Fuck that, set the waste gate to 20psi and let that baby chew. 90% of the people in this group run 10psi everyday with a stock engine

LOL we need that 4L80e conversion. Then I'd throw 20psi at this damn thing

Someone needs to chime in here and talk in more detail about the drivability with that conversion. I'm curious, but only because I try to not be completely flat footed when things go sideways.

Ever driven a 4spd automatic? It’s like that but with one that even stock can take a helluva beating and built they are probably one of the strongest transmissions out there. Not to mention a dime a dozen in junkyards. They were installed behind 2500/3500 gm’s for a couple decades.

I thought the 4L80e’s were known for the pump disintegrating and getting glitter all through the trans.

Lots more built options and many used in the big offroad builds. I’d trust a 4L80 over a built ab60 lol

There’s another thread with someone having a built 8speed only concern was the downshift on passing but that’s being worked on in the firmware

In fact, I honest do not know if I have, but after driving this truck with 6 gears, I'm curious what they are like with 2 less and different ratios. And if the feedback is positive or not. Strength is one thing, driveability is another.

Gotcha! I vaguely remember seeing a reference to that but thought it was only a quick comment in the "What have you done" thread. Thx for the nudge

Feels similar to the tundra, just less shifting since the gears are longer. I just had my 4l80e in my buggy rebuilt with some mild upgrades for $2000, and the guy was confident it would handle the ~700hp from my supercharged stroker, and that was after the $100 junkyard one lasted for a few years.

Course, absolute apples to oranges in application, but point being it's a similar ilk of automatic and behaves and feels similarly to the Tundra transmission.

I’d never go back to 4 gears after having 6 for driveability but for strength, it’s hard to beat.

I can't find the 3URFE to 4L80e adapter listed on ProSpeed's website any more...so might be a moot point. Anyone have the direct link bookmarked?

I’m in the same boat. The tall 1st gear in the 4l80 is a tough pill to swallow as well. Like starting out in 2nd. But they can be built for cheap.

I’d love to see the 8speed become a realistic reality, but only from a reliability standpoint. Not that I’ve had reliability issues with my AB60… knock on wood…

Let alone any of us wanting to maintain 4wd. I'm not aware of a 4L80e conversion in a 4wd tundra.

    Did I miss that part?

There are 4WD and AWD transfer cases for the 4L80e, not sure what would need to be done electronics/switching-wise, and of course custom driveshafts would be needed

Gearvendors has traditionally been an add-on unit that you could adapt to virtually any transmission tail housing. But it only works in 2wd unless you have a divorced t case setup, and it's manually operated. I don't know how they would make it work otherwise; there aren't enough planetaries in a 3 speed OD to make a second overdrive.

An Allison 1000, on the other hand, has the requisite internal parts to swap valve bodies from later '06+ models to earlier '02-05 models to go from a 5 speed single overdrive to a 6 speed double overdrive. I'd love to have an Allison 1000 swapped tundra :D

Just run a manual tcase like god intended :D

Edit: you could run a divorced stock case or get an adapter without much issue too, or at least I could design you one.

If a manual 5 or 6 speed transmission and maintaining 4x4 was an option that would be so amazing. I’d drive the hell out of that and have fun while also never worrying about the trans again. I’d drive it like the sports car it isn’t.

I'm mainly reminding people that retaining 4wd is going to take some custom fabrication and likely some tricking (relay boxes) of the VSC/ABS system as well. It hasn't been resolved commercially yet.

I plan to keep an AB60 trans until a viable 8HP solution is found.
