For those of you that have had 4 runners which generation is better as far as engine wise with less issues from the 3rd Gen. And the 4th Gen.

Also as far as off roading what is the bigger difference between both of them if any

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
    Both made in Japan.

    3rds use the 3.4 vs 4ths use a 4.0.

4ths upgraded the 4.0 w/VVti in '05, good for an extra 40 ponies/#s of torque.

4ths also had an optional 4.7v8.

Both highly reliable, some claim the 4.7 4th gen is the most reliable of all, yet I also read many, many folks with the air injection problems on these 4.7s.

As far as off-roading, 3rds gens had an optional electric rear locker thru 2000. I'm not 100% certain, so someone chime in, but I believe 4th gens only have the center diff as lockable from factory. Starting in 2001 3rd gens began using a center diff lock and did away with the rear locker, that feature I believe continued thru the 4th gens life span. May never need a locker, so otherwise both are very capable off-roaders right out of the box.

Limiteds have the most features, safety and personal touches.

Sorry no experience with the 4th gen. We have had 1-2nd gen, 2-3rd gens and our current 5th gen. The 3.4 is a very good engine though it could use some more oomph. One of the things to watch out for is the dreaded pink milkshake. If I remember correctly it was caused by a corroded cooling line. I never had this happen.

Our 99 and 97 had rear lockers both had 4.30 gears. The tailgate sometimes will not open and you will need to take apart the rear door to work on it.

The heater core up under the dash has been known to leak, again never had this happen to us.

If I can remember anything else, I will post as I remember.

I ran 32" and 33" tires the 4.30's were good to go. If you go bigger or heavier re-gear it.

If it has a locker it will have 4.30's on the limited's and some SR5's. Some limited's also had a center locking diff with the all wheel drive option our 97 had both center and rear diff lockers.

No locker they are running 4.10's.

My 99 loved blowing rear maker and break lights. It ended up being a grounding issue. Once I replaced the ground cable with a bigger gauge wire it was happy.
