I finally got in contact with TRS and they saw my hid setup. They also mention what you said that the 9006 bulb is not seating all the way in and that is my problem. So what they recommend was the HDh11 relay harness to be able to connect everything to the ballasts. And from there connect to my d2s bulb and adaptor. What sucks i got to reopen the passenger side because is fogging up Hopefully everything works.

Thanks for the great write up! I took advantage of Black Friday/Christmas sales and ordered everything I need to do my retrofit and LED bulb conversion. I just got my truck back from the body shop last week, and still have some stuff to get done before I can start working on the lights. Between that and a newborn, it might be a while before they get done. I have a spare set of lights so I can take my time.

I have a few questions. Where is everybody mounting the relay harness? Do you remove the grey sealant or just reuse what is there? TRS included free RetroRubber sealant during their BF sale. Does anybody know about the quality of Headlight Depot lights, mostly how the lens will hold up over time? I've heard that the lenses on some aftermarkets start to peel. I'm trying to decide whether to use the new Headlight Depot lights the body shop put on or the spare set of OEM lights I bought for $40. The OEMs have the leveling motors, but I have an '08 and I'm not sure if I'll add that feature down the road (found wiring harness and switch for $100). They need some work, lens needs to be polished up, and the DRL/turn signal housing has melted some. Obviously the Headlight Depot lights are in great condition.

I zip tied mine on the driver side to some mounting point in there (cant remember). It's between the battery and the fender I believe. Doesn't look too bad.
I bought grey sealant as well and never ended up using it. The Toyota grey was pretty heavy on my OEM headlights and when I pushed my lenses back into the housings, there was seemingly plenty there. I have noticed my passenger side does get a minor amount of condensation in the turn signal area during heavy rains. I may or may not fix this.
I've heard the same thing. The lenses don't have very good UV protection and will yellow/peel. Granted, I've never seen this, I just bought used OEM headlights from a guy on craigslist that also included levelers.

We just had some good rain this week. I noticed some condensation in one of the headlights this morning as I was leaving for work, so apparently the headlight depot lights aren't sealed great. I did end up getting silica packs and gor-tex patches when I ordered, just in case.

Thank you so much for this write up. I followed your steps this week and just finished yesterday. Headlights look great and the light output is amazing. My wife even commented on how much easier it is to see on a pitch black road. Also the high beam splitter is a MUST have. Holy crap!

For anyone considering this, do it. It’s not hard at all to do. Also, bite the bullet and get the morimoto projectors and lights. I originally ordered from DDMTuning to save a buck and not only did they ship me wrong projectors and missing D2S harness, the quality of what I did receive was crap compared to morimoto.

Excellent. This is exactly what I was looking for... someone who retrofitted a second gen and kept the halogen high beams and chrome look. Thanks for sharing

so when you're heating the lights to dissemble and reassemble are you putting the light in the oven with the oven still on or turning it off prior to putting the headlight in? I was under the impression that the oven needed to be off so you don't damage the light...

Are you sure it’s a 9006 splitter? That’s what I bought with my kit and it seems I need a 9005 splitter. I’m not seeing how this splitter i have is going to plug in where I need it to.

Well crap - I think you're right. High beams are 9005. My bad man, will fix the description.

I pulled my original order from 2018:

    Splitter: 9005M; 9005F / 9006F

Also - follow up - you can most likely still use your 9006 adapter. If I recall correctly, the only difference between 9005 and 9006 is the plastic dividers in it. You could possibly modify the plug or female end - but I am sure TRS will swap your 9006 for 9005.

I’d rather just swap it for the correct part. I am just driving my Tacoma in the meantime. Do I only need one splitter? I would think I’d need one for each side.

Just finished up the majority of my project tonight. The lights are a little blue for my taste but the camera makes them look pretty pure white. I may try one step warmer bulbs unless these just grow on me. Somehow my stock hi-beams are misaligned and that’s frustrating. The passenger side is good and the driver side shines way too low. I don’t imagine this will be a problem worth investigating once I get the correct splitters for the HID hi beams. Both low beams are slightly too high so I’ll likely adjust them down manually. On my drive I just took, I had the electric adjuster on a -3 to keep from shining into other cars. I prefer it at around a -1.5-2 on the dial. I’ll give ‘em a few twists when I open the hood to install the hi-beam splitters. I sure hope I got them sealed up well. I put two silica packs in each light as an insurance plan.

Looking high but getting there, do a proper garage door alignment and you'll be happy. As for your stock high beams, once you have HID high beams - you won't even notice if the stock ones are completely out anymore.

My driveway isn’t level so it’s difficult to use the garage door. That’s how I ended up with them being too high right now, ha

You're absolutely right. I have no hesitation now doing retrofits. My father in laws 2012 Kia Sorento died at 210,000 miles. I ended up buying a hail damaged 2010 Rav4 from CoPart out of Oklahoma City for him. Back glass, front and rear headlights were all smashed, but body took the hits pretty well. Used cheapo headlights on Amazon and factory taillights. I made sure to seal up the aftermarket headlight housings as the sealant wasn't the best. I used Amazon projectors and DDS Tuning bulbs and the outcome was still excellent.

I’m 2 or 3 years in with my retrofit and I agree, zero issues, love that headlight leveling still works, quad lights are the best, and the light output is amazing. Thanks again for the guide. It made tackling this project a breeze and more should retrofit their lights for the light output alone, but I also like the look.

Coming back to comment that my retrofit is now 4.25 years old and almost no issues. Still lighting and performing amazing!

However, I noticed some moisture in the passenger light for a couple years ago and it finally got bad enough that I couldn't ignore it any longer. I originally reused the factory eagle eyes butyl during the retrofit and it wasn't quite enough to seal the housing. So I had to reopen the light, get all the water out, clean it up, spend hours peeling old butyl out, and replace with nice new thick butyl.

    20240105_163836.jpg

The only other problems I have are the clear coat is peeling on the eagle eyes lenses, and the rubber seal around the low beams both got brittle and cracked. Another leak path. Do yourself a favor and swap the rubber seals from your OEM lights if you're retrofitting aftermarket housings. The OEM seals are much thicker and hopefully hold up to the heat better. Now all I have left to do is try out this Cerakote brand headlight restoration kit.

Thanks for the update. I might do the swap down the road. Disappointing to hear about the issues considering the exorbitant price.
