via the relay.
This will work for premium lights

Now I think I understand how this goes together, I was under the impression that the wire locations were different for the standard light trucks and the premium light trucks. Your comments helped make it clear how this works. Thanks for your help!

Looking to run lights with signal from CANM8. Has anyone tried to pickup the signal of the canhi/canlow leading into the obd2 port?

No, and you're not going to b/c the "light" signals do not go through the ODBII port, hence why the instructions call for the interface to be connected (wired or wirelessly) to the proper signal wires close to the headlights or the ECU.
Read the instructions (if you're using the CANM8 device).

Interesting. CAN is a data bus, same data across the entire bus, should be able it read data stream anywhere on the bus -at least it is in the GM world. I ordered the canm8 with pickups. Trying to avoid tearing into the dash.

You won't be taking the "dash" apart, but you will have to stash + wire this up somewhere, so taking stuff apart is given regardless.

Since I appear to have been the 1st one to implement this I didn't feel like taking 1/2 the passenger side apar to find the ECU and put my signal reader there, so I simply ran the wires into the engine bay, and picked up my signal from the wires on the headlight itself (was running a whole bunch of wires to the engine bay regardless, so a couple more didn't bother me).
Someone else here connected on the ECU; don't remember if it's in this thread of elsewhere.

Realize something will come apart, that a given. Looking to minimize what I disturb. Near OBD port would be easier. Being a data bus, I'm curious to comments about being near a processor, if that was required - or not from actual experiences. For example, I'll be removing the radio to install sonic beat amp, would like to access CAN while in there.

@jctmundra, it's got to be there unless the headlamps are running at 250Kbaud. Your understanding is correct on bus operation. I'm not familiar with the device being used, but it is likely not filtering based upon a particular address/message, hence wanting their device located as close to the ECU sending the signal originally. It's a universal product and every vehicle will have a different address.

Heck, I've built the same functionality into my 2012 using a Raspberry Pi. While the older lights aren't operated by a CAN message, there is still one sent.

Wasn’t going to do this. But after watching lightwerkz video. I am strongly considering it. Few questions not sure if answered.

    1. does it damage the factory wires? Does it sense current through the casing or does it tap in?
    2. can I turn it off. As in my high beams will turn in without the light bar.
    3. if I leave the switch on does it draw power from the battery when truck is off?

I had my lightbar, switch and CANM8 installed by professionals. The installer did say that the CANM8 just attaches over the wires, but does not penetrate or tap into the wires themselves. The switch installed in the dash that was used will turn off the light bar if you want, but only when the high beams are activated, so I cannot turn the light bar on or off independently of the high beams. My truck sits for days at a time and I have had no problems with power drawing down the battery. I really like this setup, works great for what I wanted.

Could have told them to install a 3-way switch, so that (like me) you can have the light bar ON/OFF with high beams automatically, OFF no matter what, or ON manually.

    Side note:
CANM8 has been working for me flawlessly ever since installing it; love it.

I did not want the light bar to be able to come on without the high beams on, so that is the way I had it wired.

Installed the canm8. Super easy install and doesn’t damage the oem wiring. Highly recommend

would you need multiple interfaces if I was to install trd pro fenders, front and rear marker lights?
