Hey guys, so I prototyped an 1/8" aluminum version with a lip in the back (as requested), but it didn't work out as hoped.

I am looking into a 2nd attempt at an aluminum v.2.

In the meantime, I have a handful of the powdercoated steel v.1's available. They have been working out really well, they will save your tailgate from forklift impacts, welding gas bottles and dents from hauling lumber and pipe.

In for an aluminum v2. Any reason why you went from 3/16 steel to 1/8 aluminum?

I've been looking for something like this for the 3rd gen....but I'm after something that actually sits over the face of the tailgate to protect that part as well....

By the way, what WSDMetal says about the 2 outer holes is true. I countersunk those 2 holes in the cap. They were slightly mis-aligned with the tailgate, but not enough to prevent installation of the bolts. I suggest checking the hole alignment first, before you CSK them. If it's off, then you could "pull" the holes so they line up better. In my case, it worked out fine...

no need to drill holes in the truck. I countersunk the 2 outboard holes, but it's not necessary.

So how do I install the bolts on the inside of the cap? The holes where my plastic one was connected are too big.

You should not have to drill any holes.

If you're saying the factory holes are too big, the kit is supplied with large washers to fill the gap.

If you can message me some photos, I can assist further. Thanks

Another installation tip. To install the fasteners you have to remove the tailgate access panel. What's not so obvious is that there's a good way to help avoid dropping the nuts and washers inside the tailgate: First install the fasteners through the forward flange with the tailgate closed (so the bolts are horizontal); then open the tailgate and install the fasteners through the top flange (again so those bolts are horizontal). If you try to install the nuts and washers on a vertical bolt, you might end up dropping them inside the tailgate... Don't ask me how I know.

Very interested in the next version and great idea! My tailgate cap is already beat up pretty well from loading in dirtbikes, lumber, etc.
