Indeed, the new Tacomas have arguably the worst transmission of any vehicle I've ever driven. I genuinely mean that. But that motor and it's torque zone.....it exacerbates it. On a daily basis I got annoyed with that truck. It was completely gutless getting onto the highway. I could floor it and feel the transmission fighting me. I hope the new Tundras don't have a similar feel for the sake of MPG's. I think the quest to make pickup trucks get sedan MPG's is going to ruin trucks.

Tundradude34 on his YouTube channel a week ago spread the rumors his {reliable} source told him. Turbo V6. Aluminum body or at least an aluminum bed. And maybe an electric engine to help the v6? He hopes they will keep the current V8 or a V8 as an option.

I'm hopeful they keep the V8 as an option as well. I know that while viewership is down, Toyota has a lot invested in NASCAR, and they need a V8 to be able to run in that series. My understanding is they couldn't do away with V8's in their production line and make a "one off" engine for NASCAR, I think in theory NASCAR vehicles are supposed to emulate their production counterparts in certain ways. I now the Camry obviously doesn't come with a V8, but the Tundra (think trucks series) does.

I’ve been told by a friend that works for Toyota that the 5.7 is sticking around along with a twin turbo V6 and a hybrid. But this rumor puts the v6 and hybrid together as one which sounds more like Toyota.

Im holding out hope that they stick with the same 5x150.... Thats why I'm so hesitant about buying new wheels... I'm cheap and wheels are not a high priority since they don't really improve function. If I got myself to cough up some cash for Scs I would want to switch them over to the new truck in 5 or 6 years when I trade mine in....if I couldn't I'd be butt hurt about it.

Maybe it’s just because we’re in the “season of lying” in regards to NFL teams, but I kinda wonder if everything that’s leaked by Toyota in regards to the new Tundra is just a smoke screen. Make the big 3 think, spend money to try and find out the validity of it, etc. But in all honesty, maybe I’m just hoping for the 5.0L V8 that’s been talked about as a potential replacement for the 5.7L. Believe that’s a Lexus motor as well.

That's the motor they use in the LC 500 and 500h. Doesn't get the mileage that the V6TT does. The regular 500 v8 is only rated at like 16...and that's for a car. The 500h is rated at 27mpg... But at least it's not a TT. The 500h is a Atkinson cycle v8 with an electric drive. That might sound like a more attractive option for those of us wanting to avoid turbos.

    I stand corrected... The LC 500h is a V6... Just the regular 500 is a v8.

I think this new Tundra sounds badass personally...but I like change and new tech in vehicles and just happy to see my favorite truck addressing the many glaring weaknesses it has.

I really don't care about MPG's to a point. I would take a wash on the MPG front to get those power numbers they are throwing out there. If true this thing will be a pulling machine. I would love to see how fat that torque curve is down low with a turbo hybrid system. :muscleflexing:

Oh and Toyota...please give me the option for a true premium sounds system like your Mark Levinson systems in some of your other vehicles/brands. (a guy can wish)

    This, This and This...

I had no idea how much I really disliked my 16' Tacoma until i drove my 19' Tundra off the lot... I disliked my 3.5 but having never drove the Tundras 5.7, it was night and day. I'll keep this "aged" technology even if it means I spend a few bucks more at the pump which BTW, a round trip day to Heinz field from NE OH for the Garth Brooks concert last weekend got me 18.8 mpg there and 19.1 coming back in my TRD Offroad Tundra. I couldn't have gotten that in my struggling 3.5 Tacoma... no way.

EDIT: agree about the gearing in the Tacoma... perhaps it was mainly that but i just never felt the balls kick in for any gear. Always felt like a cruiser motor not a truck.

The 5.7 resale value may get a boost if this happens.

And I highly doubt Toyota would stop offering the 5.7 in the new Tundra. Look at Lexus, they offer both turbo 4cyl and NA v6 in several models. I’m sure the same will hold true with the Tundra. Even Ford still offers the 5.0 in the F150 for the v8 crowd.

IF they put out 450hp 500tq and 30mpg, the mass market wont care about the 5.7v8. It will be just as big a wave as the original 5.7 was, ya know when it made more hp, more tq, and got equal MPG than its comp.
IF they put out the above numbers, the mass market will cringe at the price.

Id add, IF they put out the above numbers, Id buy the shit out of it

I had a 2012 Camry XLE and now a 2014 Avalon Hybrid for a daily driver. Mid 40s mpg and comfortable ride with plenty of power. No belts. all electric A/C, Water pump, power steering. No Starter (uses the electric drive for ICE start and seamles shutdown at stops when charged. They have Re-gen brakes that typically last over 100kmi since contact is only at end of stop. Re-gen brakes control cruise downhill. Toyota by far makes the most reliable hybrid powertrain system.

My Tundra only has to pull a fishing boat and snowmobile trailer so I'd be interested finally in a new Hybrid Tundra. I like the current but not enough to coax me out of my ever reliable 2010 DC (non-de-contented). Toyota has said for years that the plan was to offer a Hybrid version of all their vehicles and they've been going in that direction. Only a few of the bigger vehicles don't have the Hybrid option and they're likely the hardest for a hybrid application.

I'm very interested in a Hybrid Tundra, but maybe not a first year release. With our 2012 Camry XLE hybrid (first year) and had absolutely no issues with that vehicle, and just went to the Avalon for more room for my height (trouble free [powertrain also). Have to see how a Hybrid fares for a work/tow truck. The V-8 may still be the best option for heavy hauling and everyday hard work.

While this is all speculation, I'd think if any engine went away it would be the 4.6l v8. The 5.7l v8 would probably get better gas mileage if the transmission had more gears, too (like an 8sp or 10sp)

    Agreed about the mileage.
Put a trailer on my old 2.7 turbo Ford with 10 speed tranny and it got worse mileage than my 19 Yo Tundra.

If the new Tundra has the power specs this thread claims it will have and somehow gets 30 MPG, I'll eat my boots.

If the twin turbo f150 got dramatically more real world mpg than the v8 trucks, nobody would be buying the v8 trucks...
