I’ve shot 10mm, but 10mm for hunting? Suppose you could do it, but you could also hunt with 40S&W, and 45ACP; but I wouldn’t recommend it in my neck of the woods! :)
It’s mainly used as a pistol round, so distance is limited vs say a .243 rifle.

Many rounds are powerful! :) And they all have their place in this world.

    To the poster in question:
I don’t know many who would pick a 10mm round out of a 4”-10.5” max barrel length for white tails at 50-200 yards vs a .243 cartridge running 16”-20” barrel length? There’s a ton of variables that come into play.
The first is the max distance in which you would engage a target. I see you are out of Chicago.
I’m in the PNW which I would like to think is some of the densest hunting forest in the US (definitely vs Chicago area). Could I hunt with a 10mm? Yep, all day long. Would I be as successful as a 16” .243-.308? Nope. Most likely not.
Not trying to argue, just trying to help since hunting with the wrong caliber would leave you with such a significant disadvantage. Hunting ain’t easy to begin with, and when you track an animal for hours, days, sometimes weeks - and then our weapon of choice doesn’t workout, it’s a gigantic deterrent to hunting.

I had one hunting year 3 years back where I pulled a multi-season tag, which allowed me to hunt Archery, Muzzle, and Modern Rifle. It was my first year hunting Muzzle and I had picked up a New Traditions Muzzle Loader (that was on recall and I didn’t know it) - it cost me a trophy 6x8 900+ lb lead bull Elk, and a nice 3x4 Blacktail buck. We spent days hunting that Elk heard, and it took a shit ton of luck and experience to setup that lead bull for a shot. I hung-up Muzzle from that day forward due to the weapon malfunctions (bad fire-control group from the factory - only on the musket cap models).
(Normally hunt Archery Elk, Rifle deer)

There’s nothing more I’d hate to see than someone attempting to hunt with a weapon that sets them up with such a significant disadvantage.

I would imagine the folks hunting with a 10mm pistol aren’t of the normal-joe hunting caliber. They’re you’re Jim Shockey type who is bored with dropping animals out of a rifle length barrel, and they are looking for much more of a challenge. They are invited to hunt on ranches blessed with gobs of animals - not us normal folk buying over-the-counter tags LOL.
If you’re the Jim Shockey type - congrats!
    Cheers:cheers:

I wouldn’t pick a 10mm to hunt with, but he did ask. I also wouldn’t pick a 10mm for self defense for the same reason.

For sure sir! I originally misread your post and revised my response, I apologize.
    I agree, 10mm is a powerful round!

I reload, and the pressures a 10mm produces has stopped me from purchasing a unit in that caliber. (I have quite a bit of 40S&W for sale as well) lol

    Cheers!

While I do agree with you, it's possible that a .243 or any full size rifle round might not be legal to hunt with where the OP lives. I'm in Indiana and we can only use rifles firing specific pistol cartridges on public land during deer season (shotguns w/
slugs are legal, as well as pistols with a barrel length of over 4"). Full size rifles are allowed on private land but that has only been legal for a year. I've never shot a 10mm but if I remember right, it's ballistics are similar to .44 mag.

Oh I took no offense. I agreed with your statement.

When it comes to harvesting an animal, I like choosing the most appropriate tool for the job.

I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting your state, so please excuse my ignorance on the topic. Is there a lot of dense forestry or is it more of a population issue concerning the use of only some cartridges?

It's more of a population issue. Indiana is pretty flat so a long-range weapon is not a great idea. We do have forests but also a lot of open corn fields. I was actually surprised they started allowing regular rifles on private land (there is no acreage limit).

I honestly never thought of a pistol-caliber limitation! If so, count me out of this conversation and I apologize!! LOL!

Lol. It sucks. I'd much rather use my .45-70 to hunt with but I don't have access to private land so I'm stuck using my slug gun or a pistol caliber rifle. I've been looking to pick up a .45LC rifle but just can't really justify it right now.

I bet! That does suck! There’s one hunting unit (we actually live within the unit on 13.5acres) in our state that is Archery/Muzzle/Shotgun slug only - no modern firearms. It’s due to the number of houses in the area.
Is your limitations due to not having hills/backdrop? Or is it the houses as well?
I’ve never in my life seen anyone in our area hunt with a handgun lol.
    :D

It's probably a mixture of both. We have hilly areas in the southern half of the state, but the northern half is flat. There are also a lot of hunters in the woods during deer season here so I think that plays a part of it as well.
