Is Mister Rogers saying "No, it's higher than 17.1" in sign language?

WTF. I go in for my first service and what did they do? My MPG went to shit. I thought the first fill up might have been a fluke. Second one confirms it. A tire rotation should not effect it that bad. They only have 5k on them.

Any one else run into this?

It is a 5.7, and after adding the winter tires it's now stuck at 17.0 mpg.

I averaged 22.5 going from Torrance to San Juan Capistrano for a wedding. On the way back it dropped to 21.0. Maybe is it downhill when driving south on the 405 to the I-5...haha. I did reset the mpg's right as I hit my cruising speed of 72, right under 2k rpm's. Not sure if people get into the details for the road conditions but I did not have to hit the brakes once so that probably helped tremendously. And next time I will take a picture too!

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
Just averaged 10.4 MPG on a 400 mile tow through Oklahoma. I have the 5.7l, and towed a 24 foot (6800 Pound, when fully loaded) Travel Trailer with a 20-30 MPH crosswind (at 70MPH). She had ample power for towing but if I wanted to use that power she sucked down the fuel like.... well never mind on that one. lol

The impression is the Tundra 5.7L is reliable and long-lived. Its downside is it's a gas guzzler, or "fuelly" as someone else posted here.

First 260 miles after buying the 2016 used, going over 4 snow covered Colorado mountain passes, got 19.4 mpg. Was hugely surprised. Didn’t reset and now with another 500 miles of city driving I’m down to 16.6. Guess that’s closer to reality. 443B1058-BA59-4F93-A8BF-1A1C1FD83D75.jpg

5.7 L iForce? Well, at least that's a target to strive for :) Guess i might have to start driving like my wife........

Do the 2019's have fancy engine features that help?

Experimenting with tire pressure over the past 18 months (since starting this thread with my awesome 17.1mpg) shows me it makes a huge difference in gas mileage. Summer time highway tires inflated to 40psi can get great fuel mileage. Like 19.5 mpg. Winter time knobbies at 36psi get 15 mpg. Obviously a lot depends on your road topography, your driving habits, etc. Whether you tow, or not. But tire types and tire pressure are big factors, I have found.

This was from this past summer, most of it was highway. What a magical day that was. I've never been able to reproduce this result. I have a 5.7.

Good to know. I confess, I bought it a few weeks ago and have not even checked the tire pressure. Will do today. And was reading today about Beast Mode, which of course I have to try at least once for fun, but then some say Tow/Haul mode actually helped their mileage when their foot was not in it. I'm skeptical, but should try that for a tank.

Also, having only driven it in the snow a little, i am inclined to get a winter set of tires like i have for my Highlander and Prius. I wonder if that'll make much difference on a pickup truck. Makes a world of difference on other vehicles. The Hancook Dynapro ATMs don't seem to bite much on the ice.

Our extensive and unhappy experience with Hankook snow tires is they are dangerous. They have no bite on snow and sent our cars sailing through intersections with stop signs and traffic lights. Now all our vehicles (Toyota RAV4s, a Tacoma, a Tundra) wear only Bridgestone.

I pretty consistently got 17 avg on my 2nd gen, but it was a DC 2wd on OE size tires so a lot less weight to haul around. I still get roughly within EPA mileage numbers on my current truck with 34s.

17mpg seems like a standard average for the double cabs. Intriguing, to me, because both of our previous Tacomas got about 18mpg. Maybe 19 on a flat, straight highway run. Here we are getting only very slightly less mpg on a much more powerful engine and much heavier vehicle. So the 5.7 iForce is a good enough solution.

Have you tried increasing tire pressure a bit? Try 39, 40, 41 psi

I have a couple times, when the mpg varied significantly from what the truck had gotten previously. Unfortunately, the numbers checked out. Seems outside temperature and tire pressure are bigger factors on these big trucks than on the smaller ones.
