Sorry for the long wait. Here are some pictures. As you can see, I cut ~1.5inch squares in the plastic with a multi-tool that are just big enough for the back of the bracket to sit in. This is best seen in pics 5 and 6. I did have to remove the deck rail system. Frankly, I wasn't a big fan of it anyhow. You are able to see the "hooks" I installed and provided a link to earlier. They are just black triangles. I used the screw holes and screws that came with the deck rail system for this. As such, there is still very good access for tie-down locations.

Also, you can see the mx4 sits very low and the curved tailgate is not a problem. It is very waterproof. I keep my golf clubs in there and they get just a little wet when going through the car wash. Even in heavy rails, I have not noticed any water in the back. tun1.jpg tun1.jpg tun2.jpg tun3.jpg tun4.jpg tun5.jpg tun6.jpg

Thank you for the photos. Quick question??
Did you order the Backflip MX4 with or without the bedrail system to get those cover clamps?

They comes with both models. Don’t get the the for the bed rail system. That one would allow someone with out the boxes to lower the deck rail system so it could still be used. However, the boxes prevent this from being possible.

I have new trail version and I am toying with the notion of removing the bed cargo bins. Was your removal done without any issues?

Removal was easy. You need to remove the cargo tie down near the tail gate, the bolts that hold the rail system to the bed, and then one bolt on the interior of the tool box. All you need is a star bit and and a screw driver.

If your truck is like mine, there is a spot at the bolt through the box where there isn't any bed liner installed, but is should be an easy touch up. There are some pictures I posted up in my thread on installing my tonneau.

I’m opting for the soft roll up as well similar to the one posted here. I talked to a couple different truck accessory places and this is what they all recommended without having to make any modifications or removing the boxes. I would have preferred a either a hard or soft folding cover, but I don’t want modify it too much. I also don’t want to store the boxes in my garage and have to reinstall later. It’s a lease and not sure if I’ll be keeping it after the times up. Definitely sticking with the Tundra, but it’ll just depend on what the deal is at the time on whether I keep it or lease a different one.

Thank you. So your found bare metal spots under the removed bed bins? IOWs, incomplete bedliner spray job prior to attaching the boxes?

Yes. There are missing spots in the bed liner, not the paint.

Hi CorsoTundra, did you order the X15 model for installation with the deck rail system or without?

Just got my 21 Trail Edition and love the bed storage but need a cover as well. This look like what I’m looking for thanks for posting.

Wonder if a dealer would touch up that bare spot or if it would look odd afterwards....

    No worries.
I’m pretty sure a rattle can of touch up would do the trick.

Howdy. I have a brand new 2021 CM in the Trail Edition, which comes equipped with the slim profiled, but sturdy lockable storage bins (one over each wheel wheel). I removed them to maximize bed use. I will likely sell them if my friend does not want them. I posted here because my account here is less than 30 days old so I am prohibited from posting new threads (I tried to do so on the marketplace forum). Don’t want to derail the original scope of this tread but maybe this one time:

I am posting this to gauge the interest level of the members. As a frame of reference, I don't know what the dealer charges for them, or if they even offer them over the counter since they are relatively new item (I called a dealer and was clueless). Anyway, please chime in if that might interest you. Any feedback as to their worth is appreciated. By the way, they install simply with two Torx nuts.

I found this video, which provides a good overview:

That's good to know. I have that same cover already, so if any of these boxes show up for sale near me I may just grab them.
I like the idea of these boxes since it really only takes up the mostly unusable space around the wheel well.

I'm looking at a cement trail edition, has anyone else come up with tonneau cover solutions? I currently have have a backflip cover on my 17 crewmax and it leaks a little. So I'm up in the air as to what cover to go with on a new truck. I may just go with a soft color, idk?

did you have to mod the installation in anyway? I’ve got the exact same color and truck as you all the way out in the Big Island and I need a cover. Trade winds out here are out of control sometimes!

when I looked up the cover you specified on Amazon, the manufacturer responded to my query that it would not fit! There answer was not easy to understand.

should I get it with the track rail system? Without?

I’m tempted to purchase it anyway and see what happens.
Can you post a link to the exact purchase?
    Thanks!

I find it funny on the Amazon listing for that tonneau cover it specifically excludes trucks with trail edition boxes in the title even though you both have it and are happy with it. https://www.amazon.com/TruXedo-Roll-up-Tonneau-1463801-Toyota/dp/B0711RQJ7B?th=1
