And as an added quip, I was talking to my wife this morning on our commute into the city (we're fortunate enough to work at the same time and near one another, so we get to share a commute), about this conversation and how I thought it could not be true that a Comcast technician has only heard of 1 person ever going over their 1tb bandwidth cap. My wife mentioned to me that she was approached by a Comcast salesperson and when asked why we no longer had Comcast she mentioned poor performance and the data cap - the salesman told her, literally, "Yeah, the data cap sucks. It is definitely our number one complaint."

If @Areith762 has only heard of one person going over in 9 years it's because he's a technician and not a sales or customer support person. He's there to resolve technical problems and complete installs, not deal with billing issues. Data cap is a billing issue. According to Comcast, 99% of their customers do not reach this usage, (which I feel is not an accurate number but we'll use it). Based on this, assuming that a Comcast technician does 3-5 service calls a day (installs and troubleshooting), he or she would encounter at least 1 customer who exceeded the data cap every 20-33 days. There are 252 working days in a year, which means if we take the most conservative estimate, the technician would encounter 7.63 high data users a year. This would be almost 69 high data users over a 10 year period.

Granted, the data cap is a fairly new phenomenon with Comcast, but hopefully this demonstrates the point.

So Comcast forces you in to a contract in order to get a better price, and you still pay X (this is the discounted price) for 250/15mpbs service, but you only actually get about 30% of that speed during peak usage. Further, if you want to jump ship you have to pay an early disconnect fee. At the end of your 12 months your price automatically goes up unless you call and haggle and get back on another contract.

Meanwhile Fiber Provider ABC offers 1gb up and down, for half the cost, with dedicated service (not distributed like Comcast - with Comcast you share with your neighbors), and they guarantee your speeds to within 10% of your service plan (You pay for 1tb you get at least 900mbps). There is no contract to buy out of, and your pricing is guaranteed for life if you never terminate your service.

What person would stay with option 1? Why would anyone pay MORE for LESS? It doesn't make sense to me. You can be the best and nicest car salesman on the planet, that doesn't mean I'm going to pay $5000 more for your car when the dealship down the street is also pretty friendly, and has a nicer, newer model for less money.

I was happy to give my opinion of Comcast the @geno0506 and be on my way... When the facts I present are questioned I will gladly provide supporting evidence.

AC1900 or better, brand isn't a huge deal as they all must be IEEE 802.11 certified. If the router has the WiFi Certified logo it meets this certification. Netgear, Linksys, and Asus are both great brands, but you can get a TP-Link, D-Link, or Tenda that will perform the same for less. I have a Linksys AC1900 and it's fantastic. If you don't want to spend $150 look @ the D-Link DIR-879, or the Tenda AC-15. I use the Tenda for another application and it's pretty damn great.

I would place the router in the most centralized, open area that is convenient for you. With this router and fiber you will be 100% fine running your desktop off the WiFi. If your desktop isn't already equipped get a PCI WiFi card that is good up to gigabit internet. This is a really good option that will be just as fast as a wired connection over shortish distances:

Thats $400 a year savings or ~10 fill ups while offering the same or better speed. I would not wait for it and just do it

    @geno0506

I'm not a pro either. My KDR is terrible.. But I like to play for fun with friends and strategize. I was way better at BF2 back in the day! I don't play a lot either, in fact I only recently started installing games again. I didn't want to download them because, and this is serious and not a jab, the data cap with Comcast kept me from downloading any games.

Kind of funny because I just mentioned it. Intermittent issues at this home. Impulse noise from a grow house with poor shielded cable is the cause. 20180409_075808.jpg

I'm sorry, you said "1 customer this year."

You're surprised I lasted 4 years? I left on my own accord. I now make 2x more money than I did there. My work ethic is great, my quality of work the same.

Just because I'm a realist and not a Comcast cheerleader doesn't mean I'm not an excellent employee asset.

There's no need for personal insults, we should just be discussing the facts. I'm surprised we're sinking to the level of personal insults at this point... Clearly this is getting you angry, I'll stop replying. Sorry for misquoting you, I was mixing up two of your earlier claims.

Its all good. I apologize as well. Glad you have good internet and you are happy with it. I am installing a direct fiber line to a home in about a hour, not fiber deep. I agree their are some old degraded networks but the whole thing is getting replaced at over 100+ addresses a day.

Slightly off topic (doesn't really matter because this turned into a pissing contest a while back)

Thoughts on google wifi, or mesh network in general?
My parents have an older large 2 story house and they had their modem/router on the back side of the house. The signal was terrible at the other side and non-existent upstairs. I grabbed a 3pk of the google wifi hokey pucks and set them up. They dont stream a lot, just mainly surf the net, emails and youtube. Seems to be working well for them.
I'm currently running a asus rt-ac5300 but if it ever crapps out, i'm wondering how mesh networks work with heavy internet users.

Don't even run wires - that AC1900 will be blazing fast in that situation. Just try to set it up centrally.

Mesh networks are great, but maybe a bit of overkill in the situation you describe. If you've ever been on a large medical campus, in an airport, or at a school you are most certainly connected to a mesh network. You can easily set up the same functionality in your home or work place with a little bit of homework.

I have not set up this type of network since my CWNA, the final project was setting up a mesh network in the dungeon below the science and technology building. It included a site survey, equipment recommendation (was easy because we only had access to a few things), and implementation. It would be very easy to set up in a smaller space.

    OK,

so I'm good at knowing what wireless to use other then the GF wireless pucks!

Lastly, do I run my own wireless router off GF's base modem they install their outside fiber coming in to house or should I buy my own modem?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Sorry if I started a shit storm here!
