It was going so smoothly until the c-clip came. Other than that I was able to wack it free in 2 hits.

 

I broke my snap ring plies trying to open up my old master cylinder. If only toyota had made their leaf springs out of the same metal as the c-clips.

 

Just file a new flat spot to grab with. Ill do mine, but i spent my round tuit.

 

stuffed some thin metal in between after lifting it up a little and used the metal sheet to get my pliers in

 

Get a flat head under,it and behind it, when you get the end of the clip out of the groove.and you can work it out slowly.

This. I've had good luck driving them off with a flat head (full responsibility for primitive Pete tool abuse).

 

Does anyone know the correct way to use this tool for getting out upper ball joints?

 

Put the nut on the threads? For my blazer i had to use several pieces of scrap metal to make it fit cause the kit didnt have the right sized adapters. I might have used a 3/4”-1/2” drive adapter on the press shaft.

 

Looks like the ball joint is almost out. Smack that sumbitch with the Ford wrench (hammer) and it should pop out

 

Vise grips for pliers, pliers for a wrench, wrench for a hammer, hammers everything else.

I’ve done UBJs twice and Jesus Christ, while thoroughly entertaining, this thread is full of some of the worst advice I’ve ever seen.

Plan to remove the whole spindle. It will make everything so much easier. This starts by removing the caliper and securing it so you don’t kink the brake line.

Then break the upper ball joint free.

The best way I’ve found to get the UBJ out from the UCA is using one of the 3 arm pullers that was shown in post #7. Get it snug and with two more turns of the ratchet it will pop right out. Leave the castle nut on to catch it once it breaks free.

After that, take the (4) 17 mm bolts free from the lower ball joint and the whole spindle is out. Put it in a bench vise and then use a rented ball joint press to unseat and re-seat the UBJ.

 

Everything I’ve done here is a good way to potentially screw something else up big time. But that hasn’t happened yet. I hope

 

Hey man, we all start somewhere. There are dudes on here that make me feel like I’m a beginner.

My best advice is watch a few videos of Timmy The Toyota Man on youtoob. He does a lot of 3rd gen 4Runner stuff which is nearly identical to our trucks. Toyota reuses a lot of the same engineering and geometry, they just scale it from gen to gen.
