Welcome from the westside of Phoenix. (Peoria). Beautiful truck. My only advise is to check the maintenance records to see if the timing belt has ever been changed. The 4.7L has a timing belt not a chain like most of the other Tundras. Hopefully it has been done, if not, you may want to consider that soon.

The previous owner had it changed at 56K miles!

He also left the service record book in the glove compartment: he recorded every service, all the details, got stamps and everything. I thought I was meticulous when it came to keeping records, but this guy has me beat. It's one of the things that makes me feel slightly better about spending more than I intended on a in-better-condition-than-I-planned vehicle.

My in-laws have been in town for the past week, so I haven't done much about the truck, but I have been cruising craigslist looking for a shell, and my take-away from that is that there aren't many shells, or anything, for sale for 1st gen Tundras. I've widened the search as far as Las Vegas and LA. :-( If I have to buy a new shell, it's going to set me back two month's pay. Anyone have ideas where else to look?

If you want to, start a build thread. And I saw a shell in Flagstaff on CL.

I found an ARE shell off an '02 in Tucson for $350. It's not exactly what I want (mid-rise, win-doors) but it is available and, as far as I know, not crazy expensive. (Correct me if I'm wrong on that.) All I know so far is that it comes with a key and has sliding windows on the side and front.

One question for the group: the seller says it once had screens in the windows, but currently does not. Aside from a DIY job, about how much would it cost to replace the screens as it would have come from the factory?

Or can a DIY job fit in as well as the original? What I'm getting at is I don't really want a piece of screen that I velcroed in place flapping around and giant gaps for mosquitoes to get in and such, if I can avoid it.

And is it dumb to get something that isn't exactly what I want? I figure if I pay $350 now, then I have a shell to tide me over, then when I find the ideal shell I can sell this one (on the seashore) for probably the $350 I paid...right?
