The 2002 is under the drivers seat located on the under chassis frame. Try there and report back.

Yeah trace the lines from the fuel tank up to the engine compartment so I'm assuming there must just be the screen in the fuel tank. If so I'm obviously not going to mess with that. I figure I'll just buy a good quality fuel system cleaner and probably run that in this tank and in the next tank and that should be good enough to get some of the carbon and crap out of there.

Don't do it. Take it to a shop. That thing is a pain and I hate it.

Most fuel filters on toyotas are in the tank and considered a permanent filter with no maintenance required. Not sure on your tundra because I haven’t worked for toyota in a while so double check with the dealer.

The 02’ has a little external filter as I described. It also has a ‘sock’ type filter on the pump inside the fuel tank. Double protection, if you will.

I asked dealer tech about filter the other day and sent him a pic of what I thought was the filter located under driver door. The quote is response....
My plan when I get back in town is to look into this further by getting better view of part # seen in pic above. I have seen a few utubes of that same object being replaced as a fuel filter.

His response is 100% wrong, it's a fuel filter. The vapor canister on your 04 is located on the passenger side of the fuel tank and looks nothing like that

Scary isn’t it? Stealership Guy had the picture with part # and everything!

I am finding more and more unqualified people working where they shouldn’t. DIY is becoming a necessity these days due to others laziness.

Edit: Bubbas copied text from stealer response reeks of modern day English Class participation trophy winning.

I don’t know why everyone is so scared to change this filter. Yeah, some fuel gets on you but no more than when you change your own oil.

Call the dealership back and give them that part number and see what they tell you it is lol. It’s right where everyone says it is and is really easy to change.

It's super easy assuming everything comes apart. Mine started to twist the whole line trying to remove the fitting.

The pic is the fuel filter. They were still being used on 2004 models. Not sure how far forward in years it went. My 04 Sequoia had it where your pic is.

The guy at the dealer parts counter are not mechanics, they usually don’t know anything about auto repair. They just know how to use a computer and look up part numbers, prices, and stuff like that. I have been to the dealer and have asked them question which they have no idea about. Either ask a mechanic or the parts guy at auto parts store, they know more

They switched to plastic fuel tanks in 05 (on the Tundra at least) and dropped the external filter. My understanding is the external filter is necessary to deal with the possible rust from metal tanks to prevent it from plugging injectors.

Just pickup a new one at Napa for $8. I just replaced mine a couple of weeks ago using this video as a reference. It's easy to do without the video but it does save time knowing exactly where to go and what size of wrenches to bring.

I just looked under my 2006 DC 2wd . . . plastic tank, and no fuel filter between it and the engine compartment. Nothing on the frame rail. Weird.

06 has no external filter. Just the sock in the tank.

And apparently not even that. When I Google the part number in the photo I get several Toyota dealer listings for a Tundra fuel filter.
