    Hi all,

I currently am running 265/70/17 tires, and after getting my new suspension put in this year I really want to move up to 33s, or in fancy French 285/70/17s. I know our trucks don't get good mileage to start with, but I was curious how much of an effect to look for if I do upgrade in size. Right now, when driving on the freeway going exactly the speed limit, between 65-70, I get upwards of 17.5 to 18 mpg. With a mixed mpg of about 15 and only in-town is about 12.

It's probably important to mention I have about a 2inch lift overall, with 5100/885s currently on my suspension, the added weight of a camper shell/toolbox, and just to make myself feel better than everyone my 12-pound onboard air compressor from harbor freight.

Does anyone have any input on this mileage issue?

I went from 265's to 285's. I'm sure my MPG took a hit but I don't remember it being horrible. On road trips I can still hit 17mpg which isn't bad considering how much stuff I'm hauling. I also have probably 400lbs of armor between my skid plates, sliders and bumper.

Around town I get approximaley 13.5 mpg with 295/70/17 with 0 offset. Relatively normal driving habits- usually... Highway road trip mileage is better. I keep the display on how many miles to empty:)

I thought the 5.7’s were some thirsty mofo’s? That mileage isn’t terrible

I’d factor in tire weight and whether I wanted at’s or mt’s. I posted weights on my tire swap below: (all weights from manufacture specs). Truck averages 14.5 around town.

    *265/75/16 bfg all terrains:53.6lbs
    *285/75/16 general grabber x3’s: 63.3lbs

If you want 1st-gen-only results, it's really the thread creator's responsibility to include "1st Gen" in the title of the post.

If @evanhmn wants, there's nothing stopping from clicking the "thread tools" option visible to the OP in the top-right of the 1st comment, and edit the thread subject.

Around 320 a tank on 265/75/16 P rated AT’s (15.8 mpg or so). Next set will likely be 285’s as this is no longer my daily. MPG’s be damned!

Tundra mileage over the generations.... 1st Gens.... 12-13 city, 16-18 Hwy. 2nd gens... 12-14 city, 16-19 hwy. 3rd gens... 14-16 city, 18-22 hwy (not the 24 like the EPA says). Not a huge increase in mileage over the generations. My 2nd Gen Tundra got maybe a mile or two better city and highway verses my 1st gen. My friends with the new Tundra say mileage isn't much better than when they had their 1st and 2nd gen Tundras. The big difference is tech and comfort. My 2nd gen Tundra was FAR more comfortable than my 1st gen. But I like my 1st gen. :)

2001 1st gen, I'm running stock size tires, and I just filled up this morning ($5.14 / gallon) and calculated 15.9 MPG mixed driving.

Just make sure you get SL rated tires if you are looking to get the best mileage with 285's. Toyo AT3's are the lightest I have found at 47lbs.

First tank when I had my 06’ I milked every gallon out of it.

I ran out of gas at the only spot on my road where I had zero cell service, but I got 430miles out of the tank. I literally put exactly 26gal in it to fill it up.

Bigger tires will make it go down. Expect 12-14 mpg after bigger tires. I paid attention to the tire weight when I was shopping. Obviously, tread will make a difference also.
I remember seeing weight differences anywhere from 10-15 pounds heavier than the Mickey Thompsons I chose. That adds up when you have 4 (+spare) and then any extra weight you add.
All that to say, those factors affect rolling resistance, engine workload, breaking performance, etc.
