I was just wondering if the gas mileage is about the same with all trucks, or is the tundra that bad?

    Welcome from SoCal!

Short answer, they're all the same when compared to similar sized engines. For a more detailed answer, I recommend using the search function to find the many threads on this topic, some of which include a lot of scientific data.

Just curious because everyone I know is die hard Chevy, and say how just about every other truck gets way better gas mileage. This is my first truck and iam happy with it. Its not my work truck, nor do I tow anything I just like it plain and simple, and had good luck with Toyota cars n SUVs in the past

the claims that other trucks get better gas mileage is not very accurate. Sure they advertise 18 mpg in the city with turbos and what not, but they can advertise that number driving anyway they want, doesnt necessarily mean its how the public will drive. Is it realistic to to say you can get 18mpg city by keeping the RPM's under 2000? I think not. If you tried doing that in Cali traffic, you would get shot or rear ended.
People i know with big 3 trucks and all the fancy engines and do dads like cylinder deactivation, barely get 15 or 16 city. I get 14 city in the tundra, 13 if I have the AC blasting. Is 2 or 3 mpg really that much better when you consider the longevity and reliability of the toyota V8, plus getting v8 power and sound? The cylinder deactivation or auto start stop nonsense will likely negate any mpg savings in the future when you need engine work.

Yah man, but you're right there off the 91 - so I'd assume you drive it frequently. The 91 is a vacuum of gas mileage.

Your gonna pay at the pump with the current Tundra. Chevy, Ford and others your gonna pay with repairs and your time without a truck. Pick your poison.

Yup, literally drive it everyday. Its not that bad for me because i start work really early and take the 241 so there is not much congestion, the way back home has a little bit of traffic in the early afternoon but its not as bad as others have it. Even in that few mile crawl, i still manage to get 15-16 without the AC. If it was all 91 then ya you are definitely correct.

15.3MPG 50/50 city/highway 34 inch tires and 3 inch lift..isn’t bad. But I don’t really care much because it never spends time with the mechanic.

It's all about timing. I live in Redlands, and my office is in Costa Mesa - Thankfully I only have to go to my office once a month or so, but on those days I time it out to leave my house around 10, spend about 15 minutes at the office, and get back to avoid traffic both ways.

nice, you are lucky. 10am is a good time. You really have a very narrow window with the 91. 10am to about 1pm most days except friday you should be ok. That really isnt much time lol.

Yah, I have to commute to other places daily - but thankfully, pretty much all of them avoid the 91.

Ram TRX vs Tundra mileage test while towing. Spoiler alert: 10 MPG for the Ram, 11 for the Tundra.

Not picking on you...but everyone that I know that owns a 1/2 ton (Chevy 1500/Ram 1500/Ford F150) doesn’t really get that much better gas mileage than I do. 19 at best vs my 17.5 Tundra. The Ram owner I know can’t get better than 16. Their all fairly equivalent however Tundra being the worst but again not a night and day difference as most reviewers would have you believe.

Here is my take. Everyone claims their truck gets good gas mileage (excluding tundra owners). What they typically look at is highway mileage. I just had this conversation with two guys on Saturday. One had a Ford Ecoboost and the other had a Chevy Silverado. They both were claiming 18-19mpg. So I had them turn their trucks on....for the life of their trucks, both over 50K miles, the averages were 16.6 for the Ford and 16.2 for Chevy. My GMC 3500 gasser in total average gets 14.3. Both my Tundras got 14.9mpg to 15.1mpg. Depending on summer vs winter gas. Is 16.4 (avg.) for the Ford/Chevy significantly better than 15mpg (avg) of my Tundras? I am going to say no.

And I should point out that my tundra was loaded everyday of its life. So my numbers would have been closer to 15.5-16.

If you are happy with the truck, tell your die hard "Bowtie till I die" fanboys to buy a real American truck (I used to be a die hard Chevy guy).

About 10 years ago I bought an Equinox. The sticker said 22/32 mpg. I previously had an Accord that was rated at 26/32 mpg. With that Accord I averaged just over 31 mpg for every gallon I pumped into to, consistent with the sticker. Most of the driving was highway. Now driving that Equinox...same commute, same driver, same gas..I never touched 24 mpg on any fill-up, not much above the city rating. My gut tells me Toyota's numbers are like Honda's numbers...real world accurate. Others...coasting downwind downhill in neutral accurate.

I have to say in a sick way I find all this talk about MPG, gas prices, etc to have an entertainment value. Just returned from Costco. No gas shortages here but you would think so by their gas lines. And it has been this way since gas poked above $2 per gallon a few months back. The effort, time and resources people put into filling their vehicle is just comical at times. Some of those people are 8 cars deep...yet down the street they could fill up with for about 0.20 per gallon more. And my guess is most are just "topping off" from about 1/2 tank in advance of the next price increase so they might be saving $2 for that 30 minute wait. SMH....

As for me, pretty much the same driving habits with my Tundra, but since I retired I would guess the hwy/city is 60/40 vs 80/20. Just over 17 mpg for every gallon pumped on my first 2021 Tundra. Cannot be unhappy if it is consistent with the sticker. My guess is my new Tundra will do a tad better..if I keep my foot off the pedal and finger off the Tow button (TRD Sport is just more fun to drive vs the TSS..I seem to be more aggressive with it). I have not filled it up yet.

Yep, buddy of mine owns a 2008 or 2009 Silverado and tells me how he gets 18MPG. After some questioning I found out that he drives the speed limit religiously on flat roads to and from work.

Yeah, if I drive 55MPH on the nose, I'll get pretty damn close to 18MPG as well. (That was also WITH AFM on. He told me that once he disabled AFM, he lost like 2MPG.)

its the same here in cali, i never understood the costco gas thing. Ya its a little cheaper, but most cars have less than a 15 gallon tank, figure you fill up at around 13 gallons. thats less than 5 bucks savings for 30 minutes of your time. Thats sad.

I have gotten 18.5 (hand calculations) of course doing the speed limit and keeping the truck below 2k...it gets a little bit tedious. I am happy drive at 70 getting 17.5 all highway of course.

Mileage is the same for each driver, usually. Drive like a race car driver and you'll get shit MPG in any truck. Drive like granny going to church and you'll do better on MPG.

People make a big deal of 3 MPG. Do the math on a 15 mpg vs 18 mpg vehicle running 15K miles at $3 per gallon. It's not that big a deal.

You know what was weird...and flies in the face of the granny comment is my recent limited experience. When I decided to trade in my 21 TSS for a 21 TRD Sport, we could not complete the deal that day...the TRD just came in on a truck, I did not have my title, and my wife was working (needed her signature). So we put the deal together for finalization the next evening, and I left the dealership in my TSS with about 1/2 tank of gas. I knew i was only going to put about 60 miles before I traded it the next night, so I started to drive it like I stole it. Tow/Haul button engaged, lead shoe laced up, and 75mph in the left lane! On highway trips of 19, 18 and 9 miles, the "Avg MPG for that Trip" that displays when you turn off the vehicle was pretty good...one above 16 and two above 17. I was amazed quite frankly. Now I know this is different from a pencil calculation, but i was expecting those numbers to be in 12's or worse the way I was driving it. Man that was fun! Told my Tundra owning neighbor this story and he said there is evidence that accelerating up to speed quickly on longer highway drives results in better MPG that feathering the throttle up to speed. He might be right.

By "granny" I meant not going over 65/driving 5 under the speed limit and such. Taking 2 miles to get up to speed will absolutely ruin your mpg.

I should have been more clear.
