I figured it was not a big deal & better to leave it alone, unless they can fix it without any major disassembly I'm going to have them leave it alone.

    Thanks

I thought each spark plug tube had its own seal that could be replaced. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the problem though.

On the valve cover there are tubes seals that are replaceable. But at the bottom, in all of Toyotas great wisdom, they decided to have the tubes pressed fit with no replaceable seal or liquid gasket material. So if it leaks at the bottom where it's pressed into the head, you are SOL. On the top is easy, change the seals.

It seems to be leaking from the bottom.

If it's a press fit, loctite and others make a liquid sealant that should work and not impact the press tolerance. Check Loctite 680.

    Harrop 2650, 37” tires,
Last week I towed my 6,000# 80 series on a ~2,200# trailer from 5,000ft up to 10,000ft. Harrop, stock 3.3 gears, 37's, WD hitch, Redarc BC. I'm thinking about upgrading the tranny cooler if I would be towing more consistently. Air temps were ~85* down in Denver and with the initial 5k-8k foot accent the air temp drops ~20*. At 8k feet the trans pan temp got up to 217* while engine stayed below 200*. Hottest the engine oil got was 216*.

I have the 8 speed and keeping lockup was easier in 5th and 6th(1:1), but the road is too curvy to maintain that speed most of the time. It was difficult to get the convertor to lockup once I dropped any lower than 5th. It did lock in 3rd and 4th from 5k-8k, but by the time it did the trans temp was already over 210*. Going from 8k-10k it never would lock in 3rd or 4th. Still hit 217* on the trans and the ambient temp was 55* at that moment.

Only took 3 minutes once I started descending from 10,000ft to 9,500ft for trans to be back at 190* because it was only 50* ambient temp at that point. Read the Tundra tranny cooler is 22% larger than mine, but I have not verified that with my particular year of LX.

There's a Seatrab 20 row cooler upgrade foe the tundras also. The vendor Genuine Cooling on this forum sells the kits. Could likely just get the cooler by itself.

How the hell does it stop sealing at the bottom???

    :p

I seriously doubt, the cam tower reseal includes touching the tube outside removing the "tension" by removing the valve cover & restoring it by replacing the seal at the top & returning the valve cover.

Straight press fit w/ zero sealant. Given that it seats directly above the combustion chamber, I can see the clearance between the aluminum head and and steel tube growing large enough to weep through the gap. Maybe the steel looses some of the press fit tension over thousands of heating and cooling cycles?

They say it is fixed, I had no codes, or issues other than when I changed the plugs a year ago & coils a few weeks ago I had oil in #1 so I'm leaving it alone.

For what it's worth, I've never heard, nor read of the one different (alignment) bolt that is to be installed first in the flex plate/torque converter during reassembly mentioned here by @ViktorG. Attention to detail counts for so much. I looked it up in DIY AllData where it is mentioned, but I never would've thought to do that and I'm 100% sure that I wouldn't have noticed it. I'm not going to be able to do the swap myself, we just don't have what I would need where I work, and it would take me 5 times as long (which is okay) but I wouldn't feel right tying up a bay that long even if we had the stuff (which I'd feel uncomfortable with). Just from a curiosity standpoint, of those of you that have changed out your transmission (@Mdl), who was aware of the alignment bolt?

Well, FFS, it doesn't seem to want to let me start the video at the 42nd minute where Viktor talks about the bolt.
(Also, I'm guessing that most of us here are subscribed to his channel, and are liking his videos . . .)

20-row SETRAB was $225'ish, not including connectors or bracket. Easy upgrade from the 15 row since everything is plugged and play. You can use the SETRAB specs to source a cheaper option.

    Hope that helps.

I only knew about it when I was talking to the Toyota head mechanic. When I fried my transmission I was asking questions no one at the service counter knew the answer. So I was able to go back and talk. I asked what it was and he said it'll have a shoulder. He said as long as each bolt is snugged down evenly it isn't detrimental as it'll usually line up.
All they showed in the manual was a pic but no real explanation.

The Genuine Cooling kit is a rip off in my opinion. Just today I ordered the parts to convert a customers 2021 with a trans cooler, it's $150 for the transmission thermostat and a fancy oil cooler is sub $200. Add in some hoses and a bracket for another $50. I can't fathom why their kit costs $1500. "What makes our kit is our made in the USA bracket". I design brackets like that as one off parts on every single truck I work on to suit whatever modifications they have, I don't know how their bracket justifies an additional $1000 but to each their own.

Maybe I should make "Sniv Speed Shop Transmission Cooler" since the 2019+ guy seem to love getting railed at $1500 for an oil cooler.

I have an 18 with a stock cooler. After towing my 20'ish camper through nevada I was seeing over 200° temps. After someone said something I thought would be a shot for an upgrade. Their kit is high priced though so I thought the cooler would have been the biggest part of that.

I agree once you get into searching the parts yourself to find out how companies are price gouging people.
    You should!
As I was telling the other guy I have an 18 with tje stock cooler but was seeing the same temps of one without , towing

I'll drop my truck off next week and you can fab up some mounts for the SC crowd to upgrade the trans cooler to a standalone unit. Thinking the Setrab dual row with a fan. I'll leave the Sequoia t case and a few other goodies in the bed for you to install, too... Haha.

Seriously, though, I am thinking about moving to a separate oil cooler for the transmission. Maybe the Setrab proline with it's own fanpack?

You know I ripped all that shit off my transmission. In winter 170 deg in summer up to 190deg. Only using a cooler. Just my observation...

The Mishimlto dual pass mounted in the lower bumper opening has been serving me well since install. Super simple install location that leaves a ton of space for other things up top. 206* is my new normal at highway speeds, in 5th, towing the 8k lbs brick. Below 200* at all speeds unloaded. These are unpinned temps. If there's one thing I've learned, your mileage will vary since it's appears to be an art, not a science, on trans fluid temps. You might be able to talk to Jesse about it, but I'm not sure he's decided on making that an offering or not. Regardless, that lower opening can work, and the Mishimlto is an appropriate shape to do so. The square coolers aren't.

Glad someone else said it. If I am not mistaken he use to have all the part numbers on his site, error on his part. But this is how I built mine exactly like his for less than1/2 of his cost. I also couldn't see where he was coming up with that price and I am sure he was getting better pricing than I could. At one point asked if he would sell me the mounting bracket for the setrab, yeah as you expected, expensive. Made my own on a plasma table at work, free. This is why I am glad I can wrench on my own stuff and not have to pay ridiculous prices. Greed will ruin us all.
