Unnamed dude who blew his engine up thought it was rods leaving the chat that caused his engine to mist itself, just throwing that out there.

When I was looking at my 3 snapped rods they were the crappiest looking rods. Casting marks were apparent and not even machined.
They could be forged but they are not on par with quality forged rods made by aftermarket ones.
I wonder why engine builders don't use the same rods etc when building theses engines.
I stand corrected by the literature.
@ViktorG and me talked about the shortcomings of the engine when we both blew ours up.

Heck I don’t know what to believe. I didn’t think they were forged either previously. Maybe they use the term very loosely lol. Either way, not all forged rods are created equal either. Everyone always says they are first in line to fail after the rings.

Andrew, at XAT, is doing a special on these sets for $100 shipped if anyone is interested. Going to pick a set up for myself this week from him. They're normally $75 each.

@reywcms thanks for catching the Maggy box for the Whipple not tvs. I found a few TRD SC boxes online when I thought I may have to start over with my airbox.

Great overview and summary of the core limitations of this platform.

...And then comes the transmission problems...

That feeling of oh wow it's pulling so awesome, look 14psi...oh shit! Then that feeling of dread when you need a tow and do an engine swap.

One thing the Whipple and Maggy 2650 have over the tvs1900 is the extra cooling for IAT with the twin brick coolers. The 1900's single cooling brick is insufficient when we are raising the psi compared to Whipple and Maggy 2650.
I think it was mentioned a hundred pages or so ago...
Sorry forgot to add Harrop too.

There's always hope that these folks will one day make 8hp work on 3UR, 1VD should have same bellhousing PCD as 3UR, I would swap in an 8hp95 in a heartbeat.

Oh no, don't be hesitant. It is a safe reliable system!

Back in 2012 we did not have HPT tuning. We only had bullydog which was a terrible canned tune. I was pushing 12psi without upgrading to larger injectors and fuel pump. I was maxed out on the TRD green 535cc injectors and an aeromotive 340lph pump that was not performing well.
I was being an ass and doing major burnouts and the AB60E trans didn't like it.

Anyone running a 18psi radiator cap? Thinking of going from 15 to 18 psi? Extra boiling protection. I do have a new toyota radiator and newish water pump.
I read somewhere our cooling system moves coolant fast and doesn't absorb as much heat from the heads and recommended for those in the higher psi range to use Toyota red coolant, not pink premix, at 50/50 mix with the 18psi cap.

I have the 18psi TRD cap, but have not changed to the red coolant. I read the same thing, I believe that’s more Matt Smith provided advice so it’s probably legit.

I think @ViktorG is pushing ~750WHP on the stock transmission with a valve body upgrade and he drag races his truck.

Over on one of the other Tundra forums one of the SW Asian/Middle Eastern tuners fused his gears just north of that range.

The PS 900WHP turbo build said the 1000HP rated transmissions weren't holding up passed 850s which is why they went with a nonToyota transmission.

Is HP tuner the go to for all you guys? I've been running VFTuner for years and can get a base supercharger tune from them. Or would I be better off getting the canned HP tune from whipple or magnuson and starting over?

I've tweaked shift tables and some other stuff with VF but haven't messed with tuning A/F or timing.

There a a few using VFT and OTT. Seems HPT is more user friendly for those who like to tinker with their tune. I'll change a few things but leave the major tuning for those in the know.
The only canned HPT tune is what Magnuson or Whipple send with the kit. Not sure what Harrop uses but stage 1 is not tuned. Most will get a custom tune from whoever they trust.

Having used both, HP is much more user friendly. VFT may have more parameters available to play with though; I think they also cover more model years (ECU versions).

Second this. I was on the VFT train hoping it'd work out, but at the end of the day HPT is a lot simpler (at least compared to like 2020ish? VFT), has a lot more support in regards to this forum and the HPT forum, and in my opinion most of the benefits of VFT are just fluff (like gear lock, direct shift, all features I wanted and sounded good but at the end of the day were not impressive and the TRD tune ended up performing better with the trans to the point I didn't want those features anyways). Oh and I'm still salty that the original OVT fucked with my transmission and my truck always has to drive in S6 otherwise it won't shift past 3rd

If I did it over again, I would get HPT in a heartbeat and not think twice about VFT. With that said, there's nothing inherently wrong with VFT, just harder to learn (imo) and less options to find someone who actually knows how to use it.
