The engine and trans and body are good to go. Time to make it an off road only type vehicle. It’s ready for a cage LOL.

The correct way to camp in bear country is to not attract bears.

Not allowed to carry a handgun up here in the unfree North without a permit that will virtually never be issued.

I pack a short barrelled 12ga pump loaded with Federal Deep Penetrator or Brennekke slugs

Basically more like never ever allowed to carry....ever.
12 gauge would be the way to go. Though I can honestly say Ive never ran into a bear in my camp. Though they have come through very close by. Keep everything in the truck and park that away from the tents.

When I was fishing on the Russian River in Kenai we had to make way for a Grizzly sow and cubs. Bears all over the freaking place when salmon run. Actually worse before first salmon run. Bears are super hungry then. Bear spray is a given and a side arm. In AK..no handgun permit needed anywhere. The way it should be. You Canadians need to come up with something similar to our 2nd Amendment. I didn't realize your firearm laws were so restrictive. It is what it is. you would think in some of the "great northern" provinces the laws would be less restrictive where you are not atop of the food chain....:canada:

Its not so bad. We could get into it but thats a whole other ball of wax.
Basically you are NOT the top of the food chain when youre back country. Its a good rule to follow when you are in someone or something elses backyard.

Yeah, those slugs will damn near flip a black bear back on his ass. They'll break a grizzly down too. The ballistic gel tests I've seen on them are startling with how much penetration both Deep Penetrators and Brennekes carry. The kinetic energy is staggering.

As for Fairbanks...If I could make it happen I'd move to the US tomorrow. Alaska, Montana, Wyoming and Texas all look really good and those are just the onese I've glanced at.

Pretty well. Policy is "non-issue". Canadians can apply for a Wilderness Authorization to Carry, but there's very strict guidelines to meet, certain calibers you can carry *if* the permit is granted and a bunch of other nonesense. Even if all the criteria is met, 99% of the permits will be denied on principle. Forget about carry for self defence anywhere else...

I've had around half a dozen run ins with bears. Mostly black bears but also 2 grizz. I grew up in BC though and I spend most of my time now in the remote areas around Tumbler Ridge and north-eastern BC as well as fishing the salmon rivers along the west coast. Loads and loads of bears around there compared to Alberta. Only had to shoot once though and when the slug kicked dirt in the black bear's face he turned tail pretty quick.

Being bear aware does become second nature though and not enough people konw the first thing about it.

Hunting rifles aren't restricted are they? I know hunting up in your neck of the woods is just as popular there as it is here. I was allowed to bring my hunting rifles with me when I drove up thru Canada to AK. The Canadian customs took note of all serial numbers. Verified rifles and one shotgun were properly stored. I figured that it would be best to just get ammo once in Anchorage. They looked everything over pretty much twice. Asked if I had any hand guns a few times and if I was aware of the serious penalties of not reporting them. Fun times..Side bar........A friends brother while on a hike in the Chugach Mts out of Anchorage accidentally sprayed himself in the face with bear repellent. He triggered the canister somehow while going over a barbed wire fence. He was overdue to return home by several hours so they sent up a chopper and was able to spot him. Apparently he was sort of blinded temporarily from the direct hit in the eyes ( and mouth..heh..heh)and he decided to just sit and wait. We joked later that grizzlies were probably all around him checking out what the dumb human was doing just sitting there....hoo....wee...

Locking your car doors has little effect on a determined grizzly bear. They usually carry a slim jim.

No, hunting rifles aren't restricted. The gun laws here are convoluted and based on emotion rather than fact for the most part (aren't all gun laws...). For example, the AR15 is restricted but the Tavor is not. The semi auto AK47 is prohibited, the CZ-858 is unrestricted (for now, there's a can of worms with that one about to explode though).

The Canadian government is weird about handguns, hence why you were asked constantly about it. I can wander around with a bolt action .50BMG on the back seat of my truck and the loaded magazine in my lap, but God help me if I get caught bringing my handgun to the range without it unloaded, trigger locked and in an opaque locked case and a piece of paper that was issued with the purchase of the gun saying I'm allowed to take it to the range.

There's a few things that are advantageous for us that I believe Americans have a harder time with. Short barrelled shotguns for one. IIRC, you guys have limits on those? As long as a shotgun is 26.5" in overall length and is manual operated (break, pump etc) it's non-restricted. One of my fishing partners carries a Dominion Arms Grizzly with a 8.5" barrel. With a standard stock, the gun measures 26.5" or 27" on the nose. Chinese commie guns are popular and cheap here too. Chinese SKS rifles can be had for under $300.

But yeah...our gun laws are dumb as hell and draconian. I haven't even scraped the surface in this post with how strange they are. I'd trade our laws for even the Californian gun laws in a heartbeat.

California gun laws are kinda of messed up. Convoluted as you say. Worse than you think.... One thing for sure bears do not like loud noises especially if it's coming from a bad ass shotgun. Bears can get pretty nosy at times and they seem to be attracted to vehicles with the windows down. Never a happy ending there. Hahahah>>[IMG] Whoa!!!>>>upload_2018-4-21_7-8-47.jpg

Yeah, gotta keep those windows up! LOL. We camp in a tent and make sure the food is locked in the truck cab overnight and the tent is pitched a healthy distance from the truck and cookng areas. Oh, and the trusty shotgun is laying right beside me too.

Mountain lions creep me out. I love them and they're beautiful animals, only seen a couple in the wild but they're sneaky sonsabitches. Thankfully they're rare and shy enough I'm not overly concerned about them. There's been a few attacks in BC over the years though.

This is excellent bear/cougar medicine. :)
