I was thinking it couldn't be good for coolant flow...I'm sure it serves some purpose, but "cylinder block water jacket spacer" doesn't make sense to me. What is it spacing out? Is it meant to prevent cylinder deflection under load, could plastic even do that? The cylinder heads aren't resting on that thing, so they aren't spaced because of it...

I'm definitely not running as wild on the boost as several of the folks here, but now I'm contemplating an additional oil cooler for reliability and future boost...would a spin-on adapter be suitable or is that not a preferred tactic? Sorry, mild tangent...

That's how @Mdl has his setup, seems to be working out. I had issues with it being too close to my sway bar, so I over-complicated it as I tend to do...

I used the Baxter adapter with a thermal t-stat sandwich plate going to a air/oil cooler. I spoke with Baxter and no failures with running the sandwich plate and filter. I average about 180 deg oil on return.

Baxter said they had a few Toyota that made contact but one was loose bushing and another was from a previous front end collision with sway bar pushed back that wasn't fixed.

@Jowett and @Silver17 didn't Matt Smith in the Facebook post with Prospeed talk about inadequate cooling. Why he recommended using the red coolant and upping the rad cap psi to the TRD one?

The spacer doesn’t space anything, it is a director of coolant flow. It restricts or promotes coolant flow to various areas around the cylinders.

    From the SAE Tech paper.

“For reduction of fuel consumption, a new device “Water Jacket Spacer” which improves temperature distribution of a cylinder block bore wall was developed. In the case of a conventional cylinder block, coolant flow concentrates at the bottom and middle region of the water jacket. While temperature of the upper bore wall is high (due to high-temperature combustion gas) the temperature of the lower bore wall is low, since its only function is to support the piston. When the developed spacer is inserted into a water jacket, the coolant flow concentrates at the upper part of the jacket. As a result, cooling ability to the upper bore wall was improved and temperature of lower bore wall was increased, thereby reducing fuel consumption.”

Using this spacer, Toyota has not only restricted flow to the lower bore, but largely blocked fresh coolant flow the upper bore on the intake side of all cylinders in the UR engine. The spacer goes from the floor of the block almost to the cylinder head. The upper portion of the spacer on the exhaust side is open. In other applications, the spacer is open on both exhaust and intake sides. Remember, roughly 70% of piston heat moves through the rings and into the coolant jacket. With the extra heat from boost and the restricted coolant flow, it’s simply getting too hot there. We need to trim the spacer to allow an appropriate amount of coolant access to the upper bore on the intake side.

Mine definitely made contact, but I properly torque everything and never had a collision...knock on wood.

Proximity to sway bar and shiny undercarriage from oil leaking out of filter/adapter interface:

Trim some off the top, or drill some holes to allow more coolant through? What year did they add this spacer, or was it always in the 5.7?

So, short of tearing the heads off and trimming those jackets, any other suggestions to help mitigate the problem?

Stock motor mounts? I wonder if mounts like Solid Offroad mounts would lessen the chance. I mean, I understand the chassis itself moves quite a bit in the bumpies - enough for aftermarket bumpers to hit fenders and such.

    Every UR engine has these.

Unfortunately, the heads will have to come off to access these.

That pic shows a spacer with open intake and exhaust sides, in the UR, the spacer covers the nearly the entire intake side.

Oil/Air cooler using 10AN hose. Could be 12AN for increased flow. I'm using a bigger filter wix 51516 now.

I bypassed everything else that uses the coolant, Throttle Body, Trans, Oil Cooler. I still see ECT get up to 205F though. I'm going to make a custom shroud and upgrade my single electric fan to dual fans to see if it helps.

No, it's not. Just an aftermarket copy. OEM trans cooler and a 10 row engine oil cooler.
I had a car slam on their brakes and I hit them at 10mph. Only tilted my bumper and cracked the grill and wind fins. So I just removed the wind things.

Have you had a chance to look at a spacer on a 2UR-GSE? Same asymmetrical intake vs exhaust side pattern?

Sounds like coolant selection and water wetter type additives should be used too. Pink vs red, radiator cap, etc as others have anecdotally said for a while.

Yes. Water wetter is cheap insurance. I use it in the intercooler coolant and engine coolant.

The spacers leave little vertical gap, but are snuggled up nice a tight on the intake side, thus cooling on the intake is very restricted. Those cross drilling between the cylinder bores probably don’t flow much at all… when the head gaskets fail, that is the location.

The dang thing even has what appears (we should research) to be a trim here line molded right in.

When I rebuild the engine in my garage I'll cut along that trim line. Sure seems like the line is there for a reason, maybe forgotten between design and manufacturing?

2URGSE has the same spacer, as the cooling jackets on the 3UR 5.7 and 2UR 5.0 are the same depth. With the way the block is designed, the top ring on the 5.7 actually drops just below the cooling jacket at BDC. With the 5.0, the rings are always adjacent to a cooling jacket.

Emissions and efficiency are the reasons. It works just fine when normally aspirated.

Is it more for an "if" situation to prevent cooler areas or its a known issue that its needed?

    Too many mods to come
Yep adding an additional oil cooler is on the list-

I didn't have any additional fuel filter other than the one sock in the tank. But since we're upgrading the rails and lines not a bad idea to add one in the setup.

    Many on the way.
It’s not that it runs too cool, but rather running it hotter than required helps Toyota beat the emissions requirements. My thoughts lean towards boost is pushing the heat well past any benefits and to the point we’re breaking pistons.
