On 35s, sure... but you gain so much more with marginal RPM increase, it's like saying too much power is bad... blasphemous...personally, I'm still on stock gears, 33s, and stock Maggy 1900 pulley and injectors, so I can't talk :anonymous:

When I was down in Mexico I saw 0-110mph on 35's with 5.29's do pretty good. I usually drive 75-80mph and see rpm's about 2750-2850rpm, a pretty good power/torque area. 4.30 and 4.88 would be quite beneficial above 70mph to ramp up for more speed. I find myself not going for the high mph and just playing with the quick takeoffs.

I'd have to double check but I may be off
    Edit: tires are true 35's
    55mph@1760. 70mph@2200. 75mph@2500. 81@2860rpm
I just copied from hpt so could be off a little.

You're seeing the same (maybe even a few hundred RPM more) than me and I'm running 33.4" Falkens.

I made the decision to make 1st almost a safety net/towing reserve gear. It's into second gear really fast unless under heavy load. That is fine for me because it's not hunting for gears up top anymore, which I believe offsets the quick gear shifts from a stop. I did it for decreased drivetrain strain (like @centex I see ~20% calculated load reduction) knowing it tows about as much as it doesn't.

These discussions are what helps others make their own informed decisions. If I wasn't towing, holding 1st a little longer wouldn't be bad. But I'm also not manually shifting, so it's minimal impact.

That sounds way off. I'm at ~2650rpm at 80mph on speedo. Are you sure you got 5.29s and not 4.88s? :D

Speedometer reading on all trucks should be:

RPM / Trans Gear / Diff Gear * Stock Tire Circumference (feet) * 60 minutes / Length of a Mile (feet)

    So 2300 / 0.588 / 5.29 * 32*3.141/12 * 60 / 5280 = 70mph on dash

All of those should be constants for everyone, the dash only knows stock tires, the trans gears are stock, the only thing that changes is RPM and gearing. Now if you have 4.88s:

    2300 / 0.588 / 4.88 * 32*3.141/12 * 60 / 5280 = ~76mph on dash

5.29s should be well over 2500rpm to display 80mph on the dash:

    2650 / 0.588 / 5.29 * 32*3.141/12 * 60 / 5280 = ~81mph on dash

Now if you have the rough country (?) speedometer calibrator thing that's a different story. But 2300rpm sounds exceptionally low otherwise.

For some reason in hpt my rpm in scanner fluctuates about 200rpm up/down. While my dash rpm is steady. Never really looked into it.

I’m up closer to 3000 at 80 with my 5.29’s and 34’s. And depending on which speedometer I’m looking at I’m within 2-3mph of the dash.

Welp....The Magnuson is on it's way!!
Should be here in a couple more weeks!!
After seeing and feeling what the TRD Blower did for my Tacoma I cant wait to see what the Magnuson does for the Tundra!!!
This is going to be the longest few weeks ever!!

Hmmm...so you should regear the Tundra after getting the Magnuson installed?
I did get my Tacoma regeared back in the day but figured the Tundra would be fine.
I mean if it needs to be regeared I'm fine with that especially since I'll be doing a lot of towing.

If you’re gonna do a lot of towing, def regear it. At the minimum, have the gears REM polished.

@bflooks is a good guy to hit up on re-gearing and towing without big ol' tires.
I ran for 14 years with stock gearing, 4.30 and the little tvs1900 and 34 inch tires. Re-grared to 5.29 and although I lost some top end its way more fun and usable with 35's.

Him and I both gained a full 2mpg and a usable 5th gear when towing when we geared to 5.29’s. I’d love to try towing on stock size tires with the gears.

BLUF: 5.29s, a traction device in the rear, enjoy it.

TL;DR: Even naturally aspirated, the regear opened up another gear while towing with heavy 33s about half the time (forced induction made that 100% of the time). Calculated load dropped ~20% (which is really a drop throughout the entire drivetrain) and RPM deltas are negligible in the grand scheme of things, (mostly seen at highway speeds). It feels light and is both responsive and predictable. Also doesn't hunt for gears or lock/unlock the TC when cruising. It just does what you want it to with minimal effort.

The gearing is still my favorite and highest impact mod I've done, even after going forced induction. It's great seeing more people making the jump. If it is an either/or option, I'd choose gears first.

I'm just one opinion, though. Forced induction wasn't really in my plans and I was focused on longevity/towing performance. Lots of success stories of people towing heavy without gearing, with and without power adders. I'm just here saying these trucks respond extremely well to regearing. Gearing + power adder = nirvana

Someone to watch this upcoming towing season is @Silver17

We have the exact same travel trailer and tow within only a few hundred pounds of one another (based on scales). I think his gear install is still pending, but I'm hopeful he shares his reviews after they're done.

The waiting is killing me, it just keeps getting pushed off. Sorry for holding your ECGS tools hostage. It’s tough because I need the truck for some upcoming weekend projects, yet also need to get it done before our first trip in May. There’s a reason I tried to have it scheduled for mid February! I know he will probably have it for 2 weeks. I wish I had a better option.

Good news, I just got FedEx shipping confirmation from Australia for the valve body.
