Here I am after having built my very own Special Grade National Match M1 Garand at the CMP's Advanced Maintenance Class. Man what a great experience that was. 3 days where you learn nothing but M1 stuffs, pull parts from bins and build your own M1 under the gentle tutelage of the very same smiths building those you can buy direct.



PS: I used this very rifle to earn my NRA High Power Expert card. Moved on after that to a rifle more suited for today's game, but I still drag this ole gal out for special occasions (matches). Shoots better and better every time.

That FN I just picked up; was on a deal! RMR Type 2 for $1030.
Well I also wanted a Scorpion - but accidently picked up a HK45CT that will be here Thursday.
So scorpion was axed - and a guy posted up last night he wanted to trade a Scorpion for a FNX45 - so I pulled off the RMR and traded straight across - essentially picking up a Scorpion for $700 LOL
So FN is gone, but now have this gal

It will be suppressed with a pistol brace shortly.

Very cool! I love my CMP-built Garand, but would love it even more if I could’ve built it myself.

 

It was awesome. Very worth going if you can find the time. I believe they're now hosting half a dozen classes a year.

This was one of the more emotional moments (if you're a fan of these rifles and their history, yes there are emotional moments at an event like this...) was during a break from the building portion of the class and while on a warehouse tour. The head historian was going thru a European theater crate that hadn't been opened in 70 years, and he'd just pulled this rifle and tagged it for auction sale as is


It had dirt all over it (not cosmo, but actual battlefield dirt) and what looked like bloodstains on the sling. Gave us all chills.

 

Wow! Yeah, just reading about that gives me chills. Can’t imagine the emotions while there in person.

I had seen the CMP classes being offered, but I thought I’d read where it was hard to get a spot given the many applicants. Would really like to do that, though, especially with my Dad or son if possible.

 

No doubt. The way he held it, with such care and reverence... and how his voice trembled when talking about it... man, it must be dusty in here...

When I went (2014) it was I think the first or second class ever offered. Waiting list was a few hundred deep. I just lucked out.

I have since read that they've increased the number of classes per year dramatically, to meet the demand. And I've also read that while there still might be a waiting list for each class, its only a few dozen and several of those get in with no trouble.

Honestly Ed, if this interests you at all, make it happen ESPECIALLY if you can do it with your son and Dad. Its something I wish I could have shared with my Dad, but he'd passed by then. It left such a mark on me... something I will never forget. I think your memories, shared with you and yours, would be even better.

 

Sorry for your loss, but thanks for the great advice. My Dad will be 80 this year. If he’s interested, I’ll have to make it happen.

FYI they were very accommodating for the older gentlemen in my class, a couple of which had trouble with their hands. At no point was any of us ever left alone; always had a smith or two by our side helping, suggesting, guiding, jumping in when needed etc. If you reach out to them, you may want to confirm but if my experience is any judge, and your Dad is concerned about such things, there's no reason to be.
