Very well said! Never heard that sand analogy before but I'm going to use it on my future kids when they want to buy things lol

Wheels look good. My understanding is that 17x8.5 +0 will have about the same poke as 18x9 +20?

    Is that right?

Looks like you and I are on the same boat holding out for the Method 316 (21.5 and 23.5lbs depending on if you go black or titanium).

I have been trying to stay away from black this time around though so neither the Bronze or Black on the Motegi’s fit that bill…and I can’t say that I have seen/heard of those particular Blackhorn’s so I will probably go check them out.

    I'm not 100% sure, but i think 0 offset on a 8.5 rim is still more aggressive of a poke than a +20 with a 9inch wide.
This also crossed my mind so here are some photos of a 8.5 wide rim & 0 offset. This fella does have 17inch rims, but i dont think that would make a difference in this context... the poke looks a lot more aggressive than poke I've seen with +20 on 18x9. See below.

    8.5 Wide with 0 offset:

    upload_2022-2-23_15-23-34.jpg

18x9 +18 example, a +20 would be even more slightly tucked in.. but minimal.

Between 13-16 on street and 17-19 hwy. Even with the OEM setup, it was really hard to get the advertised fuel efficiency unless you drive like a grandma. I've got just over 2k now and not sure if it'll suppose to get better as time goes by as others have eluded to.

I went w/ Falken Wildpeaks as they are cheaper than Nitto RG and Toyo. No complains so far

I like those as well. How was the ride quality compared to stock? Did you notice a big difference over bumps in the road? Do they toss you around or is the ride overall still comfortable?

Surprisingly more comfortable than the OEM Michelins. Perhaps its because 295 has more meat. It's also quiet. The techs at Discount Tire run them and highly recommended over the Nittos.

You can’t go wrong with Toyo or Nitto. They’re both the same company, Toyo owns and makes Nitto. They’re kind of like the Twix commercial in the warehouse. With that said I’d go with the lightest of the two in my opinion.

    Some (useless) Information
-Michelin (who makes BFG) is the number one tire company in America.
-Bridgestone is number one in the world
    -Toyo is number one overall

Bridgestone owns approximately 10% of Toyo. Bridgestone helps with the logistics and Toyo helps build some of their tires. Like the Firestone Destination M/T. Toyo is the only manufacturer thy uses a special machine to make tires. It’s called an A.T.O.M (Advanced Tire Operation Module). Basically, human error is taken out of the equation and they’re built true. You can take their 40x1550r24 M/T on a true wheel and it should take four ounces or less to balance.

No matter what tire you go with I would shop around. Most places price match, including Discount. I went with Simpletire.com for their financing and they price matched eBay with free shipping.

    Good luck

The 8.5” wide wheel with a zero offset has approximately a 4.75” backspace. A 9” wide wheel with a +20 offset has approximately a 5.75” backspacing. So the 8.5” will sit about an inch further out when comparing these two wheel specifications. I actually drive the silver Tundra that ToyotaTundra89 referenced above and love it.
    If you found a 8.5” with around +25 that’d be equivalent to a 9” with a +18

I think 17s are going to be too tight, I would only put like 33"s on and try to keep the weight close to stock. not sure I would want to go with Load E again either.

I kinda like the black toyota ones on the TRD models, but not super thrilled with 20"s

Method has 17x8.5 +35 for 6.2” of backspacing or 17x8 +25 for 5.44” of backspacing for their 703 and 316 models respectively. I really like the poke of yours but want the meat of a 35 on a 17.

What’s wrong with an 18? Method has 18x9’s with a +18. Then you can run a 35 or something equivalent. Keep in mind my tires are a 275. The setup you’re trying to run will appear to stick further out due to the extra width of the 35.

If your wanting a taller tire but something equivalent to what I have. Run a 18x9 +18 with a 285/75 Ridge Grappler. You’ll have a tire that’s more true to a 35” tall tire but without all the width. It’s 35.08 tall, 11.26 wide and weighs 69.45 lbs

Nothing per say, just more rubber on the wheel for airing down to 10-15 PSI out on the trails. I may do 18”. Thanks for all the great info!

I love Rays volks wheel. Have a set on my Evo X (Rays volks CE28). But they are expensive for the tundra. $930 per wheel. I’m planning on going the cheaper option this time for the Tundra and going with Rays Gram Light 57DR-X. Love the concave look. But going to take few months since shipping from Japan.

Stolen from Revere Overland, but 18" rim and 35x12.5, plenty of room to air down :)

    upload_2022-2-24_13-54-36.jpg

Stolen from Wescott Designs, 295/70r18 equivalent to a 34" tire, still plenty of meat to air down to 10-15 psi :)

Oh I see. You actually use your truck LOL. That’s a hard decision then. I went back and got with 17 and 20 for what felt like forever. I settled on 18 and don’t regret it. It’s also because I found the wheels for a steal of a price

Haha yes I do! In Death Valley or Baja I’ll easily hit 50-60mph aired down flying along and well…meat is for the man! Thanks for the feedback on the 18’s.

This is from Baja last year in my Tacoma

Has anyone done a price break done on tires for 17 vs 18? They may be close enough not to matter, but I bet tires for 20s will be more expensive then either. Thats a re-occurring cost after the purchase of the wheels. Whatever size is the most popular will generally be the lowest cost. Plus availability and the number of choices will depend on which tire sells the most in the market. I didn't check this when buying the rims for my car and regret it. The tire size I run on my car is only run on 1 BMW M model and one very rare Mini trim. So needless to say, theres not many options or competition in that size. Those are RAYS, but I'm not buying that for the Tundra.

That’s a story akin to my situation with the 22” Pirelli Scorpion Verde my wife’s XC90 uses (luckily those are good for about 60K) so $2400+ in tires doesn’t come around often.

For me I am trying to get the absolute lightest combo possible without spending too much…so for instance the Method 316’s is about 7lbs more per wheel between 17’s and 18’s.

If I can Pair 21.5 lbs in 17’s with 52lbs of Goodyears Territory MT in 315/70/17s then I am trending in the right direction.

…18lbs of Rays TE37 or Alap 07’s would be better but don’t want to spend $800 per wheel (center caps extra) + $1200 in tires, I would like to put that money towards the TRD lift kit which is gonna be my single most expense other than the cost of the truck itself.

Right now my 90lb wheel/tire combo 295/70/18s on stock rims) has cut my gas mileage down ~4mpgs so trying to get that back with a similar look.
