Kodiak bears can weigh up to 1600 lbs and head can be 10ft up. Reach up to 14 ft easily. Nothing remotely close down here in the lower 48. Gun....go BIG. 2nd largest Kodiak taken with a BIG hand gun is on display at Dave's Meats here in Arvada,CO. Dropped it less than 15 ft from him...BALLS...BIG BALLS...

I’d probably want a hot loaded 300 Win Mag at minimum for Kodiak’s or big ass Alaskan bears. I remember reading an article where it talked about hunting guides up there carrying either a 45-70 or a shotgun loaded with slugs for bears.

.270 is a great choice, shoots nice and flat. .30-06 is certainly the standard and you can never go wrong with it. Since you're in New Mexico, long distances are a probability, so that would lean towards the .270 or maybe a .300 magnum. I'm a fan of the Weatherby line and the new 6.5-300 would be a showstopper. Shoots flatter than any other .300, but the ammo would be pricy.

Slight thread jack....sorry...#1..no shotgun slug has enough penetrating power to take a Kodiak. Suicidal..
#2... SCORE!!!. This thread reminded me of the Marlin lever I saw last Saturday at my favorite pawn shop where I get $1 DVDs and tools, etc.
Just called.. The Marlin lever is a 1895 Alaskan chambered in Marlin .450!!!!. $599. Paid $120 over the phone to hold it for me until Friday. My Kodiak killer....SCORE!!!!

Nice find! Please tell me it has an octagon barrel? They just look so much more aggressive!

Nope. Round barrel. I do have a vintage Savage single shot lever chambered in .22 "center" fire with octagonal barrel. Don't even ask how much I'd sell it for. Ammo is still available but...$$$$$

A buddy of mine had one his grandpa gave him. Probably the most accurate .22 I ever shot. Most fun too.

Another nice thing about the 270, ‘06, and 308, is that you can walk into almost any hardware store or shop from Florida to Alaska and buy ammo off the shelf.
If you’ve ever known someone who left their ammunition at home when they left for their hunt, you understand how nice this can be!

The shotguns with slugs aren’t for killing em, the idea they have is just to scare em off/make em think twice.

I was reloading when I was 12. RCBS Rock Chucker. I still have my ballistic log books. I'm going to my storage unit Sat. I'll post pics of it. How many of you here were reloading at 12? To the OP...Get a freaking 30.06 and be done with it. No semi auto. Go bolt. I'm old school. Oh... Don't go cheap on binocs and range finder.

All you do is piss them off. Not a good idea. They are at the top of the food chain. If that's the case then make sure you can run faster than anyone with you. Fatest slowest guy is mauled.

30-06 would be my choice too. I own 4. Bullet selection is main reason. I have shot everything from 55 grain to 180s. You can get 220s which would be my choice for elk in heavy cover. Not sure you can still buy the 55s. They have nylon jackets which leave no rifling marks or so I have heard. I shoot turkeys at times with the 55s.

What's good is when reloading you have a wide variety of bullets to choose from. Sierra, Nosler which is my favorite, Hornady for example. Gun powder the same....Primers are critical too...CCI..the best...

If long distances are a concern for elk than .300 or 8mm mag would be a good choice. That is if you handle recoil. I hunt with a guy that shoots whitetail with a 300 and he is a little guy. Too much gun for where we hunt and it rocks him back pretty good. Hunting with the mags is not a real issue other than weight. Sighting them in is another story. Ammo is expensive too.

Go ahead. upload_2018-4-23_20-3-30.jpg upload_2018-4-23_20-4-40.jpg From AK Fish & Game site>>>
What is the best rifle to use for brown bear hunting?

Most experienced hunters consider a .30-06 rifle with a 180 grain soft-nosed bullet to be the smallest effective caliber for Kodiak brown bears. The .300 mag, .338 mag., and .375 mag. are popular and well-suited calibers. A waterproof rifle stock is also beneficial during a Kodiak hunt.

don't see any advice about shotguns... Just saying. Kodiaks have been taken with a bow. There is always a BIG rifle backup in case shit heads south. Same with a shotgun although I've never heard of a hunter taking a shotgun to kill a Kodiak. Why??? And if crazy enough>>> a BIG rifle backup.......https://youtu.be/FsJLISMIPjg

yep.jpg Just sayin..... AK BIG bear hunting is a whole new ball game......
