Not having dollar signs on the gas pumps and the diesel pump had to be cleared by a crank system..

Leaded gas was KING and full service meant just that; gas started, oil checked and all glass cleaned with a squeegee & a towel..

I was going to say using microfiche machines but although they went out with the ark in the UK so did betamax videos, fax machines and check books which you lot seem reluctant to get rid of.

Whatever this forum told me to do
the 1st time I heard Rush "Spirit of Radio" was on a reel to reel in a Dr's house in Galveston.

My grandparents house had an attic fan. that house survived the 1900 storm.

Trust me, it drives most of us nuts as well. We're SO concerned about medical privacy and all of that...and yet most medical orders and the like are sent over....a fax. And I personally haven't balanced a checkbook in decades, though I check my account every day and have a head for numbers.

I still use a checkbook, I pay most of our bills through the mail. Seems archaic but I trust the mail system more than I do the internet and getting hacked

On one of my rum runs to Juarez in my Lotus Elan +2S 130, I remember buying gas at 23-27 cents per gallon. I also passed five stationary patrol cars at 110+ mph, and not one chased after me. Those were the days!

The reason the fax has survived so long is BECAUSE of its inherent security. It is much more difficult - probably impossible - to intercept a fax signal and decode it into the image that is being sent. If you have security at the sending and receiving end you have it covered.

Your last statement is key. I've had medical professionals happily send me documentation at my work place based on my statement that "Yes, it's in a public area, but I'll be standing there waiting on it and I'll make sure no one else sees it." LOL

I agree in principle with what you're saying, but it still presumes a level of personal responsibility and trust.

Reminiscing, which is what we do when getting old, here's some pics of the car I bought at age 20. It was one of five in Colorado at the time, and I loved it. But being a British car, it took adjusting and fixing every weekend to keep it running through the week. Fast and nimble at under 1800 lbs., it could do controlled four wheel drifts through mountain canyon curves at 80 mph.

I ran it in autocrosses along with my Austin Healy Bugeye Sprite and MGB GT. The Lotus consistently beat the 4 cyl Porsches, 427 Corvettes and other sports cars of the era. I drove it to 1st place B class championships in two years. Yep, those were the days!

But, once I got my first Toyota Celica in 1976, that was the end of Brit cars and we've been a Toyota family ever since.

Same driveway 52 years later, this photo taken yesterday.

Wait a minute, these aren't supposed to be thing anymore? My brother-in-law still has one in his ranch style home, opens the windows and attic hatch and it's like sitting in a wind tunnel. I just assumed they were common for cheapskates who don't like running the A/C at temperatures designed to suit the human body....

We've got one in our house and I absolutely love it. Not only does it help to stave off early AC usage in late spring/early fall, but it's right outside my son's bathroom, so it serves dual usage as an attic fan and the world's biggest fart fan. :)

My mom's house is an 1820s build on a late 1700s fieldstone foundation. The main carry beams in the house are old world hand hewn chestnut beams. It has a 3 or 4' attic fan that will lift your hair if your standing under the hatch.

Or until the heater fails in the winter and you can't get one for over a week... pair of blankets on the bed and it was still ridiculously cold. I slept on the couch.
