Great reminder to completely disregard fanboys who claim posting about legitimate issues is unnecessary or moot. OP was getting criticized for posting on multiple outlets... Pathetic

So I called the dealership again about the interim fix for the fuel leak after being told yesterday it was unavailable. Again today I was told it was unavailable. I asked to have an advisor call me back.

Shows 3 recalls. two are for the fuel leak and one is for the parking brake reprogramming. Notification in the mail was a while back just informing me of the fuel leak recall. Nothing paper wise since. I have a feeling the advisor might no more.

Unbelievable they wouldn’t just spray under there with a pressure washer for a minute before starting. I’d share that with their Manager and then go to the next dealer down the road. Horrible customer service.

I doubt Toyota Corporate America is concerned about the internet comment section on Reddit

When I pressed him: "why all of a sudden is it a rush for me to bring it in, did you see the photo and video on Redditt?" His response was like yeahhh we saw it. So not saying Toyota Corporate follows reddit every waking moment about their vehicles, but they also don't want fires to happen after its been put on blast.

The timing and extreme urgency he was putting on me to have my truck in for repair is quite the coincidence

It sure does not sound like you read everything. He took it to the dealership in November and they told him he would be fine without the temp fix and then he posted he visited the dealership twice about the problem. He has a valid complaint when he tried to get it taken care of and they told him not to worry about it.

That could have been one of the largest lawsuits to Toyota ever if the OP lost his wife and kid to be. I would be having a conversation with the SOB that told me not to worry about it

You know what? I got very triggered by your accusation for some reason. I had a lengthy rebuttal written that made my blood boil. However, I cooled off.

I see that you're a 2nd gen owner, which means you haven't been included in the Toyota communications on this issue. I've received 4 communications directly from Toyota about this issue (2 letters and 2 app notifications). Even my original $hitty dealership (I don't go to them any longer) has sent me 2 letters about this.

I understand the seriousness of this issue which is why I had the interim fix done last week before a road trip. I've never downplayed the seriousness of this issue.

All I have asked is what do you expect Toyota to do that they haven't already done? This guy's dealership is $hitty for downplaying the issue. Period. Toyota has been very communicative & clear on this issue. At least, in my opinion. I think I received fewer notifications about the Takata airbag recall than I did about this.

My dealership called me today to say the parts for the recall job are in. A gas leak like that is a major fire hazard.

Go to another dealer if one gives a problem.

    UPDATE:

I figured I would keep this going for anyone following. Not interested in the banter, want those who are concerned to have the resources to at least try to check their trucks at home if your dealership can't get you in.

Went into the dealership today and they had a few other trucks in getting the temp fix done. Techs said they had only got the parts in for the temp fix last week and were just starting to push them out this week. My gas line had rubbed the break line all the way through and had begun to rub 1/2 to 1/4 way through at another spot (red arrows). The other posts I have seen so far are wrong about the location of where the rub is happening, it is not where you see the two lines cross above the tank, but rather it is against the break lines that are attached to the frame (picture attached). Each spot that was marked on the template for corrugated plastic was rubbing on my line. I would assume that the location on the top middle of the tank that was wearing will effect everyone's truck at some point.

They fired up the truck and drove it into the shop there (apparent communication breakdown) and the tech's first words to me were "I hope you didn't drive that thing down here, it was spraying fuel all over the shop. Those lines are at 40-60PSI"

Let's keep it civil and make sure everyone is safe.

Is that you in the shop taking photos of the tank and such or did a tech do that for you??? (just curious)

But, either way, it looks like at this point (at least) the shop is being transparent w/you and not trying to make excuses or 'hide' anything; which is good. I'm glad you're getting taken care of now. Sucks that you ended up in this position, but fortunately you had the whereabouts to watch for issues and dig a bit deeper when something more presented itself.

Hopefully your posts will help folks understand a bit better what is actually going on here. This kind of information gives consumers a better perspective

Correct. In between the white marks is where the break line rubbed through the plastic fuel line

Yep, they had it all laid out for me to look at which was very transparent. I am going to go back in before it is installed as well to see what the fix looks like before the tank is bolted back on. I'm not sure I am interested in the "zip tie fix" for a fuel line at this point after seeing all the wear that line has taken, but we will see.

And yes more information the better for everyone to make their decisions

I emailed my dealer service department on Jan 2nd requesting the recall service. They set me up with a Jan 3rd appointment plus a loaner for the day. All set with a temporary shield for now.

Kudos to the OP for providing the most visual content I've seen on the issue, so far. It appears there are multiple locations where a potential leak can occur.

My truck was built in 6/23 and is not included in this recall. Out of curiosity, I crawled under it and took pics. I noticed my truck has the corrugated tube where the 2 lines cross, but I wasn't able to see the the other potential leak areas. This still makes me wonder if the trucks that aren't included in this recall actually have a permanent fix, or only the temporary fix.

My cynical theory is my truck came from the factory with the temporary fix, hence it was not included in the first temporary fix recall. I fully expect to get a recall notice for the permanent fix when it is available. I hope I'm wrong.

While they have it down, have them look for loose bolts, like this one in your post

Found a photo that shows where the two lines were contacting. It is actually on the side between the frame and the fuel tank. Interestingly on the template for the temp fix, the corrugated plastic looks to be installed further up the line where the fuel line crossed under the other plastic line and not where mine rubbed.

The fuel line is back-ordered and they're hoping to get the temp "fix" done within a month if they can get the part...

    Lots of stuff!
I am curious about the condition of the brake line? Not as weak as the plastic line but add some abrasive material and it can sand away the thin steel as well?

Sorry, but the rabbit hole was calling!

Damnit, now I'm gonna have to crawl under my truck and take more pics. I don't have pics of that location.

BillyGoat, would it be possible for you to take pics of the same locations post repairs?

Hey OP, could you show us a pic of exactly where you are sticking your phone in for these shots (or are you using a flexible inspection camera?) I have tried and tried with my phone and can’t get these shots you are taking. Thanks for the help.

lol had same issue with service reps telling me to wait for the actual repair and that this wasn’t a real threat. Glad you posted this OP. Asked for 3rd time just a few days ago at a bigger dealership in Prosper TX, same answer and that they just gotten parts for the temp fix. Will def be making an appt.

I would love to but it lives at the dealership for now. I went right in front of the rear wheel on the passenger side. Shove the phone camera all the way up flat to the underside of the bed and point it at maybe a 10% angle inwards towards the driver's side. You will see a large black corrugated bundle of wires you want to get the camera up and over that. If you have small wrists you could go between the drive shaft and the tank where the heat shield is.

The picture below is from the drive shaft side looking back at where you want to get the camera flat up against the bed. You can see the black corrugated bundle you need to get above. wide-angle helps for all of this. You would need to angle the camera back towards the passenger side to be able to see where mine rubbed the break lines. The whole time I was taking photos I though they were rubbing where the two lines crossed on top of the tank.

EDIT: My truck is the double cab long bed so the tank location may vary for a crewmax.

Interesting to see a case where the rubbing and leak actually happened. I had been on the fence about getting the interim repair and I guess in a way I still am. While it is clear that this leak is possible, I have 10,000 miles less rubbing than the OP and no bumpy off roading so hopefully mine is only worn halfway through. ;-)
