I was gonna ask you if/how you had your weapons secured. I know that lots of folks would say that buying a gun and buying a safe to store it in go hand in hand.
Not that I blame you AT ALL for this. It was that scum bags fault for sure.

In some countries that I’ve been in, this is exactly how they deal with this kind of asshattery.

That is just sad. The guy is peacefully in his house, bothering nobody, and within minutes his life gets turned upside down because of an asshole thief. I hope things work out okay for him.

In most states, dropping someone outside your home will get you a rather nice vacation for a very long time, and a really empty bank account.

If someone is outside my residence trying to steal something, I have insurance. Not how I want to deal with it, but the average civil lawsuit at this magnitude will cost you $100k or more. Trust me on this one.

That’s for sure. I know someone that was sued for the owners dog excessively biting a thief. 15k.

When I took my CC class, they said don't shoot. . . but if you ever have to, and I mean really really have to, then make sure the perp doesn't live or you'll lose in a civil suit. Also, you're going to jail no matter what, the length of stay will be determined by the justification for the shot as determined by the investigation

Family can still sue for wrongful death, and it’s most likely it will come to just that. It really doesn’t cost them much, and the hearse chasing lawyers always offer free up front.

All I would say is that you were in fear for your life, I’m willing to cooperate and I need to speak to my lawyer. Then STFU.

I have seen people not go to jail for self defense on a break in here I Texas, but its very rare. And yes....i agree with your instructor..... the living can talk... the dead can't but forensics can.

My instructor was quite clear, the cops are great, but they weren't there and they are looking for the collar. They will trip you up, more so because you are either high on adrenaline or from the adrenal crash. The answer always is I need to speak with my lawyer before answering any questions.

Here in OK if the shooting is ruled justified, you are protected by state law from civil lawsuits, they can sue but the state has to defend you and the judge is bound by law to dismiss the case.

Nor can I afford one either. I don't even know anybody that really can.

Can't go wrong with a Rhino Metals safe or a good Liberty safe. Find a store that sells safes not a bug box store like bass pro or Cabellas they sell junk.
