My dad retired in 1986; he worked for GM for 37 years. They took good care of him and reciprocated the loyalty. Those days are long gone. He was not in the unions. He retired when he saw the company going down the tubes. Back in the day, companies took care of their employees - not anymore.

Company benefits are not a new thing - it’s part of ones overall compensation package.

A movie was made in 81 which contain a few interesting parallels to today, (The Last Chase). Here is one review of the movie.
"In a fuel-starved future, the totalitarian government has just impounded all private vehicles. Twenty years ago, the world was ravaged by a mysterious disease. Race car driver Franklyn Hart (Lee Majors) lost his family during the epidemic. Hart is now the spokesman for the mass transit system. He is being investigated for breaking into the impound lot and in danger of re-education. Ring (Chris Makepeace) is a hacker anti-authority boarding school student. Ring goes on the run from the police and gets Hart's help to drive to "Free California". The government has to stop this symbol of personal freedom."

Hydro is a saving grace to produce electricity. It's a good thing we have the existing dam infrastructure in place. I'll leave it at that.

I can’t complain. GM put a roof over my head, food in my belly and sent me to college. In 1986 when my dad retired GM was the worlds largest company, had a 50% market share. It’s not the same company obviously but provided a lot of high paying jobs for a lot of Americans enabling them to live a quality life with no college edumaction for a long time. In the 1980s where I grew up in a town of about 100,000, GM employed 30,000 workers.... do the math.

Oh, I can do the math. Had a neighbor in Kali that was union at the Camaro plant in Van Nuys before it closed. Made big money. A super after 25 years. Bragged about how little he had to do.He got his high school drop out son a job there. $20 a hour sweeping up milling machine tailings. This was 30 years ago. Great.. ....

I don't think Kali is going to survive this electric conversion... I mean they can barely keep the lights on in Nor Kal... Can't imagine what this will bring.... I'd vote for nuclear power as well.... I mean we have thousands of nuclear plants cruising the oceans on a daily basis, and hanging out at almost all U.S. ports on a daily basis...

Kali is going to shutdown their last nuclear plant (Diablo Canyon) in a year or two taking 2400 MW of clean energy off the grid. That’s a lot of wind turbines and solar panels...

LOL... really did mean thousands.... almost all Navy ships are nuclear powered: cruisers, frigates, destroyers, carriers, subs... not sure on the replenishing ships, but a high possibility... the subs are silent and deadly...

What do they care? Somebody else has to have the panels and turbines in their back yard. Not Kali.

OOOOH MAN!!!!! I remember the large power failure in So Kal in 2011... It was traumatizing to say the least... LOL... I was watching the exorcism of Emily Rose and right when she called out Lucifer's name the power cut out.... I was on base and had to shower with my phone flashlight propped up on the corner... I can't wait...

I don’t think Germany could handle the EV surge. Their recent energy experiment is an interesting data point.

Probably the main point, is to pull the cars from the regular folks and entrap them within their city limits, since the bus and electric car will only go so far...

I agree. It seems a no brainer to me; as long as the engineers do their research, and make sure they don t build the reactor on top of a fault line like the lame brains did at the Trojan plant in Oregon.

Yeah, the Fitzgerald and the McCain are examples of safe nuclear propulsion over the last decade as there was no type of chemical spill that we know of after their fatal wrecks...

I doubt it. People will get home from work and plug there car in and turn up the AC in the house. With global warming there will be more people running AC. When I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin no one had AC in there house or vehicles. We moved to Texas in 1966 and my dad had to special order a vehicle with AC. I would bet that most people up there have AC in their homes now.

Don’t forget too, global warming as measured by “modern science” is a guess at best. Modern science has been around for a nanosecond in relation to the history of the planet. Anyone who rules out the possibility that the climate wouldn’t have changed anyways is foolish. We really have no idea. Even climate alarmist scientists agree that a total freeze in carbon outputs right now would have a minimal impact on global temperatures.

My dad retired after almost 40 years with world's largest aluminum company. Pension at 80% last 5 years salary, $1m health insurance, long term care insurance, and kept his life insurance. No way that is happening today.
