This is bonkers... paid $34k less than a year ago...

Edit: Just realized I forgot to adjust the mileage, barely over 30k.

Yea you could sell it and then over pay for another one.

It’s kind of like the housing market right now. Just have to wait for it to stabilize

I am selling my 2019 to Carvana for $5300 more than I paid 2 years ago. I got a new 2021 for a not so bad price.

Someone posted on FB (take it for what that's worth) that there was a dealer asking $15K over MSRP for 2021 TRD Pro - salesman said they are not expecting any more Tundras for at least +40 days. Strange times...

California dealers are being ridiculous. Seen so many dealers trying to manipulate pricing and make a killing off people. Plus the used vehicles always have a lot more miles. Two purchases in a row now, I have tried to give them a chance and ended up out of state.

In March, ended up buying from Nebraska dealer. 2020 Ltd Crewmax 4x4 Trd off road with 10k miles and CPO for $46k+TTL and shipping.

Wifey wanted it to be a Calvary Blue, which certainly caused me to pay a premium and have very limited selection.

Almost bought a used Tacoma, but the dealer wouldn’t honor their advertised price. Then I tried to buy a Ltd (similar specs to above w 30k miles) for $43k and a dealer swept in and bought it, showed up on their lot a week later for $53k. Also had a purchase contract on a truck out of Minnesota, and then the dealer sold it out from under me to a local buyer.

From my experience, I usually wait till the next model year comes out, even with a new change or not, dealerships will need to get rid of previous model cause they will loose value if it doesn’t sell. Usually by October, all new coming up models will hit the dealership so they will need to make room for the new cars. I bought mine in the summer which they were offering $2500 cash back on the Tundras. I chose the 2019 over the 2020 model, cause there wasn’t much change other than apple CarPlay feature, push button start/stop ignition and a removed antenna.

Still got the V8, plus convenience package, all safety features, for selling price of $38k.

With the new Twin turbo V6 Tundra coming out next year, it doesn’t surprise me people are buying and holding on to the V8 Tundra. This may be why dealerships are jacking up the prices right now.

I purchased a used ‘19 SR5 4x4 Crew Cab with Upgrade and TRD pkg in Magnetic Grey with 41,000 miles for $37,500. I did a Vroom instant offer a week after purchase that was $4,000 more than I paid (it was more than my OTD price).

Felt decent about it - well maintained single owner. But it’s still a lot for a used truck.

In May 2020 (almost a year now) I bought my brand new 2020 Crewmax Upgraded SR5- TSS package for $42,000 out the door (this was the FINAL price including TTL, etc....) w/ 0% interest to boot. This was when the Covid B.S. was in full swing and the dealers were hurting and offering lots of incentives. After seeing prices lately I'm really stoked I bought when I did.....I keep all my vehicles for at least 10 years so the new V6 Tundra should have all the kinks worked out by the time I'm in the market again for a full-size truck! ;)

For mid-late March 2021 seemed like a pretty good deal from what I was seeing. And... I sold my 2006 Tundra DC 4x4 for double what I paid for it 6 mo earlier!

Here in Dallas I paid MSRP for my 2021 Tundra TRD Pro in Lunar Rock. With all the options it ended up being about 55K before trade in.

They don’t make the Army Green Pro’s for 2021. It’s probably the SR5 upgrade package. It’s technically not a Pro. That’s why cost is lower.

Paid 53k 14 months ago for my 20 Platinum. Had the TRD exhaust, skid plate, panel air filter, shifter, with moonroof and spray in bed liner. Got 2k back for financing 7k. Carvana would give me 52k right now, so for 12k miles and a year of ownership, I almost break even.

This thread just illustrates 2 Ling held thoughts I have.

    1. KBB is absolutely worthless as a "pricing guide" - any guide you use clearly states they are just that - a guide. They are not speaking to specific vehicles, just general market for a vehicle. KBB derives their INCOME from DEALERS...they make nothing from consumers...you pay zero to browse the site or use their guide. So of course they make the dealers who pay for their service look good.

I have no problem with this - featured listing and such are fine. However - telling me a 2021 RAM is worth more than sticker is simply a joke ! KBB also factors in the national average price paid INCLUDING FEES/TAXES and SERVICES in their price. This is a complete joke !! So when KBB says your car would sell for 48-52k...they mean including taxes, dealer fees and extended service contract offered by the dealer - based on the average long sheet for similar cars as reported by dealers in their pricing network. It's never what you would get selling private party on average....don't believe me...try selling your car at their pricing. Do it 10 times and if you sell all 10 in under 30 days you need to open a dealership - you are either a master salesperson or in a car starved area.

    2. Carvana/Vroom are overpaying for inventory and selling at a loss to gain momentum. Yes cars are outrageous and yes they have a far lower overhead cost. They also have investors who DEMAND big things. The moment the growth starts to slow - investors will head fir the doors.

Thing is they are getting a pass on profit these days. Investors will let them lose money as long as they are growing - think Amazon in the 90s...the pandemic has been a great catalyst for these guys and they are booming. Problem with booms is they are hard to maintain the huge quarters consecutively.

Right now they are overpaying - knowing they can resell fast and keep the momentum going. Now is a great time to be a seller - and I'd have no fear selling to these guys...buying - thats a 100% different matter.

So my buddy who is a loan officers at a bank, He said they have meetings at work about upcoming issues of people being upside down on car loans soon. I guess all used cars are inflated at the moment some more than others. When the market stabilizes with new cars again, the value of the used will drop since the demand will shift back to new cars.

I think that misses broader inflation though, just over the past six months the price for a new seeder and grain bins have both spiked something like 30% up here. The bins, we signed papers the day before the price increase and had to argue to get the lower price so that's 100% real. The seeder, we bought over the winter but were told by a subsequent buyer that the prices have spiked like that so maybe exaggerated but point remains.

Wood prices are also through the roof, commodities are all up... All this free Covid money might have been a big catalyst to kick up inflation. All this to say I think the new car market is about to get a lot more expensive too. Curious what the '22 Tundra pricing will be.

I'm also saying this to justify having just bought a used truck... But I also sold my first gen tacoma for more than I paid four years ago so it works both ways I guess.

Hmm something doesn’t seem right here. Wasn’t a crew max, right? Had to be a double cab. Or are you saying $41k after the $10k off from the 4Runner?

New to the Tundra Crew...and lovin it. A local (Palm Springs, CA Area) Buick/GMC dealership took a 2021 1794 4x4 trade in with 1,599 miles. It was 4 miles from my house so hard to pass up, considering the lack of dealer inventory and “market adjustment” over MSRP. The windows were already tinted, had the hard top Tonneau cover and spray on bed liner. Price came out to $52,831. The color (MBM) wasn’t my first choice but it’s growing on me.
