Can’t say I’ve run into new gear oil that dark, but there are plenty of brands I’ve never used. A clear bottle will make any oil look pretty dark, but the film in the cap is convincing.

The description of it being thick like honey does concern me, but in CA he also doesn’t have to worry about the oil “channeling” in real cold weather, so long as the truck stays in CA.

It’s a tough call, but I’d probably grab some new oil that I know what it is, get though today’s project, and then call the shop on monday. If happy with the explanation, use it in the rear end. That would be the rear diff, just to clarify. :D

I have never ran into this problem either. I always just buy it off the shelf.

haha! Thanks for the clarification, I would have totally guessed wrong...

Well, I run The Truck pretty damn hard in all different environments. So I'm probably going to end up getting some mobile 1. Even if this oil is legit, it's probably just a cheap oil. My local independent toyota mechanic uses all valvoline synthetic in his shop so I just assumed this guy would have quality fluids, but I guess not.

Take the bulk oil back and get your 67.00 back in your pocket.

Yeah bud. The auto stores prices across the board for fluids are really dropping lately. I’ve been stocking up on stuff as it goes on sale. I just discovered the ‘click and save’ option on these auto stores websites. Small print. Better to have some piece of mind with the Mobil1. You can always use the other stuff later once/after you talk with the bulk guys shop.

haha! Well sht. One of my buddies says he's bought bulk gear oil in 140w from the same shop and it was red. He said he thinks the brand was schaeffer

So I google schaeffer gear oil and all I can come up with are pictures of a black bottle and one obscure video...

    https://youtu.be/VkfEehTSesk

    but it looks green sooo...

I'll put the mobile1 in my front diff and tcase and get this job done. I think my rear is due so I'll just put the black stuff in the rear if I can verify its schaeffer or something else thats legit

At this point, I would just mix it with some whiskey and down it. :D
