anyone use any drawer safes for a handgun in their side table? There are so many options out there, not too sure which one to go with. Want something that fits in my drawer and has quick/reliable unlocking method.

    I have two different ones.

    First one, Stack on

I really like this one. It is about right for a G19/17 or full sized 1911. Fitment is tight, so gun will not slide around. Has key access or code. I really like this for travel since the gun doesn't bounce around. Come with a lanyard as well.

This is my other one. Rather large, gun will bounce around inside, but you can put a G19 and 10 mags inside. Comes with lanyard, but has never left my home. Very bulky.

No, the sentry is not biometric.

I do not use the electronics on the stack on as well. The keys are in my possession at all times.

I take the curiosity out of guns with my kids. The other day my oldest wanted to know how a bullet worked and how it can kill something.

I unholstered my G19, unloaded, showed her how to strip it down. I then took a bullet and placed it in the barrel. I then showed her the striker, how the primer/powder ignite, and how the bullet travels down the barrel.

Then I had her reassemble the weapon. She needed help with the recoil spring and that was it. IMG_0513.jpg

My kids are not curious about weapons and know how they work. They also know that the sole purpose is to defend yourself as a last resort.

I'm glad you are looking into this @BlueBottle

In the last week in my city, a 3 year old shot his 2 year old brother with his moms gun. Sad

I have Fort Knox with the 5 button mechanical code KABA locks. I can get in in 1.6 seconds.
Good idea to have your medicine behind a locked door too. A 4 year old boy is curious about everything.

Oh man I could go on and on about how much I hate my handgun safe and the lousy customer service from the manufacturer.
Lets start with the best thing about it.....You can Never get the biometric scanner to work and for some reason after i bought it randomly the door would be open. Yes that is also the worst thing about it. I can't get into it and neither can anybody else unless the door was just randomly open. I currently have a Liberty Safe HDX 250. Now to be fair to Liberty I had an issue with the scanner not working shortly after I purchased it and the door issue. I called them and they told me to send it to them so they could fix it. Ok i figured it was a fluke and I paid return shipping. Three weeks later it was back to me. It looked exactly as it did when I sent it to them so I called them. I don't remember what they said about the door but the scanner they didn't find anything wrong. At the time I was working with cryogenic gases and abrasives a lot. This would cause my skin to dry out and start to crack. They blamed this as the issue with the scanner. I thought ok i can buy that and they told me to rescan my finger once a week so that the latest print was in the memory but not to delete any of the old ones. This worked for a couple of months. Then one day I went to get my edc out of the safe and i noticed the status light wasn't on which was weird because it was plugged into the ac outlet and had a good 9v battery backup. I left it like that for months and just used the key for a while. About a month ago i contacted Liberty again about this issue. I got the same guy as last time and he pulled up the history we did some troubleshooting and he determined the scanner and everything needed to be replaced. He gave me an RMA. The next day I went to ship it back to them and the packing place wanted almost $100 for boxing and shipping. For the slowest cheapest shipping. Nope I am not paying that so i emailed them and told them what happened. Their response was our shipping department said you could probably get it shipped for $20.
Ok..... I am not going to spend any money to send you something that has worked maybe correctly for 3 months out of the 1.5 years i have owned it I told them. I told them they needed to pay for boxing and shipping and got no response.

Anyway clearly I wouldn't recommend any one buy this safe unless you are prepared to use it to beat an intruder with so that you don't have to actually pull your firearm.

I also am interested in what works great for people.

    end rant

One more reason I don't use electronics on my pistol or rifle safes.

biometrics is a good idea in theory...I'd be all about it for my big safe except I can barely work the ones on my phone to unlock it and almost always have to swipe 3-4 times...soooo

I feel like i've seen some recently that use RFID technology to unlock which I feel is more reliable than biometrics

Never get the biometric safes. They are notoriously unreliable. Not something you want to mess with the one time you need you gun NOW. I have never had an issue with the electronic ones. I just replace the batteries once a year and g2g.

    Never even considered one.
I was showing my nephew whippersnapper my new smart phone and we were talking about the fingerprint touch and i told him i was not going to use it. He says it can tell if the body is dead or alive.

Exactly my problem with it. Great theory...horrible idea in reality. I wouldn't give this POS away for free in the off chance someone relied on it and it failed them. What a waste of $200 something bucks.

I have a V-line drawer safe. I like it - it’s got a 5-button lock that is easy to use. I didn’t need anything that I would have to fumble with in the middle of the night.

Will hold two handguns, I just keep my Glock 21 and an extra mag. I think the current version is the Brute.

I use an Amazon Basics safe in my night stand. It was a gift and I've had it for a long time. It works well.

    https://www.amazon.com/Caja-de-segu...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

It accepts a configurable PIN but also a key. I prefer to open with the combination as it's faster. Whatever safe you get, practice opening it until it can be done without mistakes while you're groggy and it's pitch black.

I keep two pistols in that safe (CZ SP01 and CZ-P01), and a spare loaded magazine for each. My Sig Sauer P938 goes on top of the nightstand, outside of the holster, each night when I undress for bed. In the morning it goes right back on. Everything else stays in the big safe downstairs.

People will have preferences as to which type of safe to get and how to unlock it.. Truth is the only thing that matters is that it's relatively quiet to unlock (if the same uses buttons that BEEP you need to be able to turn that function off) and that you can open it reliably and quickly. Practice is important.

I agree with others in this thread about teaching familiarity and safety to kids. In some study the compared behaviors between children who had no firearms experience and children who were familiar and had been taught to respect the tool and how to be safe around it. The test method was to leave the kid in a room (like a regular livingroom setting) and leave a gun (replica, non functioning but otherwise very realistic) on the table. The adult left the room and they observed what the children did. Children with no experience or exposure, except what the see in cartoons and on TV, were magnitudes more likely to pick up the gun and start playing with it. Children who had received prior instruction from their family were much more likely to leave the room and notify an adult that there was a gun on the table without touching it whatsoever.

A kid will never respect a gun until they have a chance to shoot it (or another gun) and see it's destructive power. Until they witness this first hand it just doesn't sink in. Take your kids out and teach them to respect the tools!

My son on the left, his friend on the right. This was my son's friend's first time shooting a gun. His dad is a police officer and this surprised me - but also made me feel pretty good when his parents let him come out with us and shoot for his first time.
