    That's exactly what I mentioned...

I'm sorry, but I dont believe that statement at all. Maybe Comcast is better in that market. Its terrible here. I was not an install technician, I worked in infra.

I thought I would never get Century Link, but dedicated 1gb fiber for less $ than 250mbps Comcast sold me. I can streak 10 4k movies at once and I dont have to fight those idiots when my plan doubles in price every 12 months.

No, go read the post again. I said clearly that I was not given an option to relive the data cap other than going to business class... which was $400.

It's up there for you to review. I'd put my check on it.

So I had to come down to my desktop, which is connected directly to my Century Link fiber modem, just like it was connected directly to my Netgear CM1000 modem back when I lived in the dark ages and had Comcast.

With Comcast (advertised 250 down, 15 up)
    11.1.17.jpg 11.4.17.jpg

This was in November, the last tests I took before getting rid of Comcast (took awhile for fiber to arrive or I would have never gotten it in the first place). This plan was $90 a month.

I really do have a folder called PROOF THAT COMCAST SUCKS, by the way. And as you can see it was last modified in November 2017. It's full of screenshots of Comcrap underperforming.

    upload_2018-4-8_23-42-52.jpg

Here is a Centurylink speedtest, same computer, same router, same everything.. Taken 2 minutes ago. Keep in mind I'm streaming an episode of Better Call Saul in 4k, and syncing 14tb of Google drive to a new work laptop over the WiFi, usually it tests in the 900mbps range.

    upload_2018-4-8_23-46-4.jpg

I'm not trying to bash you or attack you in any way. I'm simply giving my experience both as a former employee of, and long-time customer of Comcast. I understand as an install tech you are trained to think that the customer is an idiot and their router is causing the problem. I assure you I have had multiple Comcast technicians at my residence and none have been able to resolve the problem - many have been baffled. My signal is strong across all bands. The problem is the service is shared with my neighbors, as is all Comcast service. It looks great at 10AM when a technician is here for a service call, but it looks terrible again at 5pm when the whole neighborhood is home watching Netflix. This is why you aren't seeing how terrible Comcast can truly be.

I'm sorry if my opinions and experience differ from your own, but they're not stated maliciously or with the intent of pissing anyone off or offending anyone. They are truthful statements that I can back up with factual data.

Fiber/coax hybrid here, but that is beside the point.. We're not talking about what Comcast might eventually introduce, we're talking about what they claim to deliver versus what actually makes it to my house.

I thought I unwatched this. Lol. I am not trained the customer is an idiot. Customer service is really important to me. I am trained to identify the issue, fix the issue, verify the issue has been fixed, and of course customer education is important as well. If there is a node issue where something occurs at specific times, usually that is SNR issues on the node. Back fed noise from somewhere. Fiber deep should help eliminate that or at a minimum help identify the root cause. SNR issues have become more of a issue in CO which I believe in part is due to the legalization of recreational marijuana. HE/HO lighting growers use add a ton of impulse noise to the network. I come across (mostly illegal) grow houses every other week. If they do not give me access to correct noise issues back feeding from their home, they either get trapped or disconnected.

If noise is the issue, and it's not originating from my residence, its irrelevant. Comcast claims I get x, I should get x. Not my fault the neighbors are stoners.

Most of the technicians that came to my house seemed clueless. You don't.

I must admit I loved when they claimed what you did, however, that speeds would be fine if they hooked up their laptop directly to my modem.. and then they get 25% of my advertised speeds too. None were able to fix it. Some admitted the network was congested and peak times would suffer.

Well having met you and how you treated a few of the locals on this board, I do believe you feel this way and live it (customer service/tech knowledge). I'm not going to lie, I was hoping to stay with Comcast. I have had nothing but great service from them.

I don't need anything more than I have now though. We don't even have a gaming console in our house, no cable TV, and to be honest....I do miss it, but don't miss the times I would rather spend with my family.

    Mike,

I just checked and my ASUS "not URANUS" @ColoradoTJ is the older RT-N66R, not the 1900!

So I defiantly need to upgrade it being It's not a GB one, what would you recommend in a ASUS upgrade - 1900 or higher?

Also whats the best/ideal place for GF to install their main modem in a house, my current TW modem is set in our bedroom where my PC is, wondering if its better to set it in the living room and run a ethernet cable to bedroom for gaming!

    Thanks

Then maybe it is a rare network capacity issue. If that was the case, system design needs to go back to Network construction and engineering for a re-design. If it is a SNR issue, the source needs to be identified and fixed or eliminated. And I agree 100% that it is not your fault. The population in my area exploded over the years. To accommodate the growth, fiber is being ran so we can avoid capacity issues as more and more homes pop up. It's a big project. I get daily emails on cut over locations and I am impressed on how much gets accomplished daily. In fact, we just cut over ToyTec to fiber deep Tuesday morning. Big money was spent on the overhaul. Probably a good reason why there is no other decent competition. It is expensive to run a new network. If we see poor SNR/MER issues in fiber deep, we can now pretty easily isolate the issue.
I had a problem hfc node a week ago with intermittent SNR/MER issues. I escalated the issue to Network maintenance. Of course they report back that there was no issue. I monitered the node (their job) for a couple more days after they reported back no issues. I was even monitering till 1-2 am. I went back on my own time a couple days later when I noticed the node was messing up again and got the network manager involved. That turned out to be back fed voltage due to a bad neutral from the power co that was causing the issue. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. If you truly were not getting your advertised speeds then that is very unfortunate that the techs in your area could not fix the issue. That would be something that needs to be escalated to the right individuals who can repair the issue which will then be a good learning opportunity for the previous techs on what they did wrong.

LOL I fought cable one for 19 years, yes 19 years about the crappy service at my house.

One of the service techs told me it was my equipment and gave me attitude I told him to leave, do not come back, filed a complaint.

Another tech told me to make a log book of each time I lost service, record the day time and temp and get back to them in 3 months. I canceled my phone service that day with them.

On and on, internet would always drop out from minutes to days at time, tv reception was spotty as well towards the end.

I kept telling them your main line is bad,

Finally after myself and everyone on the road said fix the issue or we leave, they ran a main line up to the nearest pole, about 50ft from my house, then put the drops there for each house. Turns out our drops were on a main 450ft away, and they wonder why we had crappy service.

I still do not have the tv service anymore, don't really mis it and my bill dropped by $125 a month, now its only $66 a month and service is much more reliable, but I still hate cableone as a company.

They are losing a ton of business here in my area due to the prices and crappy way you are treated.

Wow, 450' you will have a major attenuation issue. I am not familier with cable one, but if they are using a similar frequency range allocated by the FCC, you can expect up to 25Db in signal loss. Sure you can amplify or boost that signal, but you will be raising the noise floor with it.

I turned it off. Too late to start watching that now. I gotta get up for work in 4 hours.
Now look at that upload!!! Lol. I admit that's lame. Just think, 5 years ago 12 Mbps was considered fast download.

Unless you want half of your WiFi network outside, install your router in a middle level, centralized in your home. Cat5 to bedroom. Or even power line adapter. Asus makes good products, but those netgear nighthawks are very impressive.

sorry for dumb question but what is power line adapter, I’m assuming I wouldn’t have to make holes and run cat5, is the adapter any lesser then cat5!

Thanks for all the help and really appreciate it!

I can assure you he is far from clueless (as you mentioned here) We’ve had Comcast (Xfinity, whatever lol) for many years. I met @Areith762 a few months ago in person and had him do all of my installs. I had a couple of minor WiFi issues and when I sent him a text, he was at my front door the same day and corrected it the right way, all while explaining additional options to save money if I’d like.
He was so great, I sent him to my CEO who has nine (9) televisions in his house, (theatre rooms, game rooms, etc) after he got jerked around from Comcast corporate.
My neighbor across the street had some odd (but simple fix) issue her mother had caused. @Areith762 replied to my text with a novel in about 30 seconds. Because of Anthony, I will never leave Comcast. That kind of service is hard to come by these days. Hell, I even sent him to #MIKE (ps- @Areith762 he’ll be texting you this week for a very simple project)

Hard wire connection using your existing home electrical wiring. No need to drill holes to run CAT5. A straight hard wired CAT5 or 6 connection would always be best, but from my experience power lines work pretty darn good as well. They can be subject to interference, but from what I have seen with good brand power lines, they have very little if any speed loss.

I disagree. Wifi routers are an omnidirectional signal me
It would be silly not to leave Comcast when another company pops up, offers stable higher speeds at a lower price on a better network. But that is your prerogative.

I assure you I'm not clueless either. I worked as an infrastructure/network technician for Comcast for 4 years while earning my degree in CSIS and network administration. I think I've pretty clearly been able to demonstrate here that Comcast is an aging network infrastructure that can rarely offer the speeds they claim in peak hours because of the nature of their distributed service network model, and the fact that they literally exist because they bought up all of the old cable providers in the west and used their ancient, non-codified networks as their backbone.

I'm not talking about WiFi issues, which should be easy for a home user to troubleshoot and resolve. I'm talking about a poor network in general.

"Fiber deep" is a funny term. It basically means they will try to get fiber as "deep" in the system, or as close to the customer as possible. This will eventually happen, some time in the future.. Meanwhile, the ISPs that are serious are delivering fiber as deep as it can possibly go - right to my door step.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you want to pay more for a sub par product at an inflated cost, by all means. Enjoy that data cap and network traffic redirecting!

ASUS has always been my go to - not just for consumer level networking devices but for serious computer hardware and server products. They are legit.

That being said any 1900AC router meets the same IEEE 802.11 standard. You can get a Tenda for half the cost that will perform the same. Get what you want, be sure to get at a minimum an AC1900 router.

I partially agree that the router should be on the central level. WiFi routers create an omnidirectional signal that stretches outward and upward. If you have an open floor plan, and you have WiFi devices on the basement level, you will get a better signal on your top level with the router in the basement, than you will on the basement level with the router on the floor level. This is pretty basic CWNA 101.

If you don't have any WiFi devices on your basement level, or you don't have a basement level, put it on the ground level.
