Yeah, that's what I was thinking; even if it's only for a brief period. Soon as we got into the neighborhood and leveled out, temps dropped quickly, but still...

I can't imagine that's doing anything good for the truck.

The cold fault shifting program holds the shifts a little longer to get it up to temp.

Pinning the thermostat I thought was stupid until I did it. The trans takes the same amount of time as normal to warm up, and on my truck dropped the temps 20+ degrees the rest of the time. At least that would put your temps into manageable albeit still hot realm. If I see over 220 I start freaking out and planning what to do if it keeps climbing.

@snivilous Still recommend it in places that hit single digit temps?

There are places that hit those low temps, below 20 or so that need it unpinned. I only data logged my temps in the 20's.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    Please get the cooler.

I ran 230's in Houston without it. unladen, hwy cruise

installed mine at ~20k miles, right before I installed the S/C.

now I run pinned and it tops out at ~170.

as others have said - it warms up just as fast.

Last summer - sitting in Houston traffic I touched a max of 185.

FTR - cooler fluid does NOT affect mileage.

I saw that one too and was going to share! It basically confirms for me that “too cool” really isn’t a thing, and I plan to keep mine as cool as possible from here on out. Happy to have seen that as I was just thinking about unpinning it for winter, not anymore. Also notice what kills the rubber seals is not just heat but the temp difference of them getting hot and then cooling back down. The less often you let the fluid get to 200+ and then cool back down over and over again the better off they will be. With it pinned in winter it will likely stay under 170 not towing for me.

As much as a don’t want the rough shifting, the extreme is basically explicitly made for high horsepower vehicles so I think the choice is clear. The price is the same at least. And the price is fair enough assuming no other duties/taxes that I may not even bother sending the core back to Australia if I did it.

I added the OEM cooler almost immediately and left the thermostat pinned. In the summer when it's 120+, I never see above 208. It's been in the 40s- 70s lately; it's at 145-170.

I don't unpin it when I drive to my parents that live in a similar location to you. I would still try it and watch the temps and see what it does. It's surprising how fast they warm up with it always pinned so I wouldn't worry, but if the temps stay too cool it's 10 seconds to pull the pin.

It seems anyway to keep the trans cooler is the ticket. I missed the memo back in the day. 35s, stock gears, pulling campers over 12k passes.....not no mo. At minimum this round will be 5.29 gears, VB, pinned trans thermo and taking a bit easier in the hills. Live and you learn Lol

I wonder how often it gets that high? I guess that 500PSI sensor I ordered isn't going to cut it

To this day I still laugh at people who say engineers know best. No, the penny pinchers know best and squeeze every profit they can as long as the truck makes it to 5/60k warranty period. I run pinned, normal everyday driving its never about 160* round about. Thanksgiving weekend, I went up north, temp was around 36, trans never got over 130*. Went I would get on it, it would jump to around 140 and quickly come back down. I am on the side of, trans have soft parts, not everything is metal for the most part, so keeping it cool is best.

That’s the hydrostatic drive pressure (think how an enginedyno loads a motor to determine brake horse power) not the line pressure in the transmission. I think the 500psi unit should be safe.

Never. Impressive that extreme build can handle that for any amount time they're doing something right.

Any of these guys forced induction? Do they also run larger tires? Do they tow up mountain passes? Stock form yeah unpinned makes sense. Forced fed it's a different story it seems.

That statement is too much from Toyota.
I believe the WS fluid was designed for best longevity under 200 can withstand to 300deg. I've been shooting for anything under 190 deg.
