Sorry to hear, Sean, but please don’t apologize. You’re right in that life is precious and can be far too short. My dad has been fighting cancer for 17 years now, still holding the upper hand, God knows for how long, of course we don’t. He’ll be 65 in September, docs weren’t sure he’d make 50.

That said, I’m 36, but still get ID’d almost 1/2 the time on a beer run.

    Too many to list
Survey shows that 35% or more are in the age group 35-45.

I wonder if the ratios are same or similar for Tacoma owners. I see more Tacomas in Chicago then Tundra. My gym has a quite a few. I think its mostly youngers guys driving Tacomas.

Wow..... y'alls parents :( i feel so bad for you guys. And don't be sorry for sharing...friends are here for everything. Sean and Ron..... thank you for sharing...I'm so sorry for loss :(

I don't know what i would do if i lost either of mine. I've tried to imagine what life would be like if i lost either of them and i can't. When that day comes i don't think I'll be inconsolable. I'm a daddy's girl and my mom is like my best friend.

I hear ya. I was 33 yesterday. When I woke up today I was 44. I have a theory on the perception of the passage of time but that's probably too deep a topic for this thread.

    I'm game.

    Two things:
    1) as we age, our experience of the passage of time quickens due to having more experience with time. For a 5yo, 1 day is a larger portion of the life they have lived so far, where for me at 33 it's a tiny fraction.
    2) as we get older, our day to day becomes less memorable. Generally we do the same things day in day out with far less excitement and fewer memorable experiences day to day.

I think it's probably 80% the first and 20% the second. But this isn't my field of expertise, just a field of mild interest :)

Sounds about right. My childhood seemed to last a long time. So many memories. After about 22-24 it’s gone by so fast. Too fast!

Yep, this is pretty much it exactly IMHO. When you're a child everything is a new experience so you observe more and take the time to learn and understand what's happening around you. In short, it feels like you're doing more because everything is shiny and new. It's a similar effect to driving somewhere. The first time out it feels like it takes forever, but the trip back home seems to take less time because you're dismissing the stuff you've already seen. As we get older we're doing fewer new things and we're basically just going thru a routine day in and day out. That routine runs together over time so it seems like time has progressed more quickly because we have fewer memorable breaks.

Life is like a roll of toilet paper - the further along you are, the faster it goes. ;)

Making time to “stop and smell the roses”, helps.

I heard something to this effect that makes sense - may be wildly inaccurate:
Our prioritize memories for where danger is perceived. As a cave man making his way to the watering hole you'd carefully tread looking to recognize new or familiar dangers (lions, tigers, bears, and Oh My!s) - you're much more likely to remember a negative experience (or potentially negative) over a positive experience simply out of our nature for survival.

As a child everything is new and exciting, and after a certain young age you really start to grasp the concept of mortality (different with every kid - my 5yo was attached to my leg at 2, my 2.5 yo would still run out into traffic if I didnt force him to stay close). As we get older we get a better understanding of what is TRULY dangerous in the things that we do so it becomes less memorable.

Tying back to what we were saying - we usually working to build safe lives... or we come so accustom to the usual "dangers" our brains just filter them out. By the nature of doing basically the same thing in the same sort of environment day to day we've removed or become numb to the dangers involved and thus makes them less memorable experiences.

    It's a nice theory anyway.

Every moment has its roses, you just have to stop and notice them :)

    example:
Doing dishes is usually a dreaded task. It's even worse if the whole time you're doing them you thinking about how much you hate doing dishes and "WHY CANT THESE DAMN KIDS JUST WASH THEIR OWN DISH WHEN THEY ARE THROUGH WITH IT!?"
But if you stand there and enjoy the feeling of being alive it's a far less horrible experience: warm water on your hands. the feeling of the smooth clean dish under your finger tips. the floor under your feet. the feeling of gravity holding you to the ground.

Your attitude truly does determine your experience.

Better to appreciate each square than grab the end, like my 2yo, and run through the house until it's off the roll
It's a journey. If it was a race to the end I could win REALLY quickly (just reposition the finish line) lol

Makes sense. Our brains are wired to quickly analyze what we see and dismiss most of it w/o even realizing it. Magicians, thieves, mentalists, sleight of hand experts, etc exploit this in order to do whatever it is they're trying to do. There are some interesting 'did you see it' videos out there that show just how much we really dismiss throughout the day. It's kind of funny, but kids usually catch more than we do.

That's because they're young and dumb - dont know what to filter out yet lol
You can do a quick test without youtube:
Look around the room and notice all the blue. Count each blue thing.
Now, without looking back up, finish reading this then close your eyes.
From memory (eyes closed) count all the red items that were in the room.
You didn't notice the red because you werent looking for it.

The brain is definitely and interesting thing.
