So should I look for one that has had the bags already replaced with coils, springs and shocks?

I would look for as stock as possible because some owners (no offense ) who have replaced the bags to coils, corresponding shocks and a level kit think they are FREAKING GOLD with damn near 200k on em. There was one here in Nashville with KO2's and the coil swap with level spacers and dude wanted 15k for it!

With the average cost of a decent to good condition one around 6-9k; I'd advise you to go pure stock and pour the rest into converting it to your specs.

Like I said earlier, I have some time. 1 in college and one still in high school. If everything goes as planned maybe in 2 or 3 years.

I'm really digging the first one!

I hear that! We're on the Dave Ramsey debt snowball and are near the end so that's when we'll start on this build. The trucks is REALLY good shape in its stock form so we should be okay for the next year. Then we'll start turning wrenches:yes:

Post it as you do it. I know I'll be watching and asking questions. Thanks again for all of the info.

Great, I was set on an fj cruiser as a dedicated off-road toy now I see this. I might still opt for an 09 4Runner or 15 taco off-road model, sigh.....cant make up my mind. Hell even an 08 land cruiser is priced pretty reasonable on some of my research but it’s too big for some trails.

My wife needed a break from the kids last weekend so I packed up the girls and went to our favorite spots in SW Nashville
FJ's are really cool, can't lose with either platform really. Especially with how much suspension interchanges between the different rigs.
