Can still find plenty of reasonably priced 9 and 22 But although it's not obviously drastic yet 556 seems to be creeping up there with out of stock tags popping up a bit faster than a month ago. Just Like as if other manufacturers are stepping up for one who's out and any more supply pressure might upset that.

Need advice! Debating getting a shotgun, in addition to handgun, for protection and fun of shooting for both my wife and myself. How much kick from a Mossberg 590A1 18 1/2" (heavy, but well-balanced...really liked the feel) with 12 gauge 2 3/4" shells 1 oz? We're older (late 50s), so not as durable as we used to be...would we be like, 'F*** practicing with that thing, kicks like a mule!'? We can't use minishells at our range, as has to be steel shot, and I'm not finding that anywhere.

20 gauge looks worse stupid expensive for ammo.

    Thanks!

If you are recoil sensitive, just buy a Mossberg 500 20ga. Get an 18" home defense version and you will be fine. My 81 year old mother still shoots clays occasionally with her 20ga Mossy. In a close quarters situation (ie- home defense) you aren't losing anything with a 20ga and good ammo.

You can always 'practice' manipulating the shotgun w/birdshot; it's certainly not going to kick as hard as 00 buck or slugs... just got to be aware of the difference in kick, etc. in a defensive situation between the birdshot and slugs or 00 buck!

Also, make sure you don't leave birdshot in it as defensive ammo

Why does no one talk about when the shot happens folks only think the worst. Snap shooters have no felt recoil. Why is that? I can't remember when I have ever felt the recoil field hunting. Seems that the fear of recoil is worse than the recoil.

I'd imagine lack of anticipation and a bit of adrenaline are working to the shooter's advantage in a hunting scenario. Most folks struggle w/having that mindset on a range though and really start to overthink and try to fight or avoid the weapon's energy.

Recoil should be absorbed through the body, and when the weapon is being held and stabilized properly, its 'impact' is minimal to the shooter; even with larger calibers.

    Good points

    Thanks for the discussion!

Appreciate the semiauto, but we're old-school, really wanting a pump. Part of it is the mindset of super-reliability and that racking should help in a situation, in our minds.

My first notion was a 20, but selection of ammo and pricing makes me lean 12 (and admittedly, how freaking cool this gun looks and feels), if we'd enjoy the practice...sounds like the concern may be worse than the reality? As long as we shoulder it and good stance, a heavy 12 gun with light load for most practice, some heavier to get the feel for what stays in it, and we should be good to go, is what I'm getting from you guys.

May talk to the shop about 'any way we can take this thing for a test drive'? I just don't want to wind up talking myself into this beautious bad ass shotgun, throw some money at it, then we hate shooting it!

We'll probably pull the trigger on it (haha...) tomorrow.

    Thanks again!

Reduced recoil rounds are available also. 00 and slug. when you buy, make sure the 18.5 security barrel is included. I’ve been looking for one for my mossberg and it’s out of stock everywhere.

12 gauge is no big deal. Sounds like someone has you thinking of something that is not even a thing. The two best shotguns I have ever owned was a Browning BPS 12 and a 16 gauge. I loved both of those guns and if I was ever to buy another shotgun it would be a 16 gauge, I killed all the pheasants, ducks, and geese with that shotgun than I can count!:) A 12 is no big deal and both guns have a huge variety of shot. Good luck.

Young children shoot 12 gauge shotguns but for a woman that has not shot much I would seriously consider the 16, but that is just me.

Short barrel is therePXL_20231019_211706587.jpg , we have a local gun shop that's pretty cool. They had several, but the best 20 gauge was a 590 20", so not my favorite. This 12 with 18 1/2 just felt *right*.

And, yeah, probably...I haven't been around a lot of shotguns (last one I shot was a 10 gauge when I was a teenager), so hearsay and (mis)conceptions is all I got!

So much for getting a heavier one to reduce recoil! We went to try the Mossberg for fit and feel, and they were uncomfortable to her, just too big. She saw this one, really liked it, still a pump, both like the feel. Who am I to say no to the missus? :D
Ordered thicker stock pad, cheek pad, and we're trying lighter birdshot at the range Monday. PXL_20231021_153157272.jpg

Is that it?? Where is the barrel? And y’all was worried about recoil?? Do not know what it’ll be used for but good luck. :)

I thinks y’all got a hold of a salesman that wanted to sell something.

a youth 20 gauge would have been perfect for one of an opposite sex (female). There are a handful of much better options than what was sold to y’all.

Yeah, I know...we probably let the cool factor get to us, but we spotted it and asked, can't put too much on him. But, they had a youth 20 gauge we tried (I had spotted it Thursday) and it was too small for her. She had to scrunch up to shoulder it. And I could barely hold it...felt like a Daisy Red Ryder...I'd shoot my eye out! I'm hoping light recoil ammo and the extra padding, as well as it being the right fit for a good hold/stance, lets us both enjoy the Keltec for practice. And hopefully never NEED it.

It's probably an 18.5" barrel; which is typical for bull pup style shotguns. I've never shot one, but numerous manufacturers have them out now.

If she's comfortable holding and manipulating it, that's a good start

I was being smart I am well aware of what that gun is. Definitely not a gun I would get my wife for home protection especially if she has not been around shotguns!
To each their own. Wish em all the best.

practice practice practice and then practice some more.

Appreciate it...as you say, practice! That's what got me looking, we'd discussed adding a shotgun before, and hadn't practiced with our handgun enough, and once we started looking again and found a good local resource for that, my little kid brain turned it into 'know what'd be more fun than us shooting a gun?...shooting TWO guns!'
I'll give you guys a status report Monday night.

What brand did you guys end up going with??

So, if I'm telling you something you already know, please forgive me; just wanted to offer up some basics to practice and have in mind before you hit the range.... **** If you're going to be handling the firearm outside of the range always make sure the weapon is completely downloaded (per mfr recommendations) and that you have NO live ammo in the same room ****

You already spoke about proper mounting to the should and getting a good cheek weld, so I though I'd throw out stance (your base).

When a lot of folks think about stance and long guns they end up with something that is more perpendicular than it should be. IE>>> Feet are going one direction, hips and centerline of your body is going another, and the weapon is just point toward the target (may or may not be in line w/the feet, hips and center line of the shooter).

Start at the bottom and work up; feet should both be facing forward (generally the dominant side is slightly rearward of the non-dominant) and toward the target (think of a good fighting stance); knees slightly bent; hips square w/the target; slight bend forward at the waist; your centerline and shoulders square with the target; your weight should be on the balls of your feet leaning somewhat forward and into your target. This position should be a bit uncomfortable to your lower back unless you have exceptional core strength.

Also, some folks will elevate their elbows when handling long guns (elbows out from their sides and perpendicular to the ground), but they pulled down and 'locked' into a comfortable position closer to the shooter's sides; the closer your elbows are to your body the stronger and more in control of the weapon you'll be.

Finally, head position... think 'head up, eyes up, gun up'; once you're in a good stance w/your body squared up and your head in a natural position facing forward, mount the weapon to the shoulder and cheek by bringing the weapon into position (and not by tilting your head down to the side to acquire a sight picture). Your neck should remain erect and forward along w/your head while in position to shoot.

You'll know if you're in a good position when you're on the range because your lower back will be slightly uncomfortable, and you'll feel yourself leaning somewhat forward w/o falling over or losing balance. Recoil should come straight back (through your upper body and not lift the muzzle up); if the muzzle is jumping up, you're not 'locked in' enough. Bend knees a bit more, make sure toes are facing forward, hips square, upper body leaning into the shot, and elbows tucking tight into your sides w/the contact points of the weapons firmly in place against your hands, shoulder and cheek.

Since you're thinking of this as a self defense weapon, keep in mind movement in a defensive situation... Aside from better control of the firearm, being squared up w/your target and having your feet and such in a proper fighting position allows you the option to move more naturally and freely than a more 'traditional' weaver style shooting stance (last photo). You'll be able to move forward or back, laterally, and even turn or move in circular movements and such much more naturally. You'll also have much better balance and be less likely to trip over something and send a round in an unintended direction.

Lastly, in keeping with the idea of a weapon suited for home defense; once you are both comfortable with the weapon and have the basics down you'll want to make sure being on target and target identification in no-light or low-light conditions is realistic. I'd try to minimize adding weight to the weapon especially since your wife may be handling it, but you may want to consider adding a light source for illumination and possible a red dot or laser for fast target acquisition. One benefit of the design you went w/is that accessories can be added fairly easy; just keep any additions to a bare minimum and only out of necessity
Sorry for rambling on so much; my fingers got to typing out my verbal vomit :anonymous:

    Have fun and safe shooting!!!!
