Hey everyone, I just installed an Infinity Kappa 5 amp as well as Tech12volts K170's group-buy deal and one of his 10" JBL subs. I have the JBL system and I'm using a Maestro DSR-1. Sounds pretty good but I haven't played too much with it. I know how to set the gains and some of this stuff I'll just have to play with but some of this maybe an easy this or that setting. Reading the manual I'm thinking....

    Input level - low
    Auto turning - on
Bass boost - I’ll play with
    Crossover filter - High pass??
    Gain - I’ll play with
Crossover filter freq - I’ll play with
    Sub input selector - Ext
    Subwoofer phase - ?
Subsonic filter - I’ll play with

    Any help appreciated!

Crickets but I get it...hard to do over the internet. James was kind enough to send me his settings for the amplifier. He stated he usually turns the gain up to 50% on his installs. When I tried this tonight there was noticeable hiss (with radio on and no music playing) even turning the gain up just 10-15%. When I turned gain down below 5% you could no longer hear the hiss. I double checked my ground and all wires and everything looks good.

Now...with the gains set to zero the system is very loud and at 45 is sounds twice as loud as stock - not just in absolute volume but the amount of sound being produced so I'm not too concerned. Just wondering why I wouldn't be able to turn the gain up at all without hearing hiss and apparently James can?

Granted, I am not there hear this "hiss" that you are reporting, but if you are hearing it with no music playing.... That does not sound like a "gain" issue. Rather, it sounds like you possibly have a "ground loop" happening. If so, it is probably being caused by a poor ground connection from your head unit or amp. Or, it could sometimes be caused by output RCA cables running parallel, adjacent to your amp hot wire. I could be wrong, but if you have not checked that out yet, that should be an easy fix.

I spoke to James at tech12volt and he said it's due to the BT unit in the HU. He stated if I had held a tweeter up to my ear with the stock JBL amp still installed I would've have heard the same static albeit at a lower level. When you turn up the gain the hiss gets amplified. The goal is to not eliminate the hiss but turn up the gain as much as possible that the hiss isn't easily detectable will the other noises of the truck present. Unfortunately, this is an issue with the HU. I searched and there are multiple posts here and on Toco forums with the same complaints.

OK... Well, I'm glad that James helped you out. He just shipped my sub box this morning, so he seems to be helping many of us, here on tundras.com. I had no idea that the Bluetooth component of the JBL head unit caused a hiss. Glad I'm swapping my factory HU for a Kenwood!

Thank you! James from Tech12volts emailed me his typical settings and it sounds pretty damn good.
