Unless you need to tow over 5k but under 9k and have 3 row seating. Or do mild to moderate off road stuff and need 3 rows. This all new release just destroyed the reason to buy a new Sequoia.

I still like the Sequoia better. Not that I'd get either one, but if I had to choose, Seq.

This is exactly what my wife wants!
She has a 14 Highlander now and loves it, but it doesn't have everything she wants. This has that everything WITHOUT it being a giant Sequoia. We test drove the Sequoia twice and she still likes the Highlander more because of the overall size. This checks all the boxes.

More cargo space, fold flat rear, and 362 hp and 400 TQ. Yeah this thing is going to sell.
    That color is awesome too

It is more brutish for sure, but I'd wager that 90% of Sequoia owners never use it outside of what this Grand Hylander is capable of.

I also think that a buyer focuses on the unique features that you only find in a 3rd row SUV. Comparing the execution of those features between these two, the Sequoia loses miserably IMO.

Incase you couldn't tell, I'm very disappointed with the Sequoia :smash:

That GH looks legit. Much better looking than the normal Highlander.

Once the new 4Runner comes out, I don’t see the Sequoia lasting very long if they don’t fix the 3rd row and cargo situation.

It's probably too early to know now, but they could offer the fold down third row as an available option which would be even more of a stake in the Sequoia's heart.

Have that third row on our 4runner and it's super convenient - wouldn't want to do a long road trip with it, but it can safely get 7 people for a trip across town.

I watched a few videos about the new Grand Highlander last night...I had the same thoughts. Toyota nailed it with this one, this is going to sell like hot cakes. We have 2nd gen Sequoia and Lexus RX350 (similar to Highlander) now. I love the new Sequoia but I think we will consider the new Grand Highlander in a couple years.

I am a little embarrassed to say that the GH looks good. At first glance it looks like it will my family needs better than the Sequoia. I wish the 2023 Sequoia had better cargo space. Seems like I have some research to do on the GH.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Toyota has clearly demonstrated where they make their money, and this Grand Highlander showcases that. Look at the features content, thought, and R&D $$$ spent on this versus the Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota makes big money on Highlanders and RAV4 sales, so that is where the $$$ and engineering talent is focused. The Highlander and RAV4 are always uniformly excellent within their respective segments.

The new Tundra and Sequoia are clearly side projects to appease a segment of the North American market that Toyota doesn’t really care about. The team responsible for Tundra and Sequoia clearly had to work within the confines of left over budget from the Land Cruiser 300 development program that is important to Toyota everywhere but North America. From international reviews I have read the new LC 300 is well received, clearly having tremendous effort and funding put into it. Tundra and Sequoia? They both get shit ratings, from reviewers that also evaluate the competition in the segments they compete in.

I have no doubt that the new Tacoma will be excellent because the HiLux is very important to Toyota everywhere in the world and the two will share a lot of engineering.

I hope Toyota gives us the new Land Cruiser to buy at some point because it will probably be excellent in US spec. Same for the Land Cruiser Prado.

I worry about the next 4Runner because it’s really only a North American market favorite. My guess is the next one will be either awesome, or pathetic and sad with nothing in between. Since Toyota takes forever to release new products and R&D probably started and the vehicle was finalized before the Ford Bronco and off road capable SUV craze kicked off, my guess is the 4Runner is going to be pathetic and sad…. or delayed 3 more years while Toyota redesigns the whole project.

I kind of don’t care about the 4Runner. Just give us the LC Prado with the V35A-FTS in full Tundra state of tune with a 25 gallon fuel tank, 10 speed, and full time 4 Wheel Drive Torsen transfer case with low range. Offer several trims with the top spec TRD or GR Off-road coming in at the high $50’s low $60’s and I’m putting a deposit down on one.

Please don't have more payload than a Tundra. Please don't have more payload than a Tundra.

And Ford must be rushing to build an Explorer XL right about now...

I hope you're right, but I doubt it's south of 50k (for anything but a zilch-appointed base model).

Totally agree on the Prado, as I just cant bring myself to want a GX without having to mod the heck out of it.

I also do have high hopes for the 4R simply from the standpoint that they appear to be going back to having the 4R be a bit closer to the Tacoma. With how competitive the new Maverick, new redesigned Ranger, and new redesigned GM twins (that new Canyon looks AWESOME) are, it is imperative that the new redesigned Tacoma is a home run. Toyota cannot afford to lose market share in a big money making market for them.

I guess I'm not buying a GX or nextgen 4R for the wife. I'm liking this GH a lot.

Yeah I think the street based on the reg Hylander price expects a 46k-50k entry point.

My wife starting commuting again this week for the first time in five years. I'm pretty sure she trades her 2018 4Runner in for one of these with the Hybrid Max.

All they have to do is make it non-hybrid and either make the 3rd row optional or fold flat. It really can't be that hard but they went hybrid only and screwed themselves.

I just hope, if they do give us a Land Cruiser, that its not a luxo barge. If they came out with one that was an SR or SR5 and reasonably affordable I think it will do well. It doesnt need to be $100k.

And agree. The 4Runner is not interesting in its current form and unless they really step up with the next gen it will continue to not be.

I have to say the grand highlander might be my next purchase as long as the price is not crazy expensive. I like that the second and third row fold down flat. The biggest thing I am interested in will be front leg room, since I am 6’5” tall. Really don’t need a sequoia since I have a tundra.

Agree with most of your sentiments here, but find that last sentence unlikely. Methinks that the Prado, almost assuredly the LC replacement, will be low 70's to start. I'd buy one in the 50's as well, but that isn't happening.

If Toyota prices the LC Prado in the low $70K range it will suffer the exact same fate as the last Land Cruiser. No one will buy one.

However I never underestimate Toyota’s ability to fuck things up when it comes to product offerings these days. They’ve lost their way just like BMW did in the early 2000’s.

Low 70’s would be 12k more than a GX is currently priced. Are they canning the GX? Or is the GX gunna start at 90k?

That kind of pricing strategy would be exceedingly stupid.

So we can count on there being a 95% probability that Toyota/Lexus do exactly that.

Plus the LC Prado and GX will both be gutless turds with a lame and thrashy I4 turbo hybrid that will make owners want to beat children.

Shouldn’t be too difficult since the LX600 doesn’t come with a hybrid, and it’s 2nd and 3rd row fold flat like basically the rest of the industry.

LC Prado or redesigned 4R would fill a decent gap in Toyotas line up. I loved everything about my wife’s old 2020 Pro 4R, except it’s brutal motor and transmission. If it had the 4.6L V8 / 6-speed combo of the GX, then I would have kept it forever.

Over here still waiting on an extended wheel base Sequoia.
Too many kids and lots of sports. We fill up all 3 rows and all the cargo space on weekends in the Suburban. Month long summer vacations add a 2nd Suburban and a roof top carrier on our trips.
Would love to be able to dump this Suburban.

Wife had a Highlander before the Suburban and it was great just far too small. This will likely be a very big hit.

Sequoia is more of a large family overlander. I only wish there's more cargo space. Even within the same wheel base, the second row space is absurd. Third row is bigger than the second row in my mid-size Volvo wagon! But that leaves the cargo space good maybe for two six-packs.

Also, a four cylinder turbo hybrid pulling like 5.7l V8, what can go wrong? It's like a 10 years old filled up with Monster Energy and doing squats with 200 lbs on his shoulders.

If this is reliable, reasonably priced and still around in 15 years, maybe we'll get one to replace the wife's Pilot.
