It's been brought up but no one that we know of has implemented rings with a larger gap or talked about it. Seems like people only mess with the internals of the engine after they grenade a piston/rod. I found a company Total Seal that makes specialty rings but last I checked I don't think they support Tundras.

Total seal makes rings based on the bore size and ring groove dimensions, and they have top and second gapless rings that will fit, but they are proud of them...would cost about half the price I paid for my pistons to get gapless rings for them...

    Bore: 3.701
    Rings: 1.0, 1.2, 2.8

Yes they have the option to search that way. I used their part number search to see if they had a Tundra corollary part but it came up empty. They may have updated their catalog since I searched it or as you suggested search by other parameters.

I think if you want to make big power the pistons and rods set was probably a safe purchase regardless. Reading the other Tundra sites' comments stock bottom and crank are good for some power; rods and pistons are the weak points for these engines. It is hard to say for sure since some people mix crank and wheel power in their estimates.

I agree I threw that around loosely, but I've built motors before and done similar experiments with my old race car (usually valvetrain related). I haven't looked, but if only the engine crossmember came out and I could try a re-ring from the bottom. Again, strictly scientifically speaking, but worth a conversation.

You'll have to take the block out of the truck to do the rings, or at the very least take the heads off and the oil pan off, the pistons have to go in from the top...no way to compress the rings and insert from the bottom.

This is from my Tacoma...but similar setup on the 5.7, mains are in the way preventing insertion from bottom.

Awesome, I love being able to spitball ideas and being able to draw from others experiences. That's why I spend time here and not the "other" Tundra board anymore.

Some whipple pics and vented hood pics for everyone. He's getting the tune checked before the trip to pick up the trailer. After that we'll begin the smaller pulley, injector and custom intake box work.

I haven’t seen anyone stretch the Whipple provided intake tube over the magnuson lid MAF housing yet. I wonder if it’s doable or if a different tube will be needed.

Don't think it'll fit but we think the maggy tube will fit in that tubes place. We'll find out soon.

Thank for this. Given this information and assuming Cylinder Type is 4CYL it looks like there are limited options in Material Type choices:

    Gapless Tops:
    SKU: M3701XC-4
    $276.21 ea
    $2,209.68 total

    Gapless 2nd:
    SKU: T3701XC-4
    $239.78
    $1,918.24 total

Grand total $4,127.92 for a set of 8 both tops and 2nd not including shipping+taxes.

It is hard to say with the anecdotal evidence shared but if we knew the breaking point of the rods and pistons these might be worth the ring upgrade.

The transmission upgrade vendors (IPT and level 10) claim you can push 600-700 to the wheels through the transmission without upgrades. I think BRX on the other forums fused gears on his transmission at around ~700 to 800 WHP and to my knowledge Viktor is still running the "stock" transmission with the IPT valve body and tuned shiftpoints and he is pushig ~750.

Edit. Sorry point is if the rods and pistons can exceed 700 ring look good.

Those are for 4xrings so you only need 2 ea. Something similar to the totals below....allegedly...:spy:

Good point about lube. I always forget the lube.

You have more experience in this department so I defer to your judgement. You are right they only recommend the 2nd Ring replacement for boosted applications.

It's def easier to access things over the maggy with the smaller foot print. I told him to send me some videos.

Originally I was looking at doing the top ring only, but after reading up on their documentation on the lube, I opted to go all-in so to speak. I'm not an expert by any means, I've only rebuilt one Toyota engine, just sharing what I've learned along the way.

That looks clean...makes me wish I waited for the Whipple. Did they have any issues fitting the hood? How are the gaps when closed?

Nope no issues and we used the factory latch and hood struts. Added clear ppf just incase to prevent the clear coat from yellowing etc. Side pic attached

No worries. I reached out to Total Seal with some questions. I will take it up with my installer when I get my gauges installed and a retune done.

Do you think it will need hood pins, or is it pretty solid at speed?

Oh yeah...I guess with the vents you don't have to worry about it lifting. Thanks for the feedback.

Hood looks very nice! If I keep the truck longer term I'll definitely consider it. The bare carbon fiber would match up to the MGM paint nicely
