German shepherd hot spot. Not ear infection

So I carefully washed off around his ear on the outside and some of the hair came off. Now I'm thinking he's got a hot spot on the outside of the ear and not an ear infection.





He had a hot spot on his back a few weeks ago.







August 24 his shoulder blade on the same side clearing up.

Try L-Lysine, it cleared up whatever was going on with this feral cat in two days.

 

Now that we are not trying to squirt shit in his ear.
Hes more comfortable with us checking him out.

He let me shave around his ear but the clippers can't handle the fine undercoat hair,so I'll get some new ones.

I need to shave the area to get the spot to clear up and dry out.

We used this and black tea with aspirin on his last spot on his back.

 

clip and clean with diluted betadine. keep using pred and gabapentin. do not use aspirin at the same time as prednisone. the zymox spray can be used in conjunction with all the other meds.

 

A little Chlohexidine will clear that right up.

It's likely an extension of the ear infection and from scratching the ears. I get alot of patients that lose hair and get infection around the ear from scratching, but the root of the problem is the ear infection. Hot spots are caused by allergies. Given his ear and hot spot issues, I would strongly consider putting him on Apoquel or Cytopoint. It may prevent future ear and skin infections. It's not cheap, but very effective against allergies. Prednisone works as well short term, but it's not a good long term solution for allergic skin disease. Too many side effects.
Allergies break down the outer skin layers, which leads to secondary invasion by bacteria and yeast from scratching. If you treat the source of itching with Apoquel or Cytopoint, you prevent the ear and skin infections. They are revolutionary drugs in my opinion. Best of luck with your Shepherd. He's doing better now. Got some new clippers and shaved all around his ear.
I've been cleaning his ear on the outside without fighting and growling. The inside of his ear is fine, it's the outside that's messed up I couldn't tell from the pictures until I was able to come home and look at it.

He doesn't shake his head and is more normal now.

Hes back to normal now. This is the second time hes had this skin thing.
not sure what caused it, but hes back on his regular food and no treats just to rule out food cause.

Had a GSD - he was my first male, second GSD who had horrible yeast in his ears. His ears were bright red. He's gone now, we're on our 6th GSD from the rescue. Feel for you.

 

Just a little up date on this,

Thais shit came back a few weeks ago on his back by his tail and a few small places on his side.
So back to the vet we went, The vet took a little piece of it to look under the scope and said it was a bacterial infection on the skin.
he was put on Anti bionics for 30 days, and has cleared up. The only thing i can think of that might be the cause is my Aunts house down the driveway HAD 7 cats that were pissing on everything. I got rid of ALL the cats. Fingers crossed that was the problem..
