I use a 270 SM for white tails down here.

Never having had the opportunity, I personally would choose something along the lines of a .300WBY MAG. It seems however the Brennecke has enough knockdown power and the Fish and Game folks seem to use them a good bit, which is why I asked.

Those Brennecke are the real deal to scare off..another thing to kill and you better have a safe place to run to.... Weatherbys used to be great. Handmade for years in South Gate , California not too far from Dick Cepeks' original store...Still not bad..The Mark V is made in MN, the rest...Vanguards are made by J A PAN Co.....Always were a niche rifle/caliber.... good ones....Not economical back in the day and not now.

Man this thread really blew up while I was at work!! Thank you all for the great replies!!

Being in NM there will be no moose or big ass bear hunting with it, we have small black bears and elk is the largest big game animal. Mule deer are popular and white tail are few and far between. Because if the diversity of NM I could be hunting thick national Forest land or wife open desert just depends on the unit I draw.

Honestly .270 has been on my mind because if I wanna go out weekend coyote hunting I can, if I draw for a bull elk tag I can, etc. All of your opinions are great and now I need to look up .308 and 30.06 selections.

Ask yourself this, if you got shot in the chest at 400 yards with a .270 or a .30-06 would it make any difference?

I have a 270WSM, 308 and 30-06 among others. If I had to choose 1 of these 3 it would be the 06. There are so many factory loads available you can choose your load for what your hunting without hand loading. However going between different bullet weights will cause some scope adjustment, but you know that

The 6.5 Creedmoor is getting s lot of cred lately and more rifles are coming out chambered in 6.5. Fast and flat...

My boss is a big fan of long range precision shooting had he bought a Savage in 6.5 Creedmoor and loves it. He's had everthing from 308 to 338 Lapua and claims the 6.5 is his favorite caliber.

Great round. Slightly pricier, and availability an issue. Every hunting cabin probably has an extra box of 30.06 or .308 in a closet somewhere. Same goes for the hardware store in the last town 20 mi from your hunt.

Internet has changed things, but reliability/availability have their perks.

This thread is great because there is no simple answer. So many different calibers out there to chose from. As you can see many of us that responded here have more than one rifle. I'd like to get a decent 338 Lapua at some point. It's all fun and opinionated. Back in high school decades ago a good friend of mine bought a Savage lever chambered in .308. I loved to shoot that Savage.

I have been looking at getting myself a rifle for hunting here in Texas. I am leaning towards a .270 as well. I feel that it will take anything that I decide to hunt for here in Texas. I think that NM would be the same. Would a 30.06 or .308 be better or just the same, maybe. They are all great rounds. I just feel that the .270 would be a better choice for me.

"Weatherbys used to be great." So what changed and made them less than great?

I find it extremely difficult to believe that a bear hit with the Brennecke Black Magic would simply be scared off by a 600 grain slug with over 3,000ft/lbs of energy.

Any of those would be a good choice. One is not necessarily "better" over another.

Simple...Weatherbys used to be totally handmade. I'd like to think the Mark V still is. The Vanguards are nothing like the early Weatherbys. Very decent rifles but not like they used to be. Roy Weatherby came up with decent magnum calibers that are still popular today. Beautiful handmade rifles. Started business in 1945. We would drive buy Roy Weatherbys shop everytime when going to see my grand parents. They simply are not the same.

A 600 grain slug with all that energy will drop almost anything. I myself would not want to almost drop a large male Kodiak. Not saying you can't. I just don't see many folks chasing Kodiaks with a shotgun. Why? There are so many decent rifles out there that will get the job done for sure.

Given a choice, I would never hunt a bear with a shotgun. But if one were charging, then I do think a 12ga with this sort of slug would stop it.

As for the Weatherby, I think people like to hate on a more expensive product, even when it is proven to be superior. Two different lines for different budgets, Mark V vs Vanguard. Also helps to explain why there are so many different cartridges out there. Folks swear by their own personal favorites. This thread is a perfect example.

I'd love to own a Mark V. I've always liked Weatherby 270 Magnum. Yes they are expensive but not crazy expensive. If I wanted to spent that kind of scratch I'd buy a nice Browning bolt action. I'd like to have a Brennecke Black Magic. It's bad ass.

What's funny to me is how some folks will penny-pinch on a quality rifle, but spend through-the-nose for their truck. And a good scope will often cost more than the rifle, but some folks won't go there thinking the rifle has to cost more than the scope. Crazy rationale.

I think that any would be a good choice as well. I still think that I am going to lean towards a .270. I don't plan on hunting anything "big", just white tail and some hogs. So with that in mind, i still feel that the .270 would work great.

Same with binoculars and range finders too. Yeah it's nuts to buy a decent rifle and put a Tasco scope on it.
