    Some really great ideas here!

I try to mix it up and not be too predictable. Did the flowers at work for a few years...then flowers at home. Dinner out is not done on Valentine's Day, too hectic. Rather do that on any other night.

This year I'll make dinner and her favorite is prime rib/ baked potato so that will be on the menu. Haven't thought through dessert yet. I know if we went out this would be what she'd order.

I'll assemble the flowers for the table and have as much prepped in advance and hope to greet her at the door when she comes home with a glass of wine. Dinner will be put in the oven and timed to be ready after she relaxes a bit.. with more wine of course!

A Valentines card who's message is meaningful.

    A quiet night!

Just remember culturally defined "holidays" were invented by corporations to infiltrate our pocket books. Shame and guilt are put to great use on Valentine's Day. Hold the Line.

wow, you guys are romantic, your wives/girlfriends/side-bitch/baby momma would be proud. I can’t write a letter because my handwriting would make my wife laugh and it’ll be the joke all day. I’m keeping it simple with some edible arrangements gifts then penetrate her later, thank you lady(ies?!) and gents!

    Seriously though,

Anytime we break from our routine we become unpredictable which can keep the fires going.

As far as handwriting is concerned if it's illegible enough then you could have been a doctor!

This is an elaborate plot to trick "basic white girls" into spending more money on shit that they don't need (think pumpkin spice latte). Many of these "essential oils" have proven to be health hazards (especially if you have pets in the home).

Don't buy in to the hype. The same people who use "essential oils" think that the earth is flat and try to force their vegan lifestyle on you.

Wife asked me what I wanted....for future help to others, "I'd like to go to bed early and sleep alone" is not a good answer......

I offer this advice to younger guys often....never, I repeat, never give flowers for any event/holiday. You will be required to do it until you die. Give them at random times, much more bang for your buck.

If you are going to ignore my wisdom, I had a woman working for me years ago who got flowers and candy the day after Valentines. She said her husband gave her two options when they first got married. He would spend the same amount of money the day of or the day after when everything goes on sale. They had been married 50 plus years.

    oh, one thing.

if you buy flowers, get her a card and write something in it.

dont be stupid like me and hope that the pre-written message within the card is "enough"

Wife and I don't do gifts anymore. Been married for almost 30 years and nothing to buy that is special. Whenever she mentions something for herself or one of her many animals. I make a mental note and add it to her project list. She would rather me spend a day working on her chicken coops to make her life easier and then throw something on the grill, than fighting everyone else out in public

I ended up asking my wife the morning of Valentine's Day what she'd like for dinner and she said probably leftovers. She was not being sarcastic.

I asked; if we did go out what would you order? She said seafood! I was surprised she didn't say a steak. So I said I'd try to get home in time to have something ready. She said don't do anything big.

For many years of our marriage that was the norm. Keeping it simple meant maybe a purchased or a handwritten card with one red rose. On other years it'd be some chocolates but not expensive ones. Our frugality is not as necessary now.

I can make the occasional meal and I can purchase flowers much cheaper from a wholesale florist and arrange them myself. Their cost is low when done like this.

My wife means more to me each year and I want her to know that. Here are the flowers I arranged and the wine/ cheese/ grapes that were ready when she got home. She expected shrimp because we had them in the freezer. I did go overboard I admit it! I bought lobster tails and crab meat and prepared that. A first for that combo.

It's been almost a week since Valentine's Day and the flowers are blooming and have a nice smell.

She still talks about her Valentine's surprise and I'll lay dollars to donuts this evening was less than if we had gone out.

This is what the lilies/flowers looked like that evening:

Later in the week they are blooming more:
